It also just occurred to me about the failed assassination attempt after the announcement event…… I absolutely wouldn’t put it past Wade to have arranged it himself, as a controlled event he could be (mostly) certain wouldn’t kill Saul to help “encourage” him to accept protection. If Saul just insisted on wandering around unprotected he’d be very open to attempts by SanTi supporters to influence him, or kill him. This attempt (and the blind fanaticism of the sniper) instantly made the reality of needing protection impossible for Saul to refuse. I don’t think it’s the most likely thing but it seems like 100% the kind of thing Wade would do.
"If we can save them, they won't need to conquer us" ohhh you sweet summer child... keep that hopefulness and I'll keep pondering Fermi's paradox while I hide in my basement 😂 Thank you for reacting to this show, it was fun ❤
I agree with your qualms regarding the Boat plan, but plane crashes that are basically disintegrated still have flight data recorders that are recovered from crash sites. Not saying what was on the boat is equivalent, but some plane crash sites don't look like anything should be recoverable.
I read the book and while I do remember that they use the nano threads on the boat in the book as well, I just cannot remember any of the details cause I read it back when it came out. From just the show, it feels like the outcome of the use of this nanotechnology doesn’t seem at all to justify having to create the idea and work it into the story in the first place. It almost gives the sense of he was finishing up the book and thought “oh I forgot to include nano technology” and shoved it in there. Once again though, that’s just what I’m getting from the show. I can’t remember if it made more sense in the book.
The nano tech is mentioned in the next books. It was used to build the space elevator that CX takes to go meet YT (among other uses) in the third book.
If you look up "Necessary Evil" in the dictionary, you'll find a picture of Wade. Necessary evils are still evil though, and I personally think we should reject them. I'm at the end of the third book and some stuff that happens there kind of upset me a bit. I feel like the author is saying necessary evil is actually a good thing sometimes.... I dunno, it's not clear to me. It's definitely a theme of the book and Wade is one side of it, and Jin Cheng is the other side of it.
Given what the author has said about the Uyghur genocide, it's possible his own moral compass is just not up to the task of correctly adjudicating the gnarly moral dilemmas he's created. Though (1) I try to give the benefit of the doubt to people living under authoritarian regimes where it's difficult to get to the truth of hot political topics on your own, and (2) I think there's a textual case to be made that Liu is not really on the side of people like Wade. Enjoy the rest of the story, it keeps getting trippier!
You are not supposed to like Wade. It’s a little disturbing so many people (book fans) see him as the “hero”. Maybe that’s why the show went out of their way to have him kill a bunch of kids early on😂
How many people wholeheartedly support Eren Yeager while hating on gabi and don't recognize how stupidly hypocritical and ironic that is or don't think light yagami is pure evil? People are dumb.
I don't see Wade as a hero. However, I do see him as realistic. I don't think people in positions of power spend a nanosecond thinking about the children they kill. They already rationalized it long before being given that sort of authority. They don't care about individual people at all. They care about causes.
Minor details from the book that the show skips over. The 8-episode season format is ridiculous. The alien worshipping cult is called ETO, the Earth-Trisolaris Organization, the Trisolaris was what the book and the Chinese drama called the aliens' home planet. In the spirit of that, the Netflix version could be called ESO, the Earth Santi Organization. There were 3 factions in the cult. The Redemptionists- who worshipped the aliens as gods and wanted to solve the Three Body Problem for them for co-existence. The Adventist- who didn't really worship the aliens, but hated human beings so much they believe the human race should be exterminated for the good of the Earth. And the Survivors- who wants to get perks for helping the conquest of Earth by their new Alien overlords. The book and the Chinese Drama devotes a lot of time on them. The Netflix show just combines them into one big group represented by the crazy cult lady. I blame the 8-episode limit. Finally, the Sophons don't have an omnipotent grasp on technology. They can't actually hack stuff in the books. They can interfere with human vision and mess with advanced physics experiments, and obviously spy on stuff, but that's it. It's actually hackers and other members of the Alien worshiping cult doing the leg work for them. The Sophons just give them the cheat codes and passwords acquired by their spying capability to get around the firewalls and security features. Not sure if this is still the case here for the Netflix show.
The UN Secretary General did give his qualifications when she announced Saul. She said he was a physicist who trained with the brightest minds or something like that.
I think Saul has always felt different and separate from other ppl, that's why he spends so much time high and why he pretended not to remember Nora's name. He wants the distractions not the connection, or failed connections, and this will only be multiplied x100 by him becoming the Wallfacer.
In the books we never "see" the plan of any wallfacer in their head. The book 2 storyline is perfect for television. Everything is explained through events, dialogs and actions of the wallfacers.
I agree. I don't think we're supposed to like Wade but to understand his character. He may not have a high morality, unethical, some other may consider him the devil but I think he's the kind of devil we need exactly in this type of situation. In order for humanity to succeed and depend itself. "Someone has to do the dirty work". I am reading the 3rd book right now, man I hate him but I understand the need of him for humanity's survival.
As a book reader, I enjoy hearing non-readers say "this season is so mind bending!". I'll smile and tell them, you'll have to rebuilt your definition of mind-bending in Season 2, and likely you need to repeat it several times in Season 3.
I just finished the season last night, so I can finally catch up with your reactions!😁 I completely get your dislike of Wade, and I think it's entirely intentional. I don't like him, either. I don't know if the point is that "we need men like him on that wall," or if the writer just wanted to have a wide range of personality types involved, and decided to make one of the most necessary but justifiably aloof characters carry the ball of abrasive extremist. I agree it just doesn't feel right that we would have seen the last of Will. He and Saul were sort of floating on the periphery of the story the whole time, and I don't think either would be tossed out the moment they seem to find purpose in the long-term narrative. I wonder if Will somehow still meets up with the San-Ti, or if a wildcard third party gets involved. I'm actually thinking the absurd advancement potential of AI could make the Sophons the ultimate decider of this whole game, in a way neither side sees coming, and I'm wondering if they might rescue Will eventually. As for Saul, I still haven't figured out what Wenjie communicated to him with her joke. I know some people have done explanation videos, but my pride won't let me find out that way. 😅 But I'll say taking the information about the San-Ti being unable to lie, and seeing their reaction to learning humans *can*, combined with their apparent inability to read our minds, then coming up with the ultimate human "black boxes" to mess with the San-Ti's planning was the most ingenuous thing we've seen Wade come up with so far. Though I'll say I'm becoming increasingly suspicious about that information. It occurred to me that it could just be the *Sophons* who can't lie, not the San-Ti. It could even be an elaborate ruse on their part. Both sides are playing superchess against one another.
Wade isn't to be liked and I doubt he would care, but I think he is to be respected. He is a textbook utilitarian. You said in the intro that Wade "does not embody our best qualities", but Even the San-ti recognise him as a strong leader. His best qualities are pragmatism, honesty (in a particular way) and strength of will. This whole show begs questions about ethics, ethno-(or geno?)centrism and....I could go on and on. My favourite question about Wade is this; Wade may well be the one to save humanity, but after 400 years of his influence in doing so, what kind of humanity will we be?
Yes! This is an excellent question -- and I think Auggie calling him a Fascist is very apt, because after centuries of his leadership, I can imagine the world basically being a fascist dictatorship This may seem a bit abstract, but thinking of him reminds me of the police. To be a police officer, you have to be able and willing to make hard decisions, engage in violence, you may be called on to fight and/or shoot someone, etc. What this seems to lead to is people who want to engage in violence, fight and/or shoot someone are drawn to the job, cause there aren't a lot of jobs where that is a possibility. But of course, this is a huge problem because if that's what attracted you to the job, then you are way more likely to do it when it isn't necessary, to reach for those tools in your arsenal instead of negotiation or de-escalation, or well, anything else. A better police officer, in my opinion, is someone who went into the job because they wanted to protect people and all of those other things (the violence, etc) are things they don't want to do, but will do if they have to. Which means they will try other things first. Wade, to me, seems like someone who went into this field because he liked the idea of power and being able to make decisions without consequences, basically run things like it's his own puppet show. He's the police officer who took the job because he likes guns. He's not going to consider other alternatives first. He's not going to reach for consensus, he's not going to try to de-escalate. He just wants to be in charge. And that is not something I would want in a leader.
Some people think the first book is slow compared to the others, it’s a slow burn mystery and you don’t really get that in the show. But it at least helped me understand why Wade was so cut and dry about it. In his eyes, they all had to be wiped out for humanity to be successful. There could have been another way, but i guess time is of the essence 🤷♂️ still hate him
i rly appreciate ur hatred of wade !!! there r so many ppl in the community who hate on auggie for no reason (bc she's traumatized that her life's work was used to murder a bunch of children?) but love wade (and raj's character in the books) bc they identify with him or something. honestly he deserves all the hate, even if his character is interesting... also i don't think you're wrong in saying that ppl think wade is smarter than he actually is - the staircase project is kinda giving an act of desperation rather than a genius strategic move, especially with wade making it clear that he just wants to accomplish something during his lifetime and it not even working the way they intended it to all in all i loved ur reactions & perspective on the show! see u in a few yrs for season 2 \o/
I saw someone hating on Augie for not wanting her friend to take to many anxiety pills. People not only have zero empathy but have been desensitized by "good guys" who commit horrific atrocities and are still meant to be rooted for. I don't personally think there's anything wrong with rooting for wade (yet I've heard there's something in later books that did a better job of dividing people and wasn't black and white since the boat scene in the book had no children involved) and I actually quite like him and hate the boyfriend. People are stupid.
@@calvintyler9281Auggie doesn't want Cheng Jin to take anxiety pills mixed with booze. The way Cheng Jin reacts to things, it's obvious she suffers from OCD and anxiety and also drinks booze to self-medicate.
Since you brought up Serenity in an earlier reaction, Wade makes me think of the Agent. Not necessarily that it's actually how he sees himself but because it's pretty close to how I see the character (and they have the whole 'willing to kill children to accomplish their goal' thing in common!) The agent bluntly states he has no illusions that he is an evil person doing evil acts that are (and make him) irredeemable and undeserving of the world he is fighting for. But he truly believed in the worth of what he (thought) he was working to bring about, and so is very cold about it when Mal brings it up. Wade is willing to do terrible, irredeemable things because in his view they are necessary for the goal in front of him, preventing the complete end of humanity. I think you're probably right that he's in the position he is (as with most people in the highest leadership positions, corporate or governmental) in part because he is drawn to power in general, though I do read the character as being fully committed to developing that power toward (what he sees as) the 'greater good' as opposed to purely his own gain.
Whether things like killing everyone on the ship are ever justifiable on a broader level is really the grandest Trolley Problem question I can imagine. In the purely utilitarian abstract, decisions like where to direct limited resources (IE cutting funds to an aid budget to put them into another priority that may or may not truly help more people long term) that will lead to the deaths of many more children are coldly made all the time. On a personal level, I think it's very justifiable to feel that some things couldn't ever be allowable even in trying to prevent the end of humanity... but on a broader scale I can't avoid thinking that a complete end means no one ever has the chance to do good and humanity doesn't have the chance to try to improve. So I fall on the side that he's a necessary evil, but take the 'evil' part seriously and fully agree with hating him even if he is needed.
Here is the way I'm looking past the hard drive issue. Look, it's already bigger than any hard drive we have on the planet. They had to of put it onto this world like they put in the VR headset. They don't want us to have technical advancements so they wouldn't risk us backwards engineering the hard drive. So the hard drive had to have been indestructible. We couldn't have scratched it even if the fibers would have sliced it. That's just a theory anyway
Wade is a classic utility monster. If they stay true to the books most people are going to be screaming at characters that don't go with Wade's plans. I know I was, even though he is terrible.
would be cool if youtubers react to the chinese version, its a 1:1 version with the book so has so much depth, the ETO factions, the complete ye wenjie history with ALL her actions and nuances (book readers know what i mean😂),but i understand that 30 episodes is impossible, their own producers know that it was too long and the pace a little slow on the middle of the season, so they launched a 26 episodes version more cohesive if anyone want to watch, its called "three body aniversary edition",is a great serie overall for who like the proposal.
The Fermi Paradox is named after Enrico Fermi, an Astrophysicist from the early 1900's. He posited that even if life in the universe is rare, there are sooooo many stars that it should still be plentiful. if only 1% of stars had habitable planets. And only 1% of them evolved an intelligent species capable of technology like us, then that would still mean 100 million stars in our own galaxy had intelligent, technological species on them. The Universe is old, so many of those species should be older than us too. And not just by a few hundred years, not just by a few thousand years, but at least a few should be millions of years ahead of us, maybe even a billion or 2 years older than us. So, the Paradox states, why don't we hear from all those aliens. They should be everywhere we look at in the night sky. Why can't we hear their radio signal? That is the paradox. They should be everywhere we look, but we can't see/hear them anywhere. Game Theory is a mathematical construct designed to find out how complex situations are solved by reducing them to a set of rules and outcomes. The Prisoners Dilemma is probably the most famous (to the general public). The Prisoners Dilemma states that you and a partner steal valuable jewels but are about to be caught by the police, so you and your partner hide the gems. After you are arrested, you and your partner are taken to separate interrogation rooms where you are offered a deal, confess and testify against your partner and get 2 years in prison. If you do not confess, but your partner does, you get 10 years in prison. If both of you confess, you both get 2 years in prison. If neither of you confesses, then you both go free. What do you do? Do you confess or do you not. If you know that your partner will not confess, then you not confessing is the best option. But what if you cannot be sure that your partner will not confess? In a case where you do not know what your partner will do, then confessing becomes the best option.
...I know what both of those things are, which is why the book titles intrigued me. If I hadn't known that before watching, I wouldn't have noticed the book titles.
Wade is not supposed to be liked lol he's unlikable in the show and in the book. In fact his lack of morality is a plot point and in the book too he runs into voices who strongly disagree with his methods. But someone is needed to make the difficult decisions and help humanity survive. If I'm being honest, people probably like Wade (more than needs be lol) because he's a strong masculine figure who took the action to fight the SanTi.
Humm.. Not True lol SPOILER . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . He literally poisoned that Russian colleague and was about to get Cheng Xin killed so he could become the Swordholder 😅
Wade is a necessary leader. Hate it or love it, you need people like this to get things done. We are talking about literally saving the human species, every day counts. Wade is the best character of the show. I can already tell you don't like Trump.

@@adisakditantimedh331 i know. My comment was about people hating on Augie for stupid reasons.
@@calvintyler9281Yeah. I don’t hate Auggie. I got where she was coming from throughout the series.
Since you brought up Serenity in an earlier reaction, Wade makes me think of the Agent. Not necessarily that it's actually how he sees himself but because it's pretty close to how I see the character (and they have the whole 'willing to kill children to accomplish their goal' thing in common!)
The agent bluntly states he has no illusions that he is an evil person doing evil acts that are (and make him) irredeemable and undeserving of the world he is fighting for.
You whether love Wade or hate him, he's that kind of character, you don't need to explain it lol.
I think people have a hard time seeing Davos Seaworth as evil.
The Chinese (Tencent) series could have been wrapped up in 15-20 episodes. 30 was way too long and even 26 does not sound much better.
I don't think everyone need to like or understand Wade. In fiction some character is written to be hated usually .
Wade is not shown as a hero in the books. He's even less funny and a lot less likable in the books.
In the book, Wade never killed anyone.

Do you understand, this kind of people that you don’t like, keep us, SAFE.
Wade makes me think of Col Jessup in A Few Men: th-cam.com/video/hopNAI8Pefg/w-d-xo.html
That's not true lol
Wade did nothing wrong
If we are at war, we want a leader like Wade. People who hates Wade now will likely miss him in Season 3.
