You're such a great artist! If I had to choose, I'd say I'm a "colored pencil" kind of person!

On a different youtube account, I used to watch you all the time from the time I was 14 clear into my early 20's. I'm 27 now and so much has changed... However, this video gives me the same vibes your videos did back when I was 14. The same, warm inviting feeling. That same inspiration and desire to be creative.
Thanks for always making such wonderful videos!

When you said you looked at your own hard wood floor for reference? That was so relatable! I can't count the number of times I've done something similar. =P
Also, that marker wood grain trick is a stroke of artistic brilliance! I saw that and immediately got the urge to get out my cheap markers. XD

I tend to use colored pencils because I'm pretty severely colorblind... when I use water color I tend to produce some bizarre looking color schemes, at least to other people's eyes.

the dark edges of the gain is the summer growth of the tree, it will be harder and denser compared to the lighter spring growth.

Hey Mr. Crilley. I love your work you do for us artists and the readers of your books WORLD WIDE. That sir is a ton of people. The number has many zeros to show it. I’m going to try this wood lesson shortly. Your marker is spot on. Keep up teaching, you are valued. And BE SAFE. WEAR YOUR MASK.

    great video!
what about mixed media? use w/c for the b/g as its quick and doesn't leave white spots. overlay with colour pencils for details, much sharper with finer control.

Hello Mark, I tried the 3 different methods:
I tried using the skin tone makers and it looks like a waxed finished.
The color pencils look very realistic and I used a blending pencil to make it look solid.
Lastly, the water color was the hardest. It would give a marble finish look.
Thanks again for the tutorial. 😁👍

looks awesome, but something that can be great for illustrations is wood comes in vast colors from greens, yellows, reds even bright purple. and grain pattern also changes depending on the log was milled, Then layers of the sap wood and heart wood. the diffrence from the hard to soft grain lines can add a huge variety to art works

Man, you do those pieces of wood in such a nice way, I can't get this sort of "perfect irregularity" especially when drawing grass, trees and nature elements. It would be great if you did this kind of videos with this elements. I have mastering manga 1 and 2, and as you said background plays an important role in manga (not to say they are bad, they are great books that helped me a lot) but there is only one section about drawing trees, grass rocks are mentioned but without the step by step instructions to create this irregularities. So I would love to see a video with this.

I should really pick up painting one day. I tried it when I was younger but I wasn’t very good and struggled with fine details.
Pencils are nice but having to put differentiating pressure takes a toll on your wrist. Markers are also nice but they aren’t the most elegantly precise tools in existence.

  • @artatjules

@markcrilley I like to use watercolour as an underpainting and then colour pencils on top, it gives both three freedom and unpredictable nature of watercolour and the control from the pencils for the details

I've always wondered what the back of his demonstration books must look like now after all those times that he's placed then on his just finished projects as he thanks his audience for getting said books. Often times -- mostly with his Beloved White Gouache -- the wet (markers included) medium hasn't fully dried by the time he gets to the thanking part if the video. Surely, the back of his books are no longer immaculately pristine and free of foreign medium by now. I would be genuinely surprised if they were. In fact, I would be utterly impressed and stumped if that were the case.
Mark, I am posing a very odd, however, nonetheless innocent request being that it is impelled by unfathomable curiosity... Could you, please, show us the back of some of your books to see if, or how, they have withstood all your wet(-ish) "thank yous" throughout the years. I do thank you -- sadly, without a book to show my gratitude -- ahead of time should you decide to go that extra mile for a loyal viewer since the early days of the Brody's Ghost drawing illustration sessions.🤗

For today, I really like the marker. The last two just do not make the grade. Thanks again. If you want an idea , how about human skin. That might be really good. Coloured pencils, blending, burnishing would be a great lesson.
