That is my model the 460V five inch muzzle brake equipped full lug barrel S&W X-frame revolver. Sent my cylinder to TK Custom and they made the cylinder fit their stainless steel moon clips. It was for shooting 45 ACP but the moon clips also hold 460 Rowland, 45 Super, 451 Detonics, and 45 Winchester magnum using Starline quality brass. A VERY versatile revolver.
I was about to comment about this EXACTLY. I did the same with mine and absolutely love it. It gives a significantly cheaper option to enjoy the revolver. :)
Great video! Lifelong Alaskan gal here. Been shooting firearms since kindergarten. I love my S&W .460 for predators (four-legged or two-legged) out in the forest & mountains. Even with my skinny hands and small frame. The weight of the .460 helps with the recoil more than a .44 or smaller, snubby revolver from my experience. Don't know many Alaskans who carry .500 revolvers, mostly .44 revolvers or semi automatic equivalent. Cheers!
Just yesterday i was practicing with 360 grain Buffalo bore hard cast getting ready for a fishing trip in bear country and was pleasantly surprised by the lack of heavy recoil. In the past i had only shot Hornaday XTP ammo. I love this gun.
Thank you for the video! I own this same model! I’m a 460 magnum lover! I have previously owned ever model of 460 that S&W offers including the Performance Center models except the 7.5 inch PC model. Currently I only own the 5 inch 460! Thank you again for the informative and entertaining video!
I have had my eye of the Performance Center snub nose. I really like the 5 inch. I imagine the PC would have quite a bit more recoil but have not had the opportunity to shoot one. Thanks for watching..
@@BigBoreGuns not too bad I’ve got the 6 inch barrel on the 500 and the 8 3/8 on the 460 recoils not to bad been shooting some 700 grain rounds through the 500 as well
I use the cast bullet muzzle brake exclusively as it seals the upper porting and makes it closer to a true five inch barrel. And it shoots jacketed bullets as well so I don’t use the jacketed bullet only muzzle brake at all.
Great tip, I have not done that. It would be a good test to see if there is a velocity increase using the other "Lead" brake without the porting. Also nice you not having to change out the break frequently.
Thanks for sharing. I watched a lot of reviews and am ruminating between a 5 in. and 8 in.. The revolver isn't a need, just an extra on-hand. I think the 8 in. is about 1/2 pound heavier and weight can help w/ recoil. But for "storage", the smaller dimensions of 5 in. are appealing. Definitely prefer the finish of Smith & Wesson over the matte Taurus models.
I see lots of 460 reviews. I've owned at least one since 2016 or so. I got it for bear defense living around coastal Alaska. But they are one of the more versatile guns out there and the recoil is manageable. Trust me. With big bears you want to have the option of a quick second shot. You don't want a gun whose recoil causes a delay getting back on target.
Thanks for replying. I think it really depends a lot on the shooter. I hear a lot of people praise the 10mm however when I read the details of their attacks, many victims are badly injured and it took quite a few rounds to take the bear down. 10mm will deliver about 615 FPE which seems pretty low for a Brown Bear. A 460Mag is much more powerful and likely to stop the bear. At over 200lbs and 2X hands, the 460 Mag is easy for me to get on target pretty quickly. If your recoil sensitive, smaller frame or have small hands, the 460Mag could be a handful and not your best option.
Hey, that variable rifling you mentioned is super interesting, thanks for mentioning that! I've been shooting 44mag for about a year and I think I'm ready to step it up a notch.
Wholeheartedly agree, the 460 isn't bad too shoot at all.I Interestingly, imo, the 454 casull is a bit more unpleasant than the 460. I use the Taurus Raging Hunter in 460, and it's good! Subbed!
Thanks for commenting. I have heard the same from others about the 454. I think it really depends on which round you are shooting. Have wanted to try out a Raging Hunter. They are a great price right now and look nice.
@BigBoreGuns if you do get it, do let us know what you think. I spoke about it on my channel, and I love the gun. It's super reliable and shoots flawlessly.
Great video! I have two questions I hope you can answer. First I have the S&W 3.5" Performance Center 460 Mag. and with the 3.5" or 4" barrel models, is the gain twist rifeling still present? or only in the longer barreled models? Second what kind of accuracy did you have using the S&B 255gr 460 mag rounds??
Thank you for watching. The SB rounds were very accurate for me but I was shooting at only a max of 25 yards. Hadn’t had a chance to try it at longer ranges yet. I believe the gain twist rifling is not really limited to a specific barrel length, it’s a design that helps manage the 460mag model x-frame revolver cartridges. I am envious, really like the performance center model but don’t have one yet.
I’ve been on the fence a long time not sure if this would be a great EDC I definitely I like the versatility of three different types of ammunition 45 long colt anyone have any experience with that?
It depends on where you are carrying and what you are trying to stop. If I was in grizzly country might be a good choice but it is a heavy gun and for other situations there are better choices. 45LC has light recoil and shoots nicely.
Love the stock grip. It fits really well in larger hands and with larger arms, recoil should really be tame. I shoot a modified Windsor stance which is very comfortable for me. Most people shoot with a Combat stance which I find a bit uncomfortable because of my size.
Thanks for reply. Great round. Really like them. That actually feel like they rival some of the 460MAGs. Their recoil doesn't really bother me but I am not recoil sensitive.
@@BigBoreGunswhy does the 5 inch 460 magnum come with 2 compensators can you use the one for hardcast for jhps too because it would be kinda hard to change out in the field I just ordered mine today be here sometime next week 😊
You’re right, the one that’s on gun when you get it is for jackets. Honestly I have never changed mine. I have heard that lead will come out ports if you don’t use the one for hard cast but I hardly shoot them so have not changed out. I even put lock tight on mine because it was a bit loose when I first got the gun and I didn’t want to have it loosen up again.
My family went to Maui, Hawaii in 2022. A watermelon about that size cost us $12. I hate to see yours blow apart for fun! A gallon of 1 percent milk was about that price too! I have twin S&W 500’s in a custom Craft Rotoholster. I have to eat the watermelon and find something else to shoot!
I think it must make a big difference. Talked to someone at a different manufacturer that doesn’t use it and they were pretty firm on not shooting 45LC or 454 in their 460Mag. They said it would work but can cause issues with the jump to the forcing cone which could damage the gun and that they found with theirs the gun was not accurate using non-460 ammo.
Thanks for your feedback. I haven’t tried those and Smith and Wesson says not to use them in the 460. They may fit but I wouldn’t recommend them unless manufacturer said it was OK

I used the EGW Optic mount for X-Frame. A solid mount that fits perfectly without drilling/taping the gun. Lower profile that the Rail mounts.
