I was hired to teach and play at Augusta (Elkins, WV) Old time week somewhere around 2002, as was Art Stamper. I was there with a bunch o' fellers from St. Louis....the ILL-MO Boys, including Jim Nelson, Geoff Seitz and Curtis Buckhannon. Art pulled out "John Riley" on the "porch" (that wonderful porch) within hours of our arrival there. He said his daddy (Hiram) only ever played the first part and it was only on the banjo. Art said he made up the second part somewhere along the way. I have always been extremely fond of this tune and have used it at many a contradance over the years. Also.......met you guys at Geoff Seitz' house years ago....like maybe around 2014???

Thanks for this nice tune which i have recently been trying to put together on fiddle and on banjo. Great to get a bit of instruction on the tune broken down by you.

Carl, I am trying to play the same chords as you, but there are a couple places where what I hear you play is not the same as what I hear when I do the fingering that I see you play. Would you be willing to publish the unique fingerings you use? (and any non-std tuning, if applicable). I can probably figure out where they go. I hear an A chord periodically that I am not sure if it is a major or minor chord, or neither.

I am curious myself. For my ear, I don't think an Am chord sounds as good as the A major. Leaving out the 3rd completely sounds OK, too (play a normal A chord, only strum strings 6 - 3), just have to pay more attention to the strings you strum. On one A chord, Carl stretches his pinky up to the 5th fret, and looks like he may be fretting the E string, so chord would be 002225, or he may be fretting the 5th fret on both the E and B strings (002255) which would leave out the 3rd, but would be trickier to play. Maybe he will respond, but I am not optimistic as this post is 6 years old.
