    Thanks Ian -"Racket Path".... as usual good, specific teaching...this time on serving ...good tips Kirby and from Ira,....how to practice...start at 50%...think about teh shape of the swing, the swing path, listen for specific sounds depending on the type of serve you are hitting..."swing shape" , I like that. Kick serve "action plan." I like that...thanks ..Kirby makes good points on the importance of the toss...good tips we can practice to improve on this important "shot." If we do not work to improve our serve we will be locked into a 3.0 level at best.

    The third point is a key one - and a staple element to the building blocks of improvement with Essential Tennis videos, programs, etc. Starting slow in terms of acceleration is critical. I used to think doing everything at match speed aided improvement in practice. However, if you cannot execute something in slow(er) motion at 20-30-40-50% with hitting the sweet spot and consistently performing, there is no way a player will ever have consistency doing it in a match with the variables of the opponent, stress of game situation, etc. I devote a vast majority of practice time to locking in fundamentals at slower speeds and over the past few months experienced vast growth of my match play skills as a result. I used to experiment with a new tip or trick for a few minutes and then quickly forget about it and revert to old habits. That pattern never gets a player improvement. Instead, pick an aspect of your game - could be a stroke like forehand, backhand, or volleys, or something specific like a kick serve - but spend a few weeks hitting it with regularity, at slow speeds, and progress through action plans like Essential Tennis outlines. Then assess progress.

    Great video, guys! I would throw in the importance of using your abs when going through the trophy pose for preventing any back injuries in this type of serve. These could take place when someone is still learning the correct body position as more often than not you are in a different pose than you'd think. By contracting your ab muscles you can prevent excesive strees on your lower back. Thanks!

    First time taking the Kick Serve Action Plan to the practice court and spending half of my 2-hour session on building through the steps. I have a decent kick serve, but not as good as it can be.
    From your knees: I generated plenty of top spin and kick, but for about 20-30 reps I did not get a single serve over the net from the baseline. They would dive bomb and hit the net or bounce in front. I really had to focus on the upward motion to get the elevation-net clearance.
    Next was full shadow swings, easy motion, and slowly progressing to more racquet head speed from a standing position. I immediately had more spin and movement on my serve than >95% of the kick serves I hit in practice or matches previously. On my best kick serve of the session, the ad side is adjacent to a brick wall and walkway (maybe 7-8 feet high) and I nearly cleared the wall after hitting the wide corner with a serve. I had to laugh as the serve would have been over the head of every opponent I know at the club and they would have been into the wall if attempting to return it. While a fleeting moment, it showed the potential of continuing to work and gain consistency with this essential stroke.
    Thanks Essential Tennis (Ian, Ira, Kirby) and keep up the great work!

      Isabela fernandez Yeah, but they’re doing the same thing these guys are saying... ball isn’t going way back behind them for back breaking stuff, it’s going relatively straight above them. Also the direction of the racquet is also doing what they say, away from the target and flowing along the baseline when finishing off. Still looks good to me...

    An additional point for the ball toss placement is that throwing the ball behind you telegraphs your intention to hit a kick serve, and gives your opponent more time to react to the ball placement.
    Ideally the throw and swing should look very similar (as much as possible) for the flat, spin and kick serves to give you an advantage by disguising your serves.

  • @jacobs-h398
    @jacobs-h398 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm just having a lot of trouble with the acceleration and relaxed arm on the kick serve. With the flat serve, the body uncoiling lends itself to raquet head speed so you can keep your arm loose and it turns into a whip, but with kick serve you're not supposed to turn your body too soon and the raquet path doesn't follow the body's path which means the acceleration has too come from the arm,?, but how do stay relaxed also?? They seem and feel contradcitory.

  • @johnmerrill5633
    @johnmerrill5633 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It seems like my more effective kick serves have huge net clearance and give my opponent a lot of time, but also tend to produce the most kick as well. Is it better to have a long time-of-flight and more kick?

    • @GiocareaTennis

      Essential Tennis - Lessons and Instruction for Passionate Players The movement of the racket is "the most" useful. The toss of the ball is ok, the acceleration of the racket is Ok, but many times the players move the racket forward to the target hitting a flat serve. I think the key for a great kick serve is the circular movement of the racket..

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree completely, Marco. You can toss in just the right spot and accelerate like crazy but if the swing path is wrong no topspin is happening. Thanks for watching and for posting your thoughts!

  • @fdctrumpet
    @fdctrumpet 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    All the tips in the video are critical. The two which stood out that I needed to work on the most were relaxation and acceleration. They go hand in hand, but hitting with more spin than you are used to mandates almost an uncomfortable amount of acceleration. It takes plenty of practice (and faith) to use the required acceleration in matches, on second serve, late in the second set, to execute well.

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you know what you need to focus on, Chad! Have you had the chance to practice yet?

    • @fdctrumpet
      @fdctrumpet 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, hit out on second serves throughout a matchup 2 days after practice session, forcing myself to integrate more horizontal arm motion and acceleration. In general, kick serves were improved but did double fault twice uncharacteristically in a third set tiebreaker. All part of the learning experience and I would rather be hitting loose and learning to apply new tools with some growing pains than staying inside a comfortable (and conservative) box!

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't let those misses bother you, 100% part of learning something new. If you saw improved topspin/kick then in the long run those few misses will be completely worth it, trust me. Keep up the good work!

    @dr.louisemmons3846 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great teaching. I appreciate that you have not gone to the extremes that others do to teach what the kick serve motion looks like. One added comment is that I was wondering what grip you are using for the kick serve. Am I right in saying the correct grip is the continental grip or are there other grips we may experiment with?

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      At least continental, Dr. Emmons. Anything close to a forehand grip will make a kick serve impossible. For some, changing a bit further towards one handed backhand is helpful, but honestly it isn't nearly as necessary as most make it sound. Definitely feel free to experiment, but please know that grip is irrelevant if the swing path isn't correct! Swing as fast as you want with a one handed backhand grip, if the rest of the mechanics are off there will be zero topspin. Make sense?

  • @marcesses4005
    @marcesses4005 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are kick serves the same as topspin serves?

  • @fdctrumpet
    @fdctrumpet 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    From my experience, the swing path adjustment is the most difficult adjustment. Like using your legs or other aspects of tennis shots, recording yourself is the only way to truly see what you are (or are not) doing when learning or practicing your serve. It is eye-opening to think you are doing one thing (or to a certain level) only to record yourself and see only a minimal amount of what you imagine/feel/sense while doing the stroke or drill.

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SUCH an accurate and important comment, Chad. It's all about swing path, and 99% of tennis players have absolutely no clue what they're actually doing in reality. I agree with you completely - video is vital. -Ian

    Don't know if it's only me but tried to request the free serve action plan using messenger but didn't receive it. Is there another way to get it?

  • @fdctrumpet
    @fdctrumpet 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    One question on kick serve application:
    It seems the two most common uses/placement are up the 'T' on the deuce side and out wide on the ad side (assuming right-hander to right-hander). Is it also for use on a body serve to target slightly to forehand side so it runs into them post-bounce?
    In doubles matches, I have seen greater impact from the deuce side kicker, tremendously cutting down the angle for the returner as I serve-and-volley and my partner squeezes the middle, than an overt kicker wide to the ad side (as the return angle is more open with partner covering more of the line).

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can absolutely target the right hip to produce a body serve, Chad! Just be sure that your kick serve actually does "kick" back out to the right.....lots of players have topspin serves that only bounce up, and if it sites out on the forehand side against a great opponent they'll make you pay!

    • @fdctrumpet
      @fdctrumpet 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I notice the club pros and academy type teenagers are very aggressive running around any second serve to hit forehands, even shifting immediately into the alley on the deuce side...the counter to the expected middle of box or backhand side kick serve most at their level hit. So important to change up with some slice down the T to keep them more honest from time to time.

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      100%. I especially like what you said about going the other way (to the forehand corner) to keep them "honest". That's key against a really aggressive mover who's doing everything possible to hit all forehands. Great patterns, you've been paying close attention, my friend :-)

  • @vesperredaxchow1465
    @vesperredaxchow1465 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The only thing I would add to this Ian is your stance and torso turn. When you hit your kick serve you need to have you back facing the net so you can accelerate the ball on it's side easier. You change your stance to accommodate this. Feet a little more parallel to the base line. Otherwise you were spot on.

    • @vesperredaxchow1465

    Ian, I play tennis quite a lot and when playing for days on end I make a lot of improvements. However when not playing for a week I lose almost all my skills learned and I take a while to get back into the swing of things. How do I prevent myself from forgetting these things like my technique for example?

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have a wall at home that you can use? Even just a small one with foam balls, just so you can have a racquet in your hand and direct a ball for short, little shots?

  • @rigonqarkaj1243
    @rigonqarkaj1243 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Which grip are you using? Because for me it is very hard to pull off the kick serve while using the continental grip.

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean that you're turned up higher towards one handed backhand? When I hit a topspin serve I turn upwards towards bevel 1 a little bit, but not much. Topspin is definitely possible with continental, but it is helpful to turn it a bit....all the way up to the top is definitely NOT needed!

    • @rigonqarkaj1243
      @rigonqarkaj1243 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I fully stretch my arm way to the top, so next time I will try to turn it a bit hoping it will work for me. That's the reason I now use the flat serve.

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya, I'd definitely recommend experimenting with SMALL changes to see how it affects the amount of spin you get. Definitely not necessary to crank it way over. Let me know how it works!

      @allboutthemojo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Essential Tennis - Lessons and Instruction for Passionate Players Thanks. I was just joking anyway but just wanted to point out that the swing speed thing being a total feel thing can be challenging to control when learning a new stroke since most people really tighten up when you give them on court instructions of what to do. Regardless, it is the correct way to muscle memorize a new motion as shown here!

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it actually was a really good question because some players automatically "get" what that means and what it feels like but others have no idea. We'll probably do a video about it!

  • @ahmadsarwar6814
    @ahmadsarwar6814 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a question, recently my forehands have started to become worse and I’m trying to copy modern forehands that pros do. However, pros like Nadal, Djokovic etc. have complicated forehands that I have trouble copying. Which pro would u recommend that I copy his modern forehand. Forgot to mention that I use a semi-western grip.

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's absolutely critical that you copy the big, fundamental elements that ALL pros have in common, Ahmad. NOT every little detail of any one pro's swing. We all have different bodies that naturally move in different ways, but the base, core movements are the same for all great players. Here's a forehand video where I pick just three or four things to focus on, and I recommend you focus on the same big things: th-cam.com/video/kPW2tfm0T0Q/w-d-xo.html

    A bit of clarity is needed; Kirby said toss the ball straight up directly over your head but, Ira's ball toss was clearly behind him, to his left and into the court, thats what happens when you have 3 people with slightly differing techniques trying to achieve the same thing. Too many cooks as it were

    I would think a good racket drop is important for the acceleration; so the racket travels a longer way, and build up more speed?

      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're absolutely right, Joakim. Have you ever recorded your own serve so you can see how good your racquet drop is?

      Thanks for replying!
      Yes, just bought a phonestand three days ago, recorded slow motion with my iphone 5s, looks great (the video quality, not the serve...)
      My drop needs to be a lot deeper, but so does my knee bend and accuracy :-(
      Anyway, I got the basic principles right, so Ill just go on practicing, using your practice plan, and some more video analysis
      Regarding the racket drop; one thing that helps is is to think "bounce!" right before the stroke, that also helps a bit with the footwork :-)

      To make your racquet drop more effective, try practicing with just 2 or 3 fingers, with your palm heal pad off the base of the racquet. Much less impingement of the motion of the racquet itself, and this eases tension in the shoulder and forearm. Also, don't be afraid to experiment with the opening of the face/stringbed - what is often missed is that the kick serve trajectory is UP from the moment of contact.

    Good tips, good concise presentation. But, tips on doing a stroke, without showing the actual stroke lose a lot of value. The things I hoped to see: Show a good kick serve. Show the graduated acceleration, slow to full speed. It would add 10-15 seconds but would improve the video 100%.

      I think the thing I struggle with the most is the swing or racquet path. Either I hit with too much side spin (goes way to much to the left and out) or I'm hitting to flat (doesn't have a enough spin to curve/slide). And when I do get right I've noticed that I have to really slow down my whole swing and have noticed that I lose my rhythm on serve. I really want to develop a nice slice serve out wide on deuce side and down the t on ad side. please help

    A tennis instructional video where no one hits a ball. Genius!

  • @lorddantan
    @lorddantan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have watched so many topspin/kick serve instruction videos on youtube. There are more than 20. I always start playing the video with hope, and end with disappointment. Finally, I broke down and wrote this comment - Everybody talks about the grip, the toss, the movement; everybody talks about the brushing up, the clock face, the pronation, the racket head speed. Not a single video mentions the timing. Some videos compare the differences between a flat serve vs a topspin serve. In that, only the grip and the racket movement are discussed. The difference between the two serves in timing maybe only a fraction of a second, but THAT, makes the world of difference, and that is the most difficult thing to learn. An average player gets used to hitting the flat serves at the highest point would have heck of a time STARTing the swing slightly later to meet the ball half way down to allow the extra room for brushing up. The intuition built over time on when to begin the swing in order to meet the ball at the highest point for flat serves is extremely difficult to overcome. And no one, not a single video discusses how to adjust the timing to meet the ball half way down for the topspin serve. Very disappointing ... People who watch your video and do everything exactly like you said, still have little success in mastering the kick, some can tear their hair out and don't know why ... timing is the missing link.

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SUPER insightful comments, Dan! You're absolutely correct: the ball must fall further before contact is made, because if the arm and racquet are at full extension there's literally no way to continue swinging up! This is something I know I've talked about in some of our private coaching lessons.....wasn't able to find which one or where right away, but I don't think its made it to any of our tutorials yet. Most definitely a critical part, and something we'll be sure to highlight more in the future. Cheers! -Ian

    • @lorddantan
      @lorddantan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much for the quick reply, Ian!!! I know the why, some suggestions on the how will be super helpful. Knowing the concept, and the tips you guys have given, I must have practiced thousands of times. Occasionally, (less than 1%), I get a serve I really liked - i.e. the ball kicks up and out with some pace. But I can't even do two consecutively. It is very hit and miss for me. Ideally, I would love for the ball to hit the side fence or the back fence before any bounce. It's easy on the flat serve, not the kick serve. That happened less than 5 time out of thousands I tried. For now, I am only aiming for 1 bounce before the fence. Most of the time, nowhere near that ... balls kick up with no pace, drop 3,4 times before reaching the fence ;( ... I would like to thank you and your colleagues very much for all of the instruction videos on TH-cam. Wish I was affluent enough to join the camps, which I am sure have tremendous value. You guys have done a fabulous service for the enthusiasts!

    • @lorddantan
      @lorddantan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Amy - you can follow what everyone says and make the racket swing path with the brushing up motion, but if your racket eventually meets the ball at your arm's full extension, you won't get the ball to rotate forward to achieve the topspin result you want. The key is for the racket to meet the ball lower than your arm's full extension. To do that, you'll have to begin the upward swing at a fraction of a second later. That timing is not easy to master consistently, because you start the swing when the ball is up there far from the racket, and once you begin the swing, it is a continuous motion, you can't stop middle point to adjust based on where the ball is. Hope this helps

      Slice serves curve from right to left for a righty....and a true kick serve kicks up and out from left to right, so the ad side just makes the most sense to show and demonstrate it. That being said, the deuce side is absolutely viable for the righty kick as well!
