Booster +1 multi fuel stove review. The best stove for traveling ?

  • The Booster +1 multi fuel stove is the only piece of kit I have come across that manages to really fit the description of "multi-fuel". It will run on canister gas as well as liquid fuels such as meths, alcohol, diesel, petrol...the list goes on. I think its safe to say that if the liquid will burn, it will probably work in this stove. (I have a stove with a similar burner head that I have successfully used cooking oil as a fuel - I was messy but it worked)
I bought this kit with my own money, for my own personal use. There's no sponsorship or freebies, so this is just my honest review of what I consider to be the best, budget friendly multi fuel stove I own.
Unless you're hung up on only having the ultra-lightest kit, this could well be the last stove you'll ever need.
Up to £90+ but similar items are available at a lower price. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...

That’s awesome! The do-it-all stove. Paired with a trangia or a copycat, a spoon and a knife and you are literally set for life when it comes to a proper traveling, camping or bicycle touring cookset.
Thank you so much for the agenda-free review! Much appreciated

Thanks for sharing! As a "stove nut" I'm experimenting with all kinds of camping stoves all the time, with simple meths burners being my favourites. It fascinates me, how that meths stove quietly got it's job done, too, all without the hissing, gaskets, pumps, hoses, pressurized bottles etc. BTW: A lid on that pot and a simple windshield would have helped to reduce the time to achieve a rolling boil dramatically.

The Omnifuel works perfectly with both gas and liquid fuel and has the great two valve reglutators.

The absolute last stove you would ever need to buy is a Primus Omnifuel. Yes they are more expensive than your BRS, but if you put them side by side they're miles apart for build quality, useability, particularly simmering, safety and user serviceability with field service kits available. If you like the idea of this style of stove, then you'll be shocked at the difference. I'd recommended you try and view one, they're really excellent bits of kit and will last a lifetime if you look after them.
    Enjoy and thanks for sharing.

11 years sound good. My chinese knock off almost identical to this one lasted one boil. Dozen of O-rings fell apart when I tried to clean the pipes that were clogged with carbon. I made it work again by removing the wire inside the copper gasifier but it leaks, stinks and it's loud like a little fighter jet. Chinese didnt have spare o-ring set. It was my last multi-fuel stove. My dad had Coleman once and it lasted for years. Then the o-rings killed it too. Until someone makes it without rubber, all metal, it's BS. You can only use it outside anyway. It takes too much time to turn it upside down to drain the hose of fuel before turning it off and you wanna do that otherwise you'll smell gasoline for weeks. Try timing a boil when this can take like 5 minutes. The noise and toxic smell arent worth it anyway. Propane-butane is so much better. So fast and clean and adjustable! This is such a BS! I thought it's the perfect stove for SHTF but it's not. It's constant cleaning, servicing and repairing...@@simon_8388

I have tried a few MFB's and find the best is a Trangia Mk1 MFB, which uses the Optimus Nova burner (have to get it second hand or get a nova/polaris and a converter mount, or you can stand it under a Trangia 25 with the legs shut). The original Trangia/optimus combo had the Swedish made burners, which are great. Trangia used to still sell the converter mount to make it up, and Optimus do one too - or get an old one in a mount. I have switched the Nova pump for Polaris on mine to give gas canister option. That is a bit more if a fiddle because you have to mod the Trangia to make the fuel line fit, along with the regulator on the burner, because the C fitting on the fuel line is too big for the hole in the Trangia - cut a slot below the small hole in the Trangia and sit the fuel line over it (or you can detach and reattach the fuel line at the burner end. It's easy, but do it carefully and keep the joint clean and undamaged, use an inner tube cap to protect the connection on the burner when storing separately from the fuel line). It works very well, no jet changing for anything from Paraffin to jet fuel. The gas canister can be used upside down to get more heat, work in colder weather and get it empty properly and you can take a normal Trangia burner as backup or to use alcohol fuels (or a gel tin) - covers everything. I ran it on turps once, worked but dirty. Ordinary petrol is fine. Jet fuel goes a long way but is scary. The Trangia surround ups the performance a lot and is safer. I use Aspen 4 Alkalate petrol mostly, it's clean, and I prime with meths (no soot) and use a Dawg silencer - you particularly should use meths/bio-fuel to prime if using a silencer, to save dirtying it. It works in a 25 or a 27 Trangia - my preference is 27 wth 2.5L billy can with raised type lid and metal handle - the whole cooker fits in it (tho not the MFB if you're using that too).

I am a stove addict lol, this is my fave multi fuel on price point, my go to multi fuel stove for convenience is the optimus polaris optifuel, no need to change nozzles and bought a polardawg to reduce noise, if i had to pick a long term multi fuel stove to use it would be the msr whisperlite universal+ a couple of maintenance kits, it will last decades while using it every day, the whisperlite and optimus also have a shaker needle to clear the jet, important thing to remember when using something like petrol is buy the cheapest with the fewest additives, that will clog everything up, or my go to is aspen 4.

While a good looking stove, the weak part about it is not having direct flame control. As you displayed here, throttling the flame on multifuel with a tank only valve is a touchy affair. Having the ability to use the bottle valve as an on/off valve while having a separate valve on the stove itself lets you INSTANTLY adjust the flame to whatever setting you like. You have nice even pressure, all the way to the stove instead of the lag you see because of the liquid in the line acting as a kind of out of control spring. You spend an hour chasing a good simmer with this one on liquid. On canister gas, they're fine in vapor mode. But on liquid mode(inverted canister for cold weather) you'll run into similar issues as with liquid fuel. A real man has at least 20 stoves to pick from......haha! Just kidding.... Go with what works for you and enjoy life.

Yeah, you need the bottle if you're going to use the liquid fuels like petrol or alcohol. Its a good metal container, but the most important bit is the pump that pressurises it.

      Hi Guys, Thanks for commenting.
I think that's a really interesting idea! In the UK, most spirits are around 37% so need to be heated up before they burn. However if you're sourcing a locally brewed "vodka" , it'll probably have a higher alcohol content.
Keep an eye on the channel and I'll give it a go over the next few weeks with a supermarket vodka. If it doesn't go straight away, I'll add IP alcohol to the mix and see at what point it does go.
      Stay safe and have fun.

That's a lie. This one is pretty much ON, OFF, or ultra high and loud. You cannot reduce the flow to a gentle burn. The other thing he is not saying like all the others is how often he has to pump it for it to keep going. I had to pump mine too often such that it became very inconvenient.

    • @9abe9
      @9abe9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@alphainfinitum3445 I'm sorry, that is very unfortunate. Maybe the model you bought isn't working properly, or is a bad design! I bought a similar one by accident, trying to buy this exact stove. Mine does get to a very gentle and low heat level, but it is indeed very noisy, it sounds just like a jet plane taking off, and the flame pattern is a little small, so the heat dispersion is not that great. I will try to fashion a "silencer", search for one of those on the internet, its kinda like a regular stove burner, with lots of holes, to see if it helps with heat dispersion.
Regarding the pumping, mine works very well with just the initial 10 pumps to prime it.
From the moment when It starts going, I don't have to pump it anymore. The only time when I had to was when it was getting cold here, close to 10°C. I live in Brazil, here it is very hot most of the time, closer to 30°C.
I'm using 100% ethanol (or meth spirits, as you guys say)

@owtnabowt Thats a really nice video! I've seen lots of people saying those multifuel stoves can't burn alcohol. So, just to clarify, the meths you are using is methylated spirits, which is 95% ethanol? Here in Brazil we know it only by Ethanol, or alcohol, and it is used to power cars, similar to the E85, but it is actually 100% ethanol. If so, this is a really, really cool stove indeed! I've been looking for a stove that can burn Ethanol for a while, and yours is the only video showing it in action! The main advantage of this over a simple can with alcohol is the simmer control, which makes a huge difference

@@9abe9 Thanks for the comments. Correct about the meths. The reason I use meths, is that I also use it in my Phantom stove, which is my quick brew kit. As an aside, I did an experiment with this stove using it with shop bought Vodka (40% by vol).Managed to get it going but it took a lot of preheating and there was a lot of water waste.

You may want to inspect the O-rings frequently and replace them with high-nitrile rubber or fluorated rubber ones. Please do your own research read up on material compatibility and stay safe! I modified a whisperlite (petrol only) stove to run on ethanol a couple of years back. It looks like you have the same issues controlling the power i.e getting too much fuel at times, flooding the burner (can you get away with a smaller jet? If memory serves a 0.38-0.40mm diameter was optimal on the wisperlite but that is dependent on the air-fuel ratio, YMMV). This is not an issue if you are aware of it, but I will never give my frankie to someone new to liquid fuel stoves. Also, alcohols are corrosive to aluminum and most aluminum fuel bottles are not coated on the inside anymore. Do not store alcohols in aluminum cans for extended periods as the material will fail, especially if pressured. I believe the optimus bottles are still coated, but again, do your own research and stay safe!

Thanks Paul, good advice. I had a perished o-ring in the pump become apparent a month or so ago. Fortunately i wasn't in a position where I was reliant on it. I put a new one on and its as good as new.

@@owtnabowt2723 Glad to hear you got that sorted! I just wanted to point out the inherent risks of running the equipment outside it's intended scope, as it is most certainly not obvious to your audience. Btw, how is your fuel consumption running methanol or ethanol compared to petroleum fuels? My modded one burns about 25% more fuel on alcohol than on petroleum, which is expected. Another cool thing I can do with my stove (and probably you too), mix you alcohol with about 10-15% water to increase efficiency (exhaust fumes have greater thermal mass, and fuel rate is more easily controlled), at the cost of peak power.

    Hello There ,
its a clone from the old Primus Himalaya MFS ...

Hi Jürgen, Great to hear from you and thanks for stopping by.
Just looked up that stove, they are almost identical. I did have it burning IPA but it was too sooty, so swutched to meths and had no problems with it. Much cleaner too. My old multi fuel stove (a Coleman rip-off I think) has run on Deisil, petrol, meths, and I even managed to get it going with old cooking oil, but that spluttered continuously and made more of a sooty mess than the IPA.
I was wondering where that jet went. It looks like I missed the bag when I was putting it away. On the plus side, I'm heading out that way this evening, and not a lot of people go there so you never know, it MIGHT still be there. I'll let you know. 👍
      Stay safe, Have fun
      Andy

I've not had any issues yet. 🙄 But i'll definately keep you updated if it startes to fail. I do have another multi fuel stove that does a weird thing every now and then where the pump goes all loose and doesnt seem to do anything, but its always corrected itself after a few pumps.
