That's a great idea regarding the circular tables. I imagine chatting with like minded individuals will be as important as actually using the machines. Especially immediately after lockdown is lifted.
Great update Neil. What I like about your channel is that we can see where all that patron support is going. You are always planning and preparing and improving. But most importantly you're sharing everything you have with us and giving back to the retro community. Thanks
@@RMCRetro I'm sure we can let you off a few cat treats! Been following you for a few years but only just became a patron (my first!). Went for the cheap option as I'm currently funding an Amiga 500++ build that's nearly finished. Can't imagine who I have to blame for that!? haha

I think I'm going to have to make the trip over from the USA to visit!!! This is looking amazing and your hard work will be appreciated by so many retro gamers.
You know what would look fantastic in the reception area? A big old wall or roof mounted CRT TV running Teletext to display pages of information about the cave and the exhibits. You could let people play around with the pages via the TVs remote control. It would be a period piece of retro in its own right. Easy to do with a hidden PI nowadays! You could even have one large display, with smaller portable TVs dotted around to be used like information kiosks in modern exhibits. Maybe even a teletext adapter for the BBC. I haven't used one of them since I was in my teens.
Old Amiga 500 owner from Australia here. Well, actually my dad bought it for work in ‘87, so I wasn’t technically the owner. But, us kids soon worked out that it had far better uses! As an aside, ‘Bert Jilk’ is a name I invented for myself when playing Amiga games. Anyway, I’ve really enjoyed watching your videos. I have no idea about the technical stuff, but it’s still great to watch. It’s occurred to me that, in order to spread the nostalgia of the old games around the cave, it might be nice to be able to repeat the (rather small) monitors on to larger screens positioned around the cave. I know that, for me, just seeing classic old games in action gives me lots of memories. Maybe modern flat-screens would spoil the retro vibe, but I’d be happy to sit with a beer and watch that, rather than trying to peer over someone’s shoulder. It might also be a great conversation starter... Oz in Thailand (aka Bert Jilk).
So thrilled that there is a box of Thief on the display - and then that column is hidden by that cover in the middle. Somewhat reflects the overall perception of the game. Brilliant but often overlooked 😄
As this video ended, I was thinking back to the looming crisis you revealed to us, when your previous landlord so unceremoniously kicked you out. That was probably the best thing he could have done for you! With every crisis comes opportunity. Look how far you've come since then. 😀 All of this would not be happening right now, if you hadn't been forced to reinvent yourself back then. I'd like to thank your previous landlord for "encouraging" you, and providing you with the motivation and the opportunity to do bigger and better things! 😉
You should put UV filters on the windows that shine down on the shelves. All those beautiful original boxes of handheld games will have their colors leeched if the sun is shining on them. I wish I lived in the UK. I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to visit your finished space. I was buying retro games when they were new. I love that people like you are exposing new generations to them.
With the hanging cables, you can attach a plug at the top, if the weight is too heavy, it would automatically pull itself out. In addition, the bistro tables could be removed if necessary and the cables could be removed.
You have done a phenomenal job setting up the cave. It's been a real joy watching over the past few months as you've gone from showing us an empty area to what it is now. It's a shame I live in Australia as getting over there to see it is something I'll doubt be able to do for a long time but at least I can watch your videos and enjoy it to some extent. Here's to hoping you're able to open up from September and many ppl are able to experience it from then. Keep up the great work Neil.
I'm so impressed by the vision, DIY skills and sourcing products, parts and solutions to do all this. Well done Neil! The reception desk reminds me of the glass counter at my local independent computer shop in the 90s, where they would keep the expensive and exotic Amiga parts. Really nice start to the video too. I'm also loving the apron look that you're rocking more and more these days, I'm a bike mechanic and an apron is my favourite piece of clothing. Keep up the amazing work!
This whole series has been a literal nostalgia ASMR hit for me! Serious gooseflesh watching the reception desk and tabletop displays coming together! I wish you and yours nothing but the best as the final assembly comes together! Bless you for preserving important electronic and computing history for us!

Just wait for phase II, a huge underground facility beneath the Mill, he will need tunnel boring machines, underground heating, mono rail transportation system, self contained cold fusion power station and life support systems, all connected to an Acorn Electron expansion slot.
This is looking fantastic! It's nice to see a few of my all time fave games bunched together in the reception display, too. Syndicate, Flashback, Frontier, Tomb Raider, SWOS, lovely stuff!
The cave is one of the best projects I've seen so far. Starting with the scenery and building, and of cource, moving on to the cave itself. so much love and passion.
Just a thought, building on the smart plug idea, you could use a logitech harmony elite hub and some IR blasters and use the remote to control it all - including switching inputs on the monitors.
11:30 - A change of mind - Great big thumbs up from me: some ambient table space, and some chill space for the visitors sounds like an excellent idea. The number of times I've visited some great, big, prestigious exhibition and thought "There's nowhere for me to sit, nowhere for me to put my phone down while I change keys from one pocket to another, nowhere for me to put my coat, etc." it seems to be something people just never think about. Rant over :-)
Get one of these 'IR Smart Remote Control Smart Home Automation' from amazon you can add the remote for the Sony monitors so it will change the input to scart automatically as part of your "cave on"
Excellent job its looking great. Just a thought with your cable drum table as you don't want a mains cable drop to it. Maybe insert a small car battery in the drum centre behind a removable panel and have some 5 volt recharging station outlets on the top for people mobiles or small gaming systems. You could just run a recharger on it overnight when there is no one there to trip over the cable.
It’s all coming together. It’s nice to see the studio as you walk in. The one concern I had was security. Games, handhelds and even small computer peripherals.
Shouldn't be too hard to embed alarm tags in most devices (also they are very cheap to source), making it impossible for them to removed without drawing massive attention to yourself, and of course alarm tag detectors at the doors, can be discreet or in the open, the latter being a visual deterrent for any idiots with ill intentions. Also smart water is another good Idea, all the computers can be locked down using Kensington locks or whatever, 24/7 security cams, honestly shouldn't be to difficult a task keeping everything where it's supposed to be.
Metal detectors and CCTV, perhaps - as a lot of the peripherals have metal parts. Plus handing over your coat, hat, bag(s), mobile phone(s) etc; then collecting them on the way out. This help to might stop any lighter fingers, so to speak? Oh and sign-in/sign-out with ID! (Perhaps the detectors could be like they have in airports (the paddle sort?). Or even a form of 'secret' weighing - so any major deviation in weight could be identified? Maybe over the top but it would work, possibly?
I could really live and work in a place in the intro. I used to walk to work during a nature park and used to get stalked by foxes and young foxes who'd make some right deathly screeching noises late at night! 3:55 - You can buy UV acrylic but not sure if the price is different. With all the new options for fast loading games, I reckon there should always be a computer with a cassette recorder to show the younger generations how long we waited for a game to load 😂
There might be a way to remove the need for the TV remote. Google "service menu" plus whatever model they are. There will be a hidden menu accessible by pressing a certain combination of buttons on the remote. Inside this menu there might be an option for "startup input" or "lock input to SCART". Also there might be an option to disable the front panel buttons which could be useful in your situation (to prevent visitors messing with the settings). Be very careful when you're poking around in the service menu though because there are sometimes options that can brick the TV.
you should organize the tabletop gaming shelves in some sort of order, like chronologically for instance - also be nice to have a placard or something outlining a brief backstory of each item.
Agreed, I'm just figuring out how best to display info without it becoming a cluttered mess. Historic info and notes on how to use the systems are needed really
Neil, amazing work, a dream come true and definitely a place like no other. Your videos became the most entertaining and nostalgic to watch for a retro-computing enthusiast like me. Please mark your place on Google Maps. If I ever visit the UK again it would be to visit this remarkable place and meet you in person; trust me, I have no business visiting the UK. I commend you on everything and I truly wish you all the best.
One thing with regards the TV remote to change over to SCART. You can build a Raspberry Pi Pico IR Blaster HAT that'll automatically send out the correct IR code. You can then have it send out as soon as it's powered on by a smart plug :)
Great!!!, you are "The Masterchef of retromachines". Thanks a lot to make these memories alive, (the modern tech today is only focused on market and so not too funny)
You should also mix in a white noise machine so the sound effects and conversations aren't bouncing everywhere when this place is full. You set it to a level that you can't hear, but can "feel". This is a trick used in large offices and museums that most people don't know about.
20:36. SCART connector at pin 8 has a function switching feature. When you pull it up to 12V those Sony TVs should automatically jump to Scart AV input.
It's great seeing this place take shape Neil. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside seeing people donate things to the cave or even better their time to help you make this a great success!
Fantastic video - Cave is looking wonderful. I do have a minor complaint, however, seeing as you covered up the greatest PC game of all time (Thief) with the central plank between those 2 Plexiglass sheets... Sacrilege!
May I say, the location for the Cave is absolutely gorgeous! Some day maybe I will make it to the UK and see it, but I'm loving what I see in these videos.
I hope one day I can visit your space and check out some vintage computers! Even though it was before my time this stuff fascinates me, love your work and keep growing!
Looking absolutely amazing. I love the reception with all the game boxes. Such a cool 'welcome'. Oh and the arcade cabinet - sooooooo cool (I remember spending hours at the local ice cream shop playing Ms. Pac-Man at a sit down cabinet).
This is honestly becoming a dream of mine to be able to visit there (living in my country, specially these days, makes it difficult money-wise), I hope I'll be able to do it in the near future!
@RMC - Dunno if you knew this but you can apply to the Council for a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) to serve alcohol at your bar up to 50 times a year and you don't need a premises licence. You will need a Personal Licence though but they're easy enough to get.
Something you might like to consider. Much as I may wish to trust the visitors to this space, and don't want to think badly of them, there is always the possibility of exhibits "wandering off". You might want to put RFID shop tags in the more irreplaceable items and a detector at the entrance, just in case a priceless copy of Bomb Jack accidentally falls into someone's bag.
what about a pool table light over the bar area? Also, what about retractable ceiling-mounted extension cords for the interior tables? If someone were to tug on them, more would simply pull out of the reel. And when you don't need them, just retract them back up. They even make ones that have 2-3 outlets at the end of the cord, not just a single one, so it should be plenty for a computer/monitor/an extra peripheral.
Wow, THAT is an absolut amazing retro "cave"! I love the idea of easily turning everything on and off via smartphone and remote control. Maybe you should do something with the wooden "plank" (sorry I'm german ^^) at the reception desk. A lot of big round holes in regular (or even irregular) order, to see a glimpse of the game boxes behind it! 😃
idea for things to sit on... if you get cable-drums like the one you have taken apart and made tables off and glue floor carpet to one of the sides. is a well know thing here in Norway at example youth-clubs or at the cabins belonging to a scout organization using big ones as tables and smaller ones as chairs, covering the "butt-side" with leftover carpet picked up for free at some local flooring company. you could stain em to match the rest and even find carpet to match the floor or a theme you think of... just get a thick carpet, or it will maybe be a bit much sore butts around, speaking from experience.
Looks really amazing. So many great ideas you have put into play perfectly . I'm glad security is being considered as I've been unnecessarily thinking about the same thing since the outset of the new cave as I knew it would an issue to tackle. All in all well done and great job so far. Can't wait to visit some day.
Coming on brilliantly, this is so fantastic! I really hope to visit one day but just knowing that this place exists and that I had the *tiniest* part in helping to make it a reality gives me a warm fuzziness deep in my feels :p
For the TVs, you could probably attach a micro controller to the smart plugs and have little IR extenders go to every TV and have the micro controller send out the pulse codes needed to switch to scart. So then you don't have to do anything besides press one button to turn everything on.
Very nice. I think direct sunlight from the widows/skylights could cause rapid fading of things like the game boxes shown in sunlight at 14:48 and LCD washout of the cocktail game system. Some kind of diffusing cover could be used on the windows/skylights? I wish all of the computer stuff in the UK I've seen on TH-cam existed while I was stationed in Suffolk.
Could it be good to put two tables, one in front to the other, and the red top poer cable in the middle, so that nobody could stay too close to the power cable? That way you can have tables far from walls and powered. Cheers, M
There's a simple mod you can make to the tellies to make them go onto the SCART input automatically. You just need to apply the correct voltage on pin 8. I did it by finding a 12v on the tuner and soldering a wire from there to the pin 8 connection on the circuit board - nothing is visible from outside.
Everything looks great! I'm all the way over in the US but I'd definitely love to make time to see this space in person when you start doing tours. As for theft, it might be worth installing a video surveillance system, which could serve two purposes. The first would be identifying who stole something and the second would be simply having a video feed that you could use to capture overhead footage of visitors to put into future episodes of the show. Cheers!
That looks great! I have a very similar cocktail cabinet which I fitted a Game Elf to. AliExpress sell compatible trackballs that hook directly into the Elf for Arkanoid and Centipede etc.
An Arduino and a couple IR LEDs could well replace the remote control, making this a true one button solution. WRT LED lighting, look for lights with diffusion in front of the LEDs, those won't show individual LEDs. Maybe talk to the people at ETC (etcconnect.com, not affiliated) for their range of theatrical and architectural professional lights.
and next the "Crusaders of the Dark Savant" will finally arrive from the other London at the forks of the Thames and you'll be homer simpson DOH as you open it up to make Crusaders fit

A compromise on the power cables over the tables - make them retractable, out of the way when not needed.
looking cool hoping you do an opening day live stream
Neil, you could maybe have someone whip you up a custom arduino TV blaster to make the scart input switch automatic

If you did want the centre tables, curly cords might be the answer. No climbing the pole and it would be stretchy if pulled or the table tips over...
If you don’t like the dots on LED strips check COB strips (Chip On Board).
Nice tip thank you very much
Wow, THAT is an absolut amazing retro "cave"!
Retro Man Chef cooking up something special, cave on.
So glad you know to appreciate that beautiful location
This channel is beautifully nerdy I love it.
Thanking you!
Well, there's your catch phrase sorted: "Home of luxury trousers." 😁
PS - This is all just beautiful, Neil. Absolutely spectacular.
I love your retro museum cave plan. I hope i get the money once to go there and see the retro tech in life
Looks like retro heaven.
I tried to make something with a perspex sheet, of course it cracked as soon as i drilled it. Well done for not ruining yours!
The key seems to be to have it flush with something, even better if you clamp it between two bits of wood and then drill it
This is just incredibly impressive.
Thanks Peter
idea for things to sit on...
if you get cable-drums like the one you have taken apart and made tables off and glue floor carpet to one of the sides.
is a well know thing here in Norway at example youth-clubs or at the cabins belonging to a scout organization using big ones as tables and smaller ones as chairs, covering the "butt-side" with leftover carpet picked up for free at some local flooring company.
you could stain em to match the rest and even find carpet to match the floor or a theme you think of...
just get a thick carpet, or it will maybe be a bit much sore butts around, speaking from experience.
Looks really amazing. So many great ideas you have put into play perfectly . I'm glad security is being considered as I've been unnecessarily thinking about the same thing since the outset of the new cave as I knew it would an issue to tackle. All in all well done and great job so far. Can't wait to visit some day.
Looks smashing mate! If you don't have humidity control you may wanna consider a few large buckets of damprid tucked away
So wonderful to see the progress of this project. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to seeing more!
Everything you do is my speed. Love it.
It's really becoming a fantastic looking space, looking forward to seeing more.
Thank you Rob
More progress, more excitement! I'll try to come down and see you later this year and make up excuses for why I'm so bad at Galaxian.
Coming on brilliantly, this is so fantastic! I really hope to visit one day but just knowing that this place exists and that I had the *tiniest* part in helping to make it a reality gives me a warm fuzziness deep in my feels :p
16:55 - Clint's ears prick up.
For the TVs, you could probably attach a micro controller to the smart plugs and have little IR extenders go to every TV and have the micro controller send out the pulse codes needed to switch to scart. So then you don't have to do anything besides press one button to turn everything on.
Haha, my ambilights on my Philips TV turned blue when you lit up handheld corner!
What a beautiful place 👍👍
Lol I've been watching your channel for ages, and just worked out where you are, will definitely pop in when you're up and running
6:35 That is a 14N5E if I'm not mistaken. You can mod that PVM to RGB fairly easily! Free PVM, new cool video :D
Really pleased for you. Great progress
Ahhh you have a colleco Alian attack handheld in the pigeon holes, that takes me back to the 80s , would love to play that again 😀
It`s more like "THE LOFT" not "The Cave" AWESOME !!!
Looking amazing so far
That's handy to know, I'll crack the lid open for a look inside
@@RMCRetro There's a small connector especially for trackballs or spinners, I think the instruction booklet points it out.
An Arduino and a couple IR LEDs could well replace the remote control, making this a true one button solution.
WRT LED lighting, look for lights with diffusion in front of the LEDs, those won't show individual LEDs. Maybe talk to the people at ETC (etcconnect.com, not affiliated) for their range of theatrical and architectural professional lights.
and next the "Crusaders of the Dark Savant" will finally arrive from the other London at the forks of the Thames and you'll be homer simpson DOH as you open it up to make
Crusaders fit
