Awake is perhaps their best album. James have amazing vocal performance on the entire album

My favorite song by the band. Transitions are phenomenal, pace is outstanding. I never tire of hearing it. It's like it just gets better every time.

I can't get enough of this band. Basically all of their albums are a treat.

I'll always miss Kevin Moore's use of metaphors in his lyrics. This song's all about himself and the other bandmates clashing heads. I think it's obvious Petrucci wanted the keys to be much more shreddy and that's why we ended up with Rudess. Either way i still love me some OSI and chroma key so it was all for the best.

Awake is definitely on my top 5 DT albums. Heck, top 3. It's solid and diverse. You deserve a thumbs up just by reacting to this song. The Mirror/Lie should definitely be your next step. Greetings from Chile!

James LaBrie had a serious bout of food poisoning that trashed his throat following this album. He tried to go out and perform despite this and it further damaged his vocal chords. His voice was never the same.

Fun fact: The voice-overs are from a movie version of James Joyce's short story "The Dead."

The old DT. the lyrics far more
    poetic and
philosophical than the DT after Kevin Moore left (well there's John Myung who's still gives us meaningful lyrics)

This album and "Images and Words" are the two DT albums that I feel resemble each other the most. However, while I think "Images" is a better album song by song, "Awake" is a better album when taken as a complete work. The center section of the album ("Erotomania" leading into "The Silent Man") is a thing of beauty, and in my opinion is the highlight of the album. The "meaty" aspect you commented on is probably due in large part to this album being the first time Petrucci used a 7-string to record with (An Ibanez Jem, BTW).

Have you listened "Metropolis pt. 1"? It must be their most popular song. Also, that reminds me of this article I read some time ago about great modern prog songs, perhaps you can try a few.
