Navajo Code Talkers’ WWII Legacy To Be Immortalized In New Museum

  • Ground has been broken on a new museum honoring Navajo Code Talkers. At age 94, Peter MacDonald is one of three still alive today. Their service was pivotal in winning World War II, but Marine Corps top brass initially rejected the idea, saying they “might embarrass this proud organization,” MacDonald recalls. Their success was a cruel paradox in light of America’s painful history of Native American boarding schools meant to strip students of their heritage.

    I am so glad for the Navajo Nation. They deserve more than a museum. It is wonderful to see how America can come together as one to defend it. All races get this credit. Japanese Americans fought as well in (Europe) WW2 to show their loyalty to the US after being bombed by their own people. "The Red Tails" too. It's like Charlie Daniels writes in his song "In America." "We may have done a little fighting amongst ourselves but you outside people best leave us alone. Cause we'll all stick together, you can take that to the bank, the cowboys, the hippie's, rebels and yanks." Thank you for your service Navajo Nation.

      @@halfdome4158 Local tribes fighting against each other on their native lands is very different than a colonizing group of Europeans doing everything in their power to wipe out an indigenous people and eventually sending their children off to boarding schools to erase their Native identity.
      And you obviously don’t know the history of the Anasazi. The Navajo didn’t cause the Anasazi to go extinct. By the time of the Navajo’s arrival, major Anasazi settlements had already been abandoned. The last of the Anasazi villages was abandoned by 1300, about a hundred years before the arrival of the Navajo.

    • @MrLantean
      @MrLantean 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The first step in code breaking is to know the language of the code. Both Japanese and German language are widespread but Navajo language is only found in Navajo reservations and only spoken by Navajos. Also Navajo is an unwritten language. The Navajo Code is actually much simpler that the codes used by Japanese and German military. The Japanese is unable to break it because it is in a language unknown to them. The Japanese actually had an opportunity to break it. A Navajo soldier known as Joe Kieyoomia was among the American POWs captured in the Phillipines. He was first assumed to be Japanese American due to his Japanese sounding surname. When his Navajo ancestry was confirmed, the Japanese suspected that intercept American code was in his native language and interrogated him. Kieyoomia was a Navajo instead of a code talker and was only to translate the literal meanings instead the coded meanings. As a result, the Japanese were unable to crack the code. Eventually they gave up the attempt to learn the Navajo language.

    so is their land controlled by the blm like many reservations so they still to this day not do what they want on their own land ? they quit fighting and took less and less land and horrible things like being told they would get food delivered as the land couldn't sustain them and starved until they went out to get food from those who got their land and then how many hung for it in mn. ? lets not forget the price on their heads for being natives. many places still looked down on for being native.
