Giant Quarter - Casting a Giant Quarter Replica From a 4 Troy Oz Silver Quarter - Silver and Zinc

- I wanted to try and cast a copy of a giant 4 troy ounce silver quarter. I used petrobond sand to make the mold, had some mishaps along the way(as usual) and melted down 10 troy ounces of silver to try and cast the replica in.
I had trouble with the silver after a few attempts, so I ended up just pouring some silver coins. I then melted down some zinc to make the final casting. I hope you enjoy my attempt at casting a giant quarter.

Well done, silver is a mare to cast because the thermal conductivity of silver is 406.0 W/m K whereas zinc is 112..2 W/m K
Hense, silver wicks away it's heat so fast that it's set in the runners before getting to the mold. You would have to make the mould out of something that can be heated or make the sand a lot thinner so the silver has less time to freeze. Love your work, it inspired me to purchase a electric furnace and cast my first .925 silver ingot yesterday.

chasing and casting are two different things, so clearly visible. I don't like copies of coins, but those silver molds were cool, I wonder where to find them. I would also like this for myself

Should have gone for the style points and melted a bunch of pre-1965 silver quarter to harvest the silver for your replica, thus using quarters to make a quarter.
That would have been pretty sweet to do from some Constitutional. Thats about the only type of silver I haven’t added to my silver stack, and a 66’ is probably the lowest year I’ve ever come across in the wild. Maybe it’s time…

You would know much better than I: but, for such a thin cast is possible to have thinner sand molds to lose less material?
Or is that just dangerous and asking for the system to break apart?
I could have done thinner, and I wanted too. I need to make some new flasks though, but I’ve been a little lazy 😬

Have you considered lost-wax caster with plaster? My daughter used to do that with bronze.

I think the issue is how thin those pieces are, I have a few of the 3" novelty coins and tried to cast a couple, but only tend to get the outside, as it's the thickest part.

Fine sift the pertobond that is against the pattern. Then fill it with the non sifted to fill in the rest of the form.
that thin layer of molten silver cools too fast for it to work it seems...

I appreciate that! I’m not going to lie, it makes me smile big time. But I have to say, in learning from BigstackD and loving his work... I’ve learned a lot and created my recipe of 1 of 3 major things to do. Taking something and breaking it all down and just making ingots from it.
Having nothing to breakdown and using stuff I already have to create something.
Or doing both breaking down and creating something in the same process.
I always try to make something, but some weeks a good idea of what to make escapes me, so I just melt something down and make ingots to give a fun experience of it all. Other weeks I get an idea stuck in my head and can’t let it go until I get it right(or at least “okay” 🙂) I love hearing that, but to be honest, I never set out to be better than him, I just wanted to play in his sandbox and do what he was doing so I don’t want to let you down sometime when I just melt a ton of ingots. It would be awesome someday to be invited over for melt. It may not ever happen, but one can hope... You’re awesome Goldie 👍

@@TheGrowingStack BIGSTACK D , Artbyadrock , AlumiTube , PressTube and now you TheGrowingStack are all inspiration to me , i do the same thing i just haven't got into editing video's yet , i have to figure it out one day . PressTube was the first person i seen doing this type of craft then later i seen Kings of Random casting styrofoam i had to try it , and now i have to get into casting 2 part sand molds next. It's only been a 4 month journey so i'm still learning .
There's nothing wrong with melting metal to make ingots , it's just for me personally i don't melt anything down until i have a project in mind , then i melt and pour the project the ingots eventually turn into projects anyway. I understand when you have a TH-cam channel you have to keep up with new content once or twice a month and idea's become limited . i hope to one day experience that i'm working on it .
You can say you like Growing's experiments without coming for Big's belt, lol.
