    I don’t think I explained my driving strategy for testing enough in this video so hope this clarifies:
    Strategy 1: Rip it to drain the battery low and try and find a 350kW charger to see big charging speeds
    Strategy 2: Normal driving into Grand Junction to simulate how a normal person would cruise with wide open roads
    Strategy 3: Gentler cruising over the Rockies getting the highest efficiency of the trip

    We don’t have access to serious EA help. I have been stuck innumerable times trying to get a charge at Electrify America. It actually pushed me away from electric cars for long distance use and as of over 1 year ago I no longer take electric road trips. I’m glad you document the issues, because I have posted about this online and been called a FUD spreader by the Electrify America Stans. I invested almost $100k in a luxury car, had awful charging experiences, and been called a liar for documenting it. So freaking frustrating.

    Yesterday I typed Lucid into my search on TH-cam. Watched 2 of your videos then went for a walk this morning…and I’m staying in Palm Springs! I see the driveway where your trip began (across the street is the home with all the plant canopies). Small world! Thank you for your video. The electrify America network needs some help. I was thinking you were about to be stranded out there. Glad you made it back to Colorado. I’ll be watching more of your videos!

  • @newscoulomb3705
    @newscoulomb3705 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    25:35 Honestly, I don't think there's much to optimize with trips in the Lucid. With easily 400 to 450 miles of minimum driving range, most people will just drive it like a gas car. A couple of 10 to 15 minute stops at a convenience store would be more than enough to drive 800+ miles in a day, which is more than most people would ever consider driving. The bigger factor is being able to find and identify faster chargers that are located conveniently for the trip.

      1 year of owning an EV is all i could muster. There are so many issues with none working chargers, shitty apps, charging queues and not many DC chargers in general. The insane price of electricity currently did not help, sold it and went back to our diesel machine.

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TB-xv7rn While EA's reliability isn't the greatest, it's nowhere near as bad as some claim. The bigger issue is how crowded these sites have become, so even a single charger going down is a much bigger issue. The thing about the Lucid Air is that, even arriving with 10% battery, you could typically make it to another charging site if all of the chargers are down or in use.

      @Jordon Manwaring Tesla are nice, but if you see how they are made, they have serious issues!! Just as Ford did when they were new. There is always room for improvement. If Lucid can fix some small issues, it will overtake tesla. BTW, the lucid engineer is the SAME guy WHO designed the Tesla Model S!! Don't underestimate Lucid like people underestimated Tesla in the beginning!

  • @Miata822

    Road tripping in my Air GT I target arriving at under 10% and unplugging at about 50%. Driving at a more modest pace, that gives me an easy two hour driving stint between 10-15 minute stops. I don't bother with preconditioning and, of course, it's easy to charge a little more where chargers are sparse.
    When younger I would press on regardless, driving hours on end, but have found that stretching my legs every couple hours keeps my mind in the game on the highway and I arrive at my destination in functional condition. Since I would be stopping anyway, I find the Lucid has usually charged past my target by the time I find the bio-break facilities and buy a drink or whatever.
    Travelling in a Lucid today also means allowing a little time to talk to the gawkers.

      Kyle likes his histrionics.... I have yet to meet a DC fast charger that didnt work for me. Not all of them have been a seamless expirience of plug play and go but I have gotten them to work every time with some minor fuss. Of late they have all worked plug and charge with zero hiccups. You simply have to be prepared. Credit card, check, RFID card, check, App, check. Simply the state of charging for now. For me, the initial issues were from Mercedes itself it took them a while to get the car registered into the networks. Again these are teething issues. Which are getting progressively worked out.

    1:01:21 Sadly, these double activations are probably the #1 issue with Electrify America's reliability. It's connected to everything from FordPass issues to why some people have problems activating the charger with an app after they've plugged in (they don't wait for the handshake to complete). I know a number of your viewers jump on the CCS standard or the public charging infrastructure as a whole for being the culprit, but in my experience, this is all on Electrify America (and partly on the automakers who have attempted ISO plug and charge). As people start to get more experience with faster, non-Electrify America chargers, they might start to change their perceptions a bit.

    Reminds me of the 1970s gas crisis. Spending an hour trying to get the gas cap off after standing in a long line realizing that you had to put a locking gas cap on to keep people from stealing gas and not bringing the key. When you finally got the cap off you remember that your license plate has the wrong digit for gas today.

    20:20: I have a BMW I4, there is usually a curve to the charge on my car. It states I can get 200 kw and I have when it preps, but generally only for about the first minute, then it goes down to 160 or so, till about 40% then it goes to 120, and so on till it levels around 80kW. 29:50 This is what you can expect of Electrify America, (EA) 1/10 th of the time in my experience. Call the 800 number, they may answer in an hour. 59:00 Yep more EA errors. Car may be amazing, EA will throw cold water on that with figuring out plugging in and charging will work. 1:05:10 Nice. I was towing with my Rivian, and the first station was the only one I could park at and reach without disconnecting the trailer. So of course I had to disconnect the trailer to pull into a different stall to charge. But another Rivian pulled up as I was doing it - they had just finished a day of offroading.

Free charging doesn’t help if you can’t charge at all, a couple was 350 miles away and had 20 miles left, they left to find the nearest EVGO station. What bothered me is EA confirmed station 4 Brixmor North Haven Ct was available, along with others and I had reported the same station 48 hours earlier, after wasting an hour without charging, they confirmed only one station would be available.

      There’s not enough critical mass of EVs to be profitable. And the manufacturers would have to collaborate to make a standard form factor and connector interface. This would go a long way toward reducing concerns for people about long term battery degradation to swap out your battery a few times on road trips.

    Easier to take & put heavy item in the trunk.
    You don't have to lift their weight as much in a trunk with a regular height in the back wall,.

    What about the software to I’m very interested to see if it will show me how much charge I have left where I am going to charge the two or three they expect me to charge at I want to know if it is as good as Tesla. We must be able to map out are charging maps we must and for what they’re asking for that car I expect it to be easy to handle the charging situation when we’re going across country from Sacramento to Sebastian Florida I don’t want any problems finding a charge station

    Love the review, well done. Now, considering your issues getting the EV charger to even function, and given that you're one of the most experienced, knowledgeable EV operators in the country and still had major issues-when I get an EV it will be a Tesla, just for a reliable charging network. I've watched your other videos with similar issues-IMO CCS not ready for prime time.

    Great video, I was seriously looking at getting one of these vehicles this video makes it clear that they're not ready yet, I don't understand all the hype? I can't imagine doing an on-road business trip, or trip with my family at about 4 or 500 miles with all the stops and long charges?? Plus this vehicle still needs a lot of updating. also it's amazing how many things you start making the norm trying to accommodate the lacking of the car, under 5% climate control shuts down?! It's a hot summer day in your climates control shuts down because you're under 5% and that's okay? It's a super cold winter day and your heat shuts down?

  • @TheCamper83

    Enjoying the coverage of the Lucid! Please be careful when someone asks you about the car when they're from other states (Alabama). If you laugh when they tell you where they're from, that laugh with a comment like "I don't think there's going to be many Lucids in Alabama", well it just comes off as snobbish.
    Also there's one area that reviewers never seem to address which is battery degradation and replacement costs. Although many will never need to replace their battery, it's environmentally responsible to keep a car for a long time (less CO2 to make a new car). That said replacement costs should always be lower on ubiquitous vehicles like Tesla. With high numbers of older Tesla's they will undoubtedly be in higher supply effectively dropping prices especially for used batteries out of wrecked vehicles.

      Don't look too close, it will take at least 10 years for something like that to ve even remotely "affordable" I guess a Model 3 LR will be the closest you will get with about 300, 350+ miles for about 45000$

      @@marcusbiller867 well that’s ok, planning to try to keep my 2.5 year old M3LR for 8 to 10 years. We will see, haven’t owned a car longer than 3 years. If any car has a chance for me owning it through its 8 year warranty. It’s the 2021 Tesla.

    I love what Lucid is doing . The car ALMOST looks perfect . My one negative thought is the lack of single tone paint or better options to match the roof and body more to my taste . I know the TWO TONE style they use is PROPER BRITISH UPPER CLASS adopted by Americans but even most brits don't like that style 🤣
    Other than that I LOVE ... ABSOLUTELY LOOOOVE THIS CAR . I have been looking at EVs and before the Lucid it was the NIO that I really preferred , styling wise .

    The Lucid is more money than I’d ever be willing to spend on a car, but it is still a beautiful car. Bugs and issues are to be expected on any vehicle from any start up, but hopefully they’ll be a little faster to resolve them than Tesla (who is still having significant build quality issues on cars that have been in production for 5 years or more).
    EA has been dreadful for the past few months. I’ve noticed many stations are on “free play” mode and have been for a while, which I have to imagine is because they know that their stations are really bad right now. It’s too bad, because they were doing really well for about 6 months at the end of 2021/beginning of 2022. I’ve had so many activation issues on EA while in free play mode, which my Ioniq5 had no issue with prior to them switching to free play.
    The manual preconditioning doesn’t bother me, but mainly that’s because my Bolt and Ioniq5 don’t (currently) have preconditioning at all. It would be nice if it would just start preconditioning when the nav shows you will arrive at a charger in 20 minutes, but having the ability to tell it to heat/cool the battery is nice.
