JJ shows exactly why podcasts are becoming more popular then mainstream media. 1) he asks the questions we want to hear from players. 2) he gets real answers because the players know his motive is to show their side to the world, not get catchy headlines

I'm not a 6ers fan but I also defended Ben for a long time. I never liked those "he needs a jumpshot" or "he's just a jumpshot away" narratives people would push out. For me, just improve the FTs so you can control the ball in crunch time, in the bonus. But it looks like he finally flamed out from all the criticisms. It really is a shame how things turned out. I don't feel bad for him per say, he's a millionaire - but as a fan of basketball, I hate seeing a drafted team with a lot of potential go down the drain like that. Its a bummer. I just want balance in the league so competition remains interesting. That's all.

I feel like people needed to be realistic with his skill set. He didn’t have franchise scorer ever written on him. As a point forward his role was to facilitate and play defense which he did. The way I saw it was simple, Simmons FT shooting was hurting the team. A ball player will be the first to tell you, if your shot isn’t falling you need to be productive elsewhere. He realized he couldn’t make an offensive impact and potentially hurt his team at the FT line so he was passive. Philly had 3 guys who were scoring 20,30+ a night in Curry, Tobias and Embiid (who also deserve some blame for the loss) but wanted Simmons to asset himself offensively? As a coach you need to realize and make adjustments, which I didn’t see. The backlash he received after was absolutely unreal. Not sure if I’ve ever seen anything like that and for his teammate and coach to throw him under the bus after was a little insane, also something I’ve never seen. Ironically they got Harden (an all time scorer) who was just as much of a dissapearing act but gets no blame because “he’s a playmaker now”. Um… Simmons is pretty much solely a playmaker?

Keep in mind he achieved all these accolades without a jump shot. Seems to me that accepting who he is as a player and building with that would have been the more viable option until the sixers organization burned that bridge. As a result sixers traded for someone who also refuses to shoot during important times and does not play a lick of defense and who is also out of his prime.

Donovan Mitchell, Giannis, Siakam, OG, hell even Joel, and more recently Jordan Poole have all taken that next step and that’s what I feel like a great player is. It’s more so mentality than skills and accolades. The desire to want to improve, the desire to want to compete, the desire to want to win, the desire to want to do whatever it takes to get there. Honestly, if you watch Draymond play, he often just passes as well, for example when I watched the Finals vs Boston it seems like 90% of what he did was passing and bricking 3's and it's understandable that Simmons doesn't want to risk having to shoot free throws and wants to take more of a roll like Draymond regarding the passing. In that situation vs the Hawks, Gallo was behind and could've fouled him, Trae could've as well as you hear in his statement here.. He just really needs to work on his free throws because he is good at getting to the rim and drawing fouls and that's it. Giannis should be his role model in that matter, look how well he improved his free throws

As a Sixers fan, it was frustrating to see our all star point guard not have the confidence to take a jump shot. But I don't think it's necessary for Ben to develop a jump shot to be elite. He already has the defending and playmaking aspects of his game at a high level. If he can make free throws at an average rate or even slightly below average rate, teams won't have the option to send him to the line as a get out of jail free card for a possession. He's a 60% career free throw shooter. Bump that up to 70% and I think Ben is viewed differently around the league. I was a little bummed to see him leave Philly because of his potential, but I think it was the best option for both parties.

  • @JackFury

If Simmons thought the foul was coming, him making the pass is actually high IQ imo, knowing he’s not a good shooter (well believing he’s not atleast) he made a good decision. Assuming that’s what his train of thought was, could’ve also been fear.
