When my mom moved to a new house in the late 70s we had a weeping willow in the back yard. it actually sat in a low section of the yard that would develop a pretty large puddle in the Spring when the snow thawed. We (actually I usually lol) had to gather up a lot of sticks the dropped from it, but it was beautiful looking. We moved in the late 90s and the new owners removed it because they didn't like the clean up
Me and my two oldest daughters planted one at my mother in-laws house . A storm came by an knocked two big limbs off . I grabbed them two bad boys and put them in a bucket of water for 25 days and it grew beautiful pink roots . Ready for the dirt.
My two oldest daughters and I....

what a great short and to the point video!
I love weeping willow trees! They have been one of my favorites trees for years! With a weeping willow tree, you can also use their branches to make a natural rooting agent! Simply cut a branch into small pieces about the size of your pinky finger. Soak the cut pieces in hot to warm water for 24 hour. The fluid left over acts as a rooting agent, also it's probably a decent fertilizer, and I saw this because I have helped dying plants and broken plants! Simply take a cutting of nearly any plant, cut any damage off using a sharp pair of scissors, dip into the willow fluid made from soaking willow branch pieces and wallah! A willow tree is a beautiful tree with many uses! Great tree!
And they are poisonous
What about Wisconsin willow trees? I just bought one today. Now I am worried it will get too big, can I trim it and keep it short? Will it hurt it?
@@carrasco2011sc my recommendation would be to contact a botanist or your local garden center and ask them! My oppinion would say they need a decent amount of room but that's just my oppinion! However I hear that a willow requires 50 to 80 feet for the roots and that they can grow up to 50 feet tall! That said if you can manage to get one growing perhaps on the outer edge of your property but I would say at least 25 to 30 feet away and preferably as far from your plumbing, septic, and drain lines! They now have dwarf versions out perhaps you could return and ask for a dwarf version if your yard isnt large enough! I can tell you this though, I wish I had one! I'm now wondering if the roots can shoot out 50 feet does that mean 50 foot radius so 25 ft each way from the tree! Everything I see says keep 50 feet away but my thought is 25 feet each direction from the center of the tree but I'm no Botanist!
@@carrasco2011sc Good luck and I hope it works out for you if not try a dwarf breed !
@@ericmcginnis9413 Oh. Okay. The label says 30 ft of space I guess this one isn't going to get too big.
I have the pleasure of having one at the bottom of my garden it brings me alot of joy also its in a marshy area that can flood the amount of water the tree sucks up saves my garden and home from flooding.
Thanks for this video. I have twin girls and when I asked what they wanted for Christmas they said a Willow tree. Your video was very helpful. ☺
This was an EXTREMELY helpful, comprehensive and succinct presentation! Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge!
We have a weeping willow in our yard and have noticed, plus we looked into the fact that it’s the last tree of the season to drop its leaves in early winter and the first tree to bud out again in late winter right before early spring. Keeps its leaves longer than any other tree.
interesting. We have very few around here so I would not have known that.
My favorite tree. Cant wait to plant one now, Thanks!
Valuable info!! Just got one on clearance for $15. Gonna give it a good home. Thank you! 🌳
Thank you very much for the video, I just planted mine and was worried about the leaves. I am now relieved that this happens due to the roots not being able to keep up yet, I will prune the branches now.
My favorite tree, hands down! Been wanting to plant one for awhile... thanks so much for the tips!
Weeping willows grow well in zone 4 & 3 I live in Wisconsin and we have TONS of them here 2 out of the 4 houses I lived in had them out the window
I love these trees
It is medicinal properties such as aspirin and can make basket out of the branches that long and thin
Weeping willows are apart of my sister and I childhood. We used to try to swing on them 😂😂
We get the giant willow aphid new to our country which doesn’t kill the tree but then attracts a lot of wasps. So unsure if you have it there but something to be aware of if you have kids nearby. Also some of them self seed easily. But I’m saying that we’re happily growing one in the right spot… it looks great in the landscape!
We planted a globe and weeping willow yesterday. Just stopped by to make sure we didn’t plant them to close to the house. An online search said at least 50’ away from any structure or underground utilities.
I have a weeping willow in my backyard that is 120 feet tall it’s 10 feet around diameter so they can get huge!
They will grow in zone 4 also
I got this in fish pond fish's love the eat roots also looks beautiful
I remembered playing with its branches... Making crowns with it..!
We used them as whips -- of course we weren't mean with them. I remember as a small boy standing in them and spinning around with all the branches raining down on me. I will never forget that. There was a rock under it and I picked it up and there was bunch of ladybugs under it. Such a pity that enormous tree got blown down in a hurricane (1977?). If they planted another one then, it would be almost full sized by now. That was 43-ish years ago.
Thank you for the excellent information.
We have a young weeping willow. It has not been pruned. Will do this winter. Is there any way to encourage growth on the side that has no branches?
Are willows a problem around PVC sewers, or just porous older lines? Also, can the roots get into a modern concrete block basement? If I chose to plant near my house, what would a fairly safe distance be? Finally, where can I purchase a beautifully pruned tree like in the video, with shipping to PA?
Okay I just got a good deal on a willow and my goal for it is to keep it small as a shaded tree for a chair on my patio. I have read up on it and now I am concerned after reading that it is a huge growing tree. My neighbor has one that is planted in ground but stays small. If I keep pruning it every year will it stay consistent at a manageable size.
How far away from a french drain should a weeping willow be?
Hi I was wondering my 2 year old baby willow is yellowing, I put white rocks (the bright shinny ones) on the ring around it instead of mulch could that be the reason or is it because I water it every day?
Do you have to stake it?
Will it straight up on it's own. I have one that is
Over 15 feet but the top is curving over.
How old is this tree? I planted a 6 foot willow last year in June and the trunk is about as thick as my middle finger. The tree looks healthy and this year I noticed that the green of the trunk is starting to fade so I'm really looking forward to that wooden trunk. The tree is now between 8 and 9 feet tall. When will the trunk start to thicken?
That was my big question -- drought tolerant. They naturally grow along rivers; don't they? I want to put one in an small town downtown area off of Main Street. I think it would be fabulous there. We have no other trees remotely like that downtown. The dirt there is terrible so I don't think it will get full sized but just the same perhaps there are some smaller varieties we can purchase to make sure it doesn't become a problem.
Great advice and very informative. Thank you!
I love tour videos! Your the best!
I have a yard that tends to hold a lot of water would this tree be a great add to put in for all the excessive water we have? We're just looking for a tree or bush to help with all the water
Do you have a recommendation for how far away from water lines it needs to be?
If I have a sandy type soil, and no natural water sources in my property to plant near, will this tree still do ok?
I have a thriving young weeping willow that’s about 3 years old. I planted it in my front yard and spaced it far enough away from the house, allowing full growth without being too close or too far away. The problem is, no one educated me on how the roots kinda run across the ground and grow like Bermuda grass, if you will. Over time I think the roots will destroy my sidewalk. My question is, how likely is it that the tree will survive if I have a spade truck come in and move it? I have 3.5 acres of nothing grass and this tree will be beautiful, no matter where I put it. Looking forward to your response. Thanks.
My weeping willow is just a few years old and it has like a green fungus or something on the bark. What is that and how can I get rid of it?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. There is spot next to my house what tree do you recommend to plant?
I live in San Diego County. Not sure what zone that is. I've only seen one weeping willow in my town. It is beautiful. I have 1/2 acre so a lot of area for this tree. How often does a grown weeping willow need any professional pruning, if at all? Thanks.
We We have a young weeping willow about a year old. It did not get enough water at the beginning and all the branches at the top are brown.... since watering more frequently, it has come back for the most part except the top. Should I cut the whole top off or wait to see what comes back next year and then trim the top off if it’s still dead?
Very useful info like always. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I bought a weeping willow 6 months ago and it hasn't grown at all not even a extra limb or leaf. I live in florida which means it has been hot and rainy. What is a good fertilizer can I use ? If you could supply a name of a good fertilizer or soil to add to it , I would greatly appreciate it.
Hi Jim, can you plant a Weeping willow at the edge of a forest? I dug a hole and found an underground spring, but I'm not sure it'll get enough sun surrounded on one side by tall, mature trees.
What kind of soil can i use to plant my sprouted branch?
ive read to soak the tree before planting, is that true?
Great video. I believe my young willow is too top heavy. When I remove the stakes holding it up, it leans so much to one side or the other that I'm afraid it will damage the trunk. Is pruning it (in mid may) the answer? Also, I have accidentally let the mulch pile up around the base. When I raked it back, I noticed little roots starting to grow above ground (where the mulch was). Should I do anything beyond raking back the mulch? Thanks!
I bought and planted a willow and the leaves are turning yellow ??? Suggestions appreciated
I just orderd some weeping willow trees, I'm excited to see them grow,I've order before ,but they died !I have them in water right now. what kind of soil can I use?
I would like to plant a white weeping willow near the canal that is in our backyard. How close can I plant it to the water? I love weeping willows plus I need my bank secured so I thought of this tree. I'm very happy to hear it grows so fast! 👍👍 I would like it to hang a bit over the canal but cannot block the canoers, kayakers and Paddle boarders!! Also we flood once every 5+ years. We flooded this past summer and the tree that was growing out of the bank fell. I'm hoping the big one there won't fall. Yet another reason to plan another asap!
Do you think this spot I marked on #2 is a good place? Also what about the flooding? Thanks in advance.
Can I get an email or some place to show you my photos?
Very helpful
So I have three ranging in years from 1 to 4. The two oldest have some pronounced leaning. Can I trim/top them to encourage growth on the side opposite the lean? Can I do it this time of year (July/Aug)? Thanks for such a great & straight ahead video!
Will it grow at a temperature of 20 - 30 degree Celsius.....
I would love to see you do a video maybe about selectively pruning an ornamental tree especially a weeping one or a video about weeping purple Beech
All the trees I have put in will need some pruning. I will show it when I do it.
Do you ever train a tree yourself into a weeping habit?
How old is this tree in this video?
Loved the video!
I’m looking to plant 10’ Australian willows in a flood plane for habitat restoration (waterfowl). The area will be flooded from Nov 1 to March 1. Will my 2 year old (but freshly planted) willow survive?
I have a weeping willow that is about 30 feet and it was not properly pruned while it grew and it is just crazy, we just moved in this new house and i would like to know how i can prue it to help it out alittle.
Hello ah I have a Australian, dragon, and one like the in the video weeping willows, they are rooting now I just need to know what's the best soil to use on my trees?
Do I need to stake my willow? Loved the tip on pruning!
What makes the leaves turn brown we live in texas and get a lot of hard wind every day and hot weather. What can I do? I water every 3 days.
Try more water? Put a layer of heavy compost and cover the ground to keep moisture in, either yard clippings, mulch, cardboard that's very wet topped with leaves or grass etc. Just don't mulch up close to the bark. 🍁🌱🌲🌳🌿🌼🌻🙂👍❤️🙏💜
Do they need a dormant period? I live in a perpetually growing area, where there’s no cold winter. Can they grow throughout the year?
Brought a willow tree last year and old branches not grown any leaves but base keeps getting plenty I'm not sure what to do
I want to grow one in my backyard but I know it’s a bad idea 🤠 haha. Right?
My 12 foot weeping willow is floppy unless I stake it up
I’m so disappointed
Why is it doing that?
Please help
Can I plant this near a pond
Park stones around your house, at the foundation on the root of the tree will turn around and go somewhere else
this tree is amazin
How much water does it consume
Is it a good idea to plant one about 10-15 feet away from your house? And what time of the year is the best to plant one?
Thanks!
No way! I have one that is 17 years old and it is around 40 feet tall and 40 feet wide and it was pruned back last year! I have to have a tree arborist come this week to take it in so it doesn’t get in the neighbors yard. It will crack your foundation if too close.
We have one in the "feeld" a store to her house and when my mom moved in to the house is humongous and then someone came and chopped a piece off of it that sprouted another piece then chopped off the other one and then another one started growing so now it just looks like a Truffula Tree
Jim ? I live in an area where my soil doesn't perk or drain well I'm having to pump my septic out three times every winter and was thinking about planting one of these trees just far enough away from the house and septic lines but close enough to dry out my crazy wet yard what is your opinion on this and i heard that these wonderful trees drink a lot of water how much cause I may need several
I'm curious if you tried this and if so did it work? My friend has the same issue and I'd love to tell her if this is a solution. Thank you. 😊
My weeping willow isn’t weeping, is that because it’s under 2-years old?
My Three year old willow tree fell over. How to keep it alive until I get help to lift it😢
I planted 3 30 dollar weeping willows way too close together in a triangle just to see what happens, hopefully they'll grow into each other, right now they look like an all girl singing group so I call them Destiny's Child lol
How's that going
@@David-wc5wr Topped them in the spring, never want them to get bigger than I can reach with a ladder. They're beautiful, definitely a feature, like fountains.
@@dabigdikdangler o so definitely easy to keep smaller? Do they dense up ?
@@David-wc5wr They grow fast but so far it hasn't been a problem. I cut the tops as well as underneath to keep the fountain shape I want and their pole like trunks clear. The hard part was making them perfectly straight with fishing line and lawn pins so you couldn't see the support. Now they don't need it.
My weeping willow has a branch that is the same size as it's trunk. Should I cut the large branch?
Help....We just planted the weeping willow here in Sacramento, CA. It was early June, now leaves are falling , some branches turned black, scared that it is dying.....what can I do ?
I have a willow that is about 6' tall, a couple three years old or so. I pruned it after planting last year. My son hit it with a football and broke two branches off one side. Can i grapht one or two in there place to keep that side of the tree full? Thanks much too anyone who knows.
Hi, I just subscribed. A question about my willow tree if you dont mind. It has been planted for just over a year. It actually virtually died last winter but has come back to life and had a growth spurt. The branches are touching the ground. There is barely any trunk without a branch coming off it. The tree is about 4ft tall. Do you think I should lightly prune it or cut some branches off or just leave it alone. I look forward to your reply
Wow cool 👍
So, they would thrive in South West Florida? It gets pretty hot, unbearable hot. Thanks!
At what altitude (higes) it can grow?
I found that one types of willow tree named Betula utilitis which grow at the elevation of 4,500m.
Can you keep a willow tree in a 30 gallon pot?
*I got a prairie cascade willow, and had him planted in the ground last year - now I see lots of branches are growing from the trunk near to the ground - should I cut these off shoots?*
Yes
Is it ok to plant these in the fall zone 6B?
Love your videos. 😍
+Tip of South Texas Lifestyle Thanks for watching
All my life I always wanted nothing more than a weeping willow whenever I bought my first house. Well, I bought my house 3 years ago and put an order in for a weeping willow at the local nursery. As I waited for it to come, I began to do research on the tree so I'd know how to care for it. As it turns out (and as you clearly explained in the video) they cannot be planted near your house and sewer lines because of the way the roots spread out looking for water. I was incredibly bummed. Now, whenever I drive around the city and see people with willows on their small front lawns, I think to myself, "Is there a way to plants these trees within 15 ft of a house that I'm not aware of? Is there some sort of method that can be used to keep the roots from doing damage?" The only thing I could think of is maybe pouring a concrete wall around the tree several feet deep (of course it would not have a floor and the roots could run deep as they wanted). But, that would be a lot of trouble to go through just to have a weeping willow.
You would need some sort of underground fence on that side. I probably wouldn't risk it, but they certainly are beautiful when they get big.
They have root barriers. Try that. I think I may get some as well. My tree is about 30 feet from my home.
In my experience with gardening around trees I've learned that roots actually seek out walls/barrier above/in the ground. When it rains, the water condenses and runs down the walls of the garden, making those areas wetter which in turn attracts tree roots. I've dug out sooo many roots over the years and they follow my border walls.
Imo barriers are also impractical because they degrade so easily in the dirt
Jim - Thanks for the video as we are looking to plant a weeping willow. Any recommendations on the best time of year. Also have a corner of our yard that we are considering. How far away should be plant from our fence? And, how far away from other trees? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Autumn is best time of year to plant
We ordered a weeping willow from the Arbor Day Foundation and they said that spring is fine to plant it.
Can it be grown in India
Thank you!
Can you keep a weeping willow in a pot?
Pode mim dizer se tem outro nome pra essa árvore lindo
Hello i want to buy 2 weeping cherry tree, but i live in zone 8b. Will they be ok in full sun in texas where i live or should i do shade?
my moms always wanted one, now that we just got some acres I think we should get a bunch. I was under the impression they were difficult and needed to be near a ground water source. With that in mind is near a natural creek a good place to put them?
Congratulations on your land! ❤Just be careful that you won't need that water cause it'll drink it up!
How do you prune a dying willow in hopes that it comes back?
Thank you
Hi Jim. Is it a good idea to plant this tree right next to the swimming pool. I heard its root is pretty aggresive. Will it damage the swimming pool wall etc.? Thx
The roots are bad, but the leaves are worse. They would be in the pool constantly.
@@JimPutnam okay.... thanks for confirming it... will stay away from this tree then for my swimming pool
ugh that sucks bc it would look majestic over a pool
I'm ordering one in 14 days for a gift how can I take care of it during the winter its 5 to 6 "
Do I plant it in the winter?
I want one of those
I have two landscapes I care for that have weeping willows. One is in a neighboring lawn nearly a foot in diameter with large limbs over the street and neighbors driveway. The other in a back lawn in an expensive neighborhood and a complete nuisance. IMHO the only good place for a full size variety would be on a farm pond. I would never plant on a residential lot of any size.
+Herman Beach Lots have really changed over the years.
Thats why he stated to make sure you have the proper amount of space to grow them
Would you say it's ok to prune a young willow this time of year, June? It's young, about 10ft tall and been in the ground about a month. Cheers, Chris.
How is yours doing. I just brought one that I want to keep at a short height.
- are there different types of weeping willow tree's?
+rickster348 There is a gold foliage cultivar and probably even more varieties that I'm not familiar with.
- ok, Thanks.
Thanks again!! I appreciate you
