Phew! That was hard work but I'm really pleased with the result. If you'd like to support The Cave head to patreon.com/rmcretro - If you'd like to visit The Cave and see this for yourself head to retrocollective.co.uk Thank you for taking the time to watch! Neil
Neil, seriously, do you review those Home & Garden type magazines for inspiration? Your sense of style and balance for renovation is fantastic. If only i had some of that sense for my wasted $100K renovation. Whoops.
Nice job fitting out that new lab area. One thing I would advise is that for future 'trash to treasure' style episodes it would be good to set up an overhead camera above the bench. Fortunately you have a nice handy beam that seems to be situated directly above the workbench.
"Neil, I've been a loyal follower of your TH-cam channel for years, and it's been incredible to witness your journey from creating content from your home to your current location in an old mill. Your dedication to computer retro and laboratory space is truly commendable, and your content is consistently excellent. I'm so impressed with how far you've come, and I absolutely love your work. Thank you for sharing your passion with us all, Neil. Here's to many more exciting adventures in your new space!"
That's such a brilliant idea to have a live retro coding space. It's certainly something that no other retro museum has (as far as I'm aware) and for folks like me interested in programming, it provides a chance to learn some valuable tips and tricks right from a seasoned developer.
So many creators talk about wanting to do something like this, build a museum/exhibition space but you actually put the work in and made it happen. Well done.
Quite incredible to see how far you have come Neil. Yes it's a group effort but none of this could have happened without the incredible amount of hard work that you have put into this, as well as your obvious love for retro and your natural talents as a broadcaster. The catalyst for all that has happened via this channel is the fact that you are so enjoyable to watch and evidently such a likeable chap. This success couldn't have happened to a nicer person. I hope we all get to visit and thank you in person some day!
It's so cool to see how much the Cave has developed. Had forgotten you started in the basement! Love watching the evolution of such an awesome nostalgic space! I'm only 30mins down the road so one day i'll get around to visiting!!!
Can I just say, Neil, you could have just sat back and admired the Cave as it was (and deservedly so!) but you decided to make it even better and I completely admire you for that. The Cave looks amazing and I truly hope to visit with the family one day and shake your hand for making your dream a reality. Keep up the awesome work!
I say it every time you have a cave version update Neil, it may be because of our clicks, views, support and donations but it's in no small part because of your drive and determination that the RMC channel and museum exists. Thank you for many, many years of exploration, knowledge sharing and just general good times brought about by your hard work. I hope to visit the cave some day in the future. Thanks for making a space filled with the things so many of us love ;)
Yeah me too just need to find out if it has disabled access. Don't want to travel 300 miles to find out. I carnt get in the place. I've tried emailing but not reply. Does anyone know if they have a lift or a stannah stair lift ect....
This is fantastic Neil!!!! I had the pleasure of visiting the cave last year and Neil gave us a sneak peek behind the curtain and his plans!! So proud to be part of this channel. Well done Neil !!!
Oh, man! The amount of work you have poured into this! But, I believe it has made the place something special. All the best for you, you really deserve it! What a treat to watch these videos. Thanks, Neil!
Everything looks awesome - you have taken the cave from exceptional to legendary level! Truly great to see both you and the cave evolve over the years. Between you, LGR, and Nostalgia Nerd, you are restoring my faith in humanity. You are a shining light in this insane world and I hope you never stop.
This might be silly but I really like the cleaning montages, whether washing computer plastics or building entire rooms. It always provides that much needed motivational kick up the backside to do the bi-monthly hoovering! :D
The Cave just gets better and better. I just looks wonderful. Well lit, open a spacious and your choice of materials and design style creates a very friendly and welcoming space. Due to being interested in other things, I was never a gamer but I love industrial design and technology and your displays are a real feast for the eyes. 👍😊
Neil, it’s amazing what you’ve created. You just look around and be in awe. I remember when you had that tiny studio with and you were forced to leave. Everything happens for a reason! Can’t wait to visit one day. Keep up the great videos ❤
You've really achieved something very special there. Very magnanimous of you to thank the supporters so, but the vision and the hard work is all down to you. Bravo sir!
Well done! That area is so lucky to have someone so passionate and dedicated to all these wonderful retro items. You've such a tremendous amount of work and it really shows!
Wow! The new lab and upgraded main area are such great improvements! The cave really is constantly evolving and getting better all the time. Can't wait to see what comes next!
Looking back over the time since the move, it is certifiably astonishing what you have achieved. You are living through most wonderful times! Long may it continue.
Hi Niel, I'm visiting the UK in June and am planning on coming in for one of those Saturdays to visit the Cave and the Arcade archive. I can't wait to see it. I'm from Winnipeg, Canada. You are a lot more of a handyman than I am. I'm thrilled when I can hang a picture on my wall straight 😀
@@RMCRetro Yes I booked for Sat June 10th. The morning session for The Cave and afternoon session for Arcade Archive. I'll be in the UK from June 3rd to 17th and I planned it so I'll be staying in nearby Stroud from June 9th-11th. I'm basically doing a big trip around the UK for my own TH-cam travel channel (i've been to the UK a few times before). I figure I can take a bus, uber, or taxi to the Cave in Chalford from Stroud? I'm not familiar with the area at all but I always enjoy learning how to navigate new places. :-) I've been watching your channel for years and I basically decided that the next time I'm in the UK I have to check it out!
SUGGESTION: Add four or eight live web-cams pointed at the various playable stations so people like me in Japan can shoulder-hop the players. Maybe even further down the road set up a tablet next to each so we can text comments to them as they play - cheering them on, offering instruction, or just sharing memories.
Ladies and Gentlemen can I start taking bets on how long that would last before trolls (this is the internet remember) appear and it gets shut down? Also am I the only one who thinks its sad Neil has to think about locking up his tools to stop people stealing them?
This could very well be the only reason I can think of for wanting to be back in the UK 😀 Really impressed in making a retro environment that is about the computers and tech, not just a reseller business, Thanks 🙂
A website where people can tour the cave virtually would be great, with the ability to look around in 360 and click on various systems / game boxes / etc to get more info. Probably a big project but it'd be great for people who can't get to the cave in person, or people who have been and just want to browse more and look at things they didn't get a chance to look at.
This reminds me of doing up a previous house I had about 20 years ago. I knew nothing about building, but I had to learn! The internet actually turned out to be very useful for a change! I ended up soundproofing all my neighbour facing walls by building new sound reducing stud walls against the existing brickwork. What brought it to mind was what you said about the CLS timber because I had the same problem. I used to go to B&Q, Homebase, Lawsons etc. and go through every bit of CLS they had until I had all straight bits, and that wasn't easy because I wasn't likely to get it all from a single shop. I did find though that it was ok to buy a few lengths that were warped along the narrow face of the timber as you could use those for the head and foot plates. You'd be screwing them into the floor and ceiling joists anyway, so that, combined with the pressure of the vertical studs would take the warp out, as long as it wasn't too severe. Man, I hated building work so I don't envy you. But you do get a nice sense of satisfaction when you've finished. I especially like the door you built with all the cassettes in it, that came out really good. I don't know how you find the time to get it all done!
You sir are a legend. I am so glad I found your channel. By proxy I think through LGR. This museum you are building makes me so proud. That I found you miscellaneously like 4 years ago I think. I need to book a visit to the cave sometime soon. Thank you. ❤ I am a C64 guy (born 84) so know roughly the area that you covered generally. Love it. ❤😊
Watching the RMC journey since the earliest cave had been such an amazing story. I'm still amazed how all this has happened and what a result. It's looks like the best place to be on earth right now. Loving all of it. Well done to Neil and the whole team! I spotted two things. An IT82 sticker which I had 100s of at the time from my friends dad's Tandy computer business. We 'borrowed' hundreds of them and plastered my local town in them at the time. Plus the Philips Console which I was gifted recently and I am trying to fix. I'm hoping it's just the battery chip that's needs replacing to make it work properly. I wish Mark fixes stuff lived next door for help as I want to get it working again! Also I am still building my own bedroom cave and my wife managed to get me a load of old fruit crates for mine as I copied your great idea. You are certainly very creative to a top room designer level. Keep up the good work. Have an IPA or three after all this. Thank you once again for RMC.
Well done Neil. You really are developing a Colossal Cave :-) Having seen it briefly as a donor, before it official opened, it's great to see how it keeps on evolving.
This video was a treat, really nice to see everything coming together. Maybe I new tour around the cave soon? I had a bit of trouble visualizing how the floor plan looks now. There seemed a lot of new exhibits as well to show for us who live abroad and can't visit so easily.
LOL I have that CRT. I carried it myself down two flights of stairs but it was easily 110% of my strength. My arms were wiped out for a couple days after. 112 pounds or so. It's a beast.
ah, the cave looks great. Unforuntately I live in Germany, so its a little too far to make a trip over to visit, but next time I'm back in the UK I'm definitely going to see if I can book a visit!
Beautiful. I would have been only 148 miles from you and would have spent much time in your cave if you had existed 30 years ago when I was stationed at RAF Mildenhall and lived in beautiful Bury St. Edmunds. Now, I'm I don't know how many thousands of miles away from you in Colorado.
I had no idea how huge the entire area you have was until this video. It's truly massive and extrordinarily impressive how much you've done so far. Given I live in Australia and am unable to travel overseas, I am truly enjoying being able to experience vicarisously through your videos, what you're doing here. Keep up the great work Neil.
What I'd love is someone to do full photogrammetry of the cave using high-res cameras so it can be fully built in 3D for something like the unreal engine and turned into a fully user controllable virtual tour of the cave, maybe with some simple interactive elements. It wouldn't actually be that hard to do and could easily be sold for a few quid on the RMC website as an extra source of income. It would also be a nice way people to explore the cave who just could not make to the real thing for whatever reason. Maybe do the same for the Arcade Archive.
Catching up with the world of Retro. Fantastic development to the Cave. I’ll have to make another visit to see the changes. Keep up the good work Neil!!
Really really great stuff!!! One suggestion I would like to make is to add some safety around that repair/lab table. At least a (mushroom type) safety switch, a dedicated power board and maybe even a isolation transformer (so people are isolated from mains by default) Also just the standard things.
Very nice, its a beautiful space! We live in a place built in the 1890s which is quite old for our area. We had to get used to losing the level and "Splitting the difference" on everything we build!
Neil id love more videos of a walk round the cave as i know its unlikely i will ever get to see it in person, i love what you have done and how far you have come, ive been watching you from some of your earliest videos, when the cave was not even thought about, long may it continue.
I've been watching your channel for some time now. This particular episode has it all. Would love to visit if I get to the UK. I hope in the meantime you have an excellent fire suppression system installed, it would be a tragedy if this vast collection was ever destroyed.
Great work Neil. Before I started watching your channel I didn’t have a clue how computers from the past could be fixed, refreshed and enhanced now I find it all fascinating. Keep up the good work.
The Cave is such an amazing venue and place now. simply incredible to see and visit, you guys have done nothing short of a miracle of history and retro memorabilia for everyone to see as well as Alex's mind-blowing Arcade Archive. Will hopefully visit in the next year or so if I can.
Keeping plants alive - well for a start, do not over water! Only wet it when dry and the submerge the whole pot for a short while. Most pot plants die from wet feet !
The Cave needs to be listed as a destination at the local travel agents. I would gladly pay for a vacation package that centers around retro computing with The Cave as the main attraction.
The new area looks awesome, I love the Code Masters door and the paneling. Also really love the new extended museum space, it will add so much to the experience of going through the displays. Hope to travel to the UK in the future and will definitely visit the cave and of course Arcade Archive.
Been watching you for a number of years now, and it's so nice to see you being able to live your dream. Maybe one day I'll be able to hop across the pond and visit!
Great video! Your hard work has paid off and it looks amazing. I remember most of the machines you show and I used to own a few of them back in the day, but alas, like many I'm sure, I practically gave my old machines away to make room for the next bigger better thing. Funnily enough I'm sat here at work right now where they don't bin their old systems and it is literally a museum (too grad a word, more like a pile of) old Apple Macs. They range from G3s, G4s, G5s, original iMacs and even a G4 Cube!
favorite quote from that whole video: "i am not charging anybody for hacksawing amigas..." but clearly then if you replace the word 'amiga' with 'atari st'
Fantastic work Neil. I started watching sometime around cave 2.0 and it's amazing to see how far you've come with the whole setup. Your hardworking and dedication is paying off as the cave goes from strength to strength.
You have a good eye for interior design. It is a very warm and welcoming space. If I ever get to the other side of the "pond" again, it's on my list to visit.
8:49 Done similar work, better to plot lines straight across the wall than rely on the individual boards to guide you since they're all a little different from each other.😉 I do admire your organization and scheduling skills, I'm struggling to rearrange my own, much smaller personal space heh. Yeah quite the progression very nice, hope you get to stay a long while.🙂
Phew! That was hard work but I'm really pleased with the result. If you'd like to support The Cave head to patreon.com/rmcretro - If you'd like to visit The Cave and see this for yourself head to retrocollective.co.uk

Well done, Neil! I wish you further flourish and growing in what you do. You and your team\helpers definately deserve it. Greetings from Germany
Thank you George

Love every bit of that. Absolutely awesome.
23:13 that's my 1980s school plastic blue briefcase - still have it and keep Christmas gift tags in it!
Another amazing addition to the Cave. You've done it again Neil. Really looking forward to future repair and Trash to Treasure videos from the lab.

I reckon spending a day in there would be no where near be enough to soak up all the nostalgia. I'd love to spend a week in there 😁
The live exhibit game dev sounds great! Just don't forget to feed him regularly and clean up after him.
Man, that's cool. It's amazing how far your space has come during the life of this channel.

I've been watching your channel for some time now. This particular episode has it all. Would love to visit if I get to the UK. I hope in the meantime you have an excellent fire suppression system installed, it would be a tragedy if this vast collection was ever destroyed.
Well done Neil, fantastic work!!!!
Thanks! Great job - keeping these systems alive!
Wow that's super kind thank you so much Dave
I think I've only been with you since 3.0, but my goodness what a beautiful place The Cave has become!
Fantastic Museum... a dream place for a retro computer lover
Can't wait until things are safer for me to visit! Thanks Neil!
Can't tell you how enjoyable these makeover videos are to watch. Watched twice now
You must be extremely satisfied with your hard work, looks great. A visit is in my pipeline of trips to arrange
Really fantastic what you have created their Neil (and RMC team!). Hope to visit this summer!
Nice tour of the cave Neil. Well done.
Just incredible! I love how much things have grown since the beginning, and seeing the repairs just topped it off!
I do miss the yellow videos about cleaning and repairing. The new ones are nice, but I do miss the early stuff too.
A different trash to treasure!! Well done!! From now on I guess it's Retro Machine Castle??
Fantastic video Neil! Ship’s mast 😂
Your work ethic is awesome Neil. Love your channel. And 'this week in retro'. I cant wait to visit the cave. Not too far from Dorset 👍
favorite quote from that whole video: "i am not charging anybody for hacksawing amigas..." but clearly then if you replace the word 'amiga' with 'atari st'
Just WOW! What an amazing space!
Just fantastic. I love the changes :-) Also good to see the new donated kit on show and looking forward to seeing the Dev Den.
Yeah quite the progression very nice, hope you get to stay a long while.🙂
It is very impressive, to see all that's been accomplished, & the evolution of the Cave. Well done Neal. :)
I've been watching all this from some of the first videos and the love and hard work you have all put into the cave is outstanding!
It just gets better and better. Well done Neil!
