- The post & video I did about the pruning of a Weeping Pussy Willow has been surprisingly popular, to myself anyway, so I decided it was time to share everything I know about caring for this small weeping tree.

My client up in the San Francisco Bay Area ordered the 1 you see in the video from Wayside Gardens about 15 years ago which I planted & then maintained. It’s not a plant commonly sold in those parts so I was very curious to see how it would do.
Although there were quite a few Pussy Willows growing around the pond on my childhood farm in New England, I didn’t even know there was a weeping variety. Many times gardening is experimentation and I love weeping plants so I said “why not give it a go” - you know what I mean?
In short, the Weeping Pussy Willow tree of which I speak has been lovingly nicknamed “Cousin Itt” & is doing just fine! It has grown in width more than in height and turns into a massively foliated blob if not pruned a few times a year in our temperate coastal California climate. These plants are tough & are actually pretty easy to maintain. And yes, when now left unpruned, Itt turns into the leafy version of the amusing character from the Addams Family.

I just planted one in my Boise, Idaho garden this morning. In my search for planting and care tips, I came across your video and blog. Very informative. I'm a gardening newbie but now more comfortable with the task of nurturing this beautiful addition because of you. Thanks a million!
I've never pruned mine. It is healthy, green, dense and grows vigorously every year. It has nearly a perfect dome shape with a straight, flat bottom.
The secret? Deer love munching on the low growing shoots, keeping the bottom flat. The upper part has grown beautifully.
Just had 4 of these trees delivered to my garden. Really looking forward to placing them. Have called them The Apostles. Enjoyed your video, good information. Thank you.
My tree currently looks like a blob so watching your video was very helpful. I'm going to tackle pruning it very soon.
Thank you this really helped me take care of our cousin “it”👍
what a beautiful tree! i never saw a willow like that!!
@Jason Yang and willy I mean willow
Glad this video was available. I haven't ever seen the actual pussy willow tree (or bush?) before... I've only seen the branches of pussy willow branches in flower shops and craft stores.
I have missed the pruning time. The branches has filled out with foliage. Do I need to wait until it has the fuzzy pods before I prune?
Such a BEAUTIFUL tree and its a gorgeous shape :-) thanks so much for sharing Nell and sending tons of love and happiness from Ireland for a fantastic day XXXXXX
Yes +Desert Plants of Avalon Cousin Itt is a beauty, especially when pruned out! Hugs from Cali, Nell
How do you graft a weeping pussywillow
Love your style - I often use terms like "blob" to describe plants as well lol new subscriber here! 🙂 Looking forward to learning more!
I live in Oklahoma and I just bought one and we just planted it it is March 14th
Should I prune any limbs at the crown that are rubbing? Is there any worry about the tree being wounded by limbs rubbing closely to the crown? Zone 8b
Hi Nell, I have this exact tree/shrub. I saved it from going to the landfill about 5 years ago and it’s been doing really well. However, the stalk is still really skinny. I’ve had to stake it securely so that it doesn’t break in heavy winds as the top is getting large (both in structure and branches) although I do prune 2-3 times a year. This winter, we had a very heavy overnight snowfall and when I got up in the morning, the top of the plant was almost at ground level. Thankfully, it didn’t break and I carefully put it back upright and made sure it is now staked in every direction. My question is why isn’t the stalk growing in proportion to the top, which has a big, beautiful curly structure with branches coming off of it. Any assistance would be appreciated very much. I was hoping I could remove the stakes at some point, but after what just happened, I’m not sure this plant will ever be able to be free of stakes. Your thoughts and insight would be welcomed
Very helpful. Great explanation
Great Dee - glad you found it useful. Nell
Mine is suddenly growing branches at the top that are sticking straight up and not folding over!!! How do I fix it?
Mine too! I wonder if they will fall once they get a certain size
Love your videos! more videos on succulents please

+Marilou Almanoche Love succulents too!
I used to live near there. Your area looks like Mill Valley.
very helpful....nice video
Hi, I have just planted my first willow tree, could you tell me pls when do I have to prune it for the very first time. At the moment some branches are already touching the ground. Shall I leave them like that for now? Appreciate your advice, thank you
Hi - You want to give it the first pruning after it flowers; the timing will depend on your climate zone. I always prune the branches of this plant a few inches up off the ground because I like that look. Nell
My tree is 3 yrs old and doesn't bloom very well. I think it might not get enough sun. Can i still transplant it to a different location?
When should I prune our 3 foot tree?
In Boston,MA
+Dennis “DDietr” Dietrich The best time to prune them is just after flowering. These plants are really tough & respond well to pruning. I'm not sure how old your plant is, but I'd give it at least 6-12 months to establish before pruning. Nell
are the roots invasive-- not to plant near a house ????
My sister wants to prune her tree so the willows are not even ,but much shorter. Not sure how to accomplish that. Also what is the rule to cutting the main stems so parts don't reach out of shape as opposed to the willowing.
Hi - She can prune them shorter but will need to thin out those lateral branches. Take them all the wall out or back to a main branch. Nell
Has anyone grown this tree in a large pot? I'm zone 5 and have one in a large clay pot. My questions are whether I should being the pot into the garage for winter and should I fertilize it since it's in a pot? Sometimes throughout the summer the leaves turned a little yellow and would drop. It gets full afternoon sun.
Ifrom my research, they say they will die if left in contsiners over winter.
What can we do our willow has rust bug on the leaves
💙🌍💪🏿🙏🏿
Doesnt grow below the graft???
Mine is like 2 ft tall!! And has a huge afro.
how do you propagate a weeping willow tree....
I have two pussy willows which were scalded by the sun last year and all the branches have died but it is now got shoots growing around its base what should I do ?
Can I plant it three feet away from the house?
I'd give it more room to grow - the crowns really spread. Nell
That NAME 😂😂
Hi, I have a 3 years salix caprea pendula(pussy willow), last spring I have prunned it for the first time and I did it very shortly, 20-25 cm to the body, all brunches. Now it looks nice, the three is 1,5 m high, and the branches are about 30-40 cm close to the ground. allready has green leaves. Should I prunn it again? Thank you!
You can if you'd like. I prune the 1 you see in the video 2-3 times a year but it's in a temperate climate. Nell
MEAW
I want a SMALLER weeping willow, perhaps half or a little less than a real grown up tree. I don't want a silly midget like that. Any suggestions of varieties? This is for a small downtown so it can't get enormous like a full grown adult weeping willow. thanks.
Blast cool a c
I can’t believe that’s the name of the plant 🤣 say it slowly and you’ll see why it’s funny
