- In this episode of Behind the Portrait, we are taking a look at Maria Portinari and her two portraits by Hans Memling, and Hugo Van der Goes. She was a Florentine noble woman who married 40 year old, Tommaso Portinari in 1470. Not much is known about her life but she lives on through these beautiful portraits.

What I find interesting about these two pieces is that it shows how quickly she aged during her marriage. She's more freshfaced in the earlier portrait, whereas in the later you can see lines in her neck and her cheeks or more sunken.
Thank you
Thank you for watching! 😊
Great idea for a channel. ❤😊
Thank you! 😊
I’d LOVE to see that necklace in real life!
Same!!
An excellent video, Ms Lynny! Thanks-right on the money, as always; you're the bee's knees!
You viewers might like to know that the monster, who's head we see behind Maria in the van der Goes painting, refers to a medieval conceit that the whole world, including the serpent, came to worship the baby Christ.
("Goes", by the way, is pronounced HO-ehs. I always feel ridiculous when I'm pronouncing it in my lectures; so, I understand your not doing it!!!)
Haha! Yea, I usually plan out how I’ll pronounce certain words before hand but then as I record that changes sometimes. Especially with the different languages and accents. 😄
Glad you enjoyed the video!
