How wonderful Steve! Glad we were able to show you some lovely memories again. We spent many hours driving up through AR from Houston to St Louis when Alex was in college there. Little Rock was our half way stop over point if we ever broke up the journey. In fact we watched Alex's virtual graduation from a hotel room there during covid 😊
I’m so grateful to those 16th century people who scraped the £453 together to save this beautiful church. The church not only survived Henry VIII but WWII. The windows look like they survived as well. I’m an American but was raised to be an anglophile and my ancestors came from Britain so why not. They knew what they were doing when they built the Abbey, it was just about the only building that never got flooded in 2007, Tewkesbury gets a lot of flooding.
That was a nice cruise along the River Avon. It’s so different than being on the canal. There were some wonderful old bridges and beautiful houses along the way. I loved the dogs talking to each other. The Abbey was lovely too. It’s such an old church. Take care and have a good weekend. Cheers!

I think that Hamish just enjoys the challenge of the steps down into tte galley and is pleased with himself when he arrives safely at the bottom. The smugness can't of course last long, because he then has to ask for help in remounting the stairs. What a lovely cruise though, some superb countryside and impressive old bridges.

Jasper is here on the boat with us, but we do have plans to scatter his ashes at one of his most favourite places one day. We have been waiting until our children Alex and Sophie are in the UK at the same time so we can all be there together, and that hasn't happened for a while, and probably won't with Sophie living in the USA and Alex working on a cruise ship! Never mind, he's safe with us for now 😊❤️

Lovely to meet you too Mark! Thankfully we survived the storm without damage unlike some other boaters. The photos online have been shocking. We are staying put for now while the fallen trees are cleared from the canal ahead of us 😊

Hamish is like a mate to me as he I am sure equates to my age group, a little doddery but keep going, don't want to miss anything kind of guy. Thank you for your lovely, lovely comment Nigel! The food was amazing at the Old Black Bear. A very small, but very perfect menu from that huge smoker! I now wish I had more footage to show it better, but there’s always a balance between filming for our vlog and enjoying the moment without documenting every minute. There are so many times when I wish I could have gone back and refilmed something to get a better shot or more detail but as we are constantly moving it’s never a possibility. We often say Hamish is like a distinguished old gentleman who wants to be part of it all but not always sure what’s going on, but is happy to be there anyway. We treasure every day we have with him and love that he’s still going strong approaching 16 now, living his best life as a boat dog ❤️
What a lovely summer day even if a bit chilly. Here it is a sunny (thank goodness!) 20F day with 16MPH winds so it "feels like" 7F. Last year was very mild but so far this oncoming winter looks to be gearing up to be cold. The abbey and the grounds are fabulous. The pub looked really nice and the food looked amazing. 😊 No wonder you went back. ❤
Oh daughter messaged from Wisconsin this week and said they were forecasting -25°F wind chill temperatures! I think you’re right Dorothy that it could be a cold, cold winter. I watched a canal in Germany recently and all the locks were automatic, even the old ones which is typical for the Germans but a shame that the UK government doesn't care enough about the canal system to invest in upgrading. Love the river cruising guys. 👌
Hi David, thanks for watching 😊. From what we understand many of the canals in Europe are much more modern and used for commercial traffic and hence the investment. The UK canal system is very old and really only used for leisure nowadays and the old locks and bridges etc.. do add to the charm. Fortunately we are rarely in a hurry. I guess we can’t really have it all ways (swish automated locks yet retain the heritage). There are some automated locks on the larger rivers (Severn, Trent) perhaps due to their size and they do also still carry some commercial traffic.
@@onedaymoreaboard the canal systems is such an asset to the country and i believe it could be a help to the housing problem, however I'm an Irish man living in Australia so what i think hardly matters. 😂😂 keep up the great work.

Loved learning about Tewesbury Here in Houston, this weekend I've done my once a year baking ( my mom's Christmas Jule bread). @onedaymoreaboard first retirement goal is to remember what it's like to be in charge of my own time. Go where I want when I want. I certainly hope to get back to the UK. Who knows, maybe at some point I'll get to meet you in person. Don't worry, it won't be anytime soon. There was a reference to Pete's engineering in the vlog. What kind of engineer? Stay well.
Heading towards Strensham lock our throttle able snapped and we hit the gates with a fair wallop unable to slow down. A lock keeping lady screamed at us to slow down and stop many times before we came to an embarrassing rest. We roped the boat to a mooring for the night and waited for a mechanical man to rescue us the next day. Happy Days.
Oh no not good memories!! On the plus side at least it happened close to the lock and mooring. The river is so wide it’s a worry if anything goes wrong. Thanks for watching as always 😊
Hi Wyn, the water level seems to be controlled more by the weirs, the locks are simply to enable boats to safely navigate the weirs. Eventually when the river is in flood, the weirs (and locks) get overwhelmed. Not sure if that really helps? Thanks for watching. Pete 😊

We have had quite a few viewers suggest the same over the years but with the historic system and mechanisms, adding power tools to the mix would not really be in keeping with the slow pace, plus the strain it would add. The other concern with any power tools on board is also the ability to keep them charged as power consumption and generation is always something we have to think about. So for now we just accept that it takes time and effort to wind locks and bridges, but it’s all a good work out! 😊
You haven’t missed it. We still haven’t recorded it, but will be doing so in the next few days! I went to the USA to visit our daughter Sophie and then when I came back we have both been sick for about a month, and not up to being seen on camera and talking coherently 😂 But we are all good now thankfully so stay tuned 😊
These river videos have been particularly challenging for the audio quality as they were filmed on such windy days. I was actually using an external microphone with a wind muff for some of the filming, but there was a firmware issue that caused a horrible static crackle. Sadly it wasn’t until I downloaded the footage for editing that I realised what a huge problem the wind or the static had been. I’ve just had to do my best editing the terrible audio to make it slightly better, as I can’t go back and film again. It’s either use what I have, or bin all of that footage, which I’m reluctant to do as these videos are our diary of our travels, that so many others have come to enjoy. We’ve invested in some lapel microphones and are just getting to grips with using them, as they haven’t been as easy as we had imagined. Thanks for sticking with us. It’s been a very steep learning curve 😊
We have never seen anyone hunting ducks or geese on the canals or rivers, but had a quick google and it seems there are very strict laws here about hunting and shooting wildlife, only certain species, in a very limited time frame in very limited locations. Thanks for watching 😊
At the 30:36 time marker, seeing the state of that American flag and the French one is quite sad. I will contact Tewkesbury Abbey to get the right size of the American flag and send it to them. I do not like to see American flags is such disorder. Jane, Philadelphia,
Some flags of a historic nature are kept in original condition for a reason. i have my father in laws naval ensign from the second world war and would never dream of restoring it to as new condition.

I was just watching an episode of the BBC's Antiques Road show from Tewksbury. You actually showed a bit more of the Church. I looks like it ought to be a Cathedral. Beautiful place. Anyway happy birthday Pete.

Lovely to meet you too Mark! Thankfully we survived the storm without damage unlike some other boaters. The photos online have been shocking. We are staying put for now while the fallen trees are cleared from the canal ahead of us 😊

Thank you for the filming of such a lovely episode, a delight. The narration is superb, just the right amount of it. Of course my love are the dogs, dogs before people for me. Hamish is like a mate to me as he I am sure equates to my age group, a little doddery but keep going, don't want to miss anything kind of guy. My only thing was I would have liked more showing and details of your food for, Pete's dinner party birthday, it looked great and different. Keep on you lovely people!
Thank you for your lovely, lovely comment Nigel! The food was amazing at the Old Black Bear. A very small, but very perfect menu from that huge smoker! I now wish I had more footage to show it better, but there’s always a balance between filming for our vlog and enjoying the moment without documenting every minute. There are so many times when I wish I could have gone back and refilmed something to get a better shot or more detail but as we are constantly moving it’s never a possibility. We often say Hamish is like a distinguished old gentleman who wants to be part of it all but not always sure what’s going on, but is happy to be there anyway. We treasure every day we have with him and love that he’s still going strong approaching 16 now, living his best life as a boat dog ❤️

What a lovely summer day even if a bit chilly. Here it is a sunny (thank goodness!) 20F day with 16MPH winds so it "feels like" 7F. Last year was very mild but so far this oncoming winter looks to be gearing up to be cold. The abbey and the grounds are fabulous. The pub looked really nice and the food looked amazing. 😊 No wonder you went back. ❤
Oh daughter messaged from Wisconsin this week and said they were forecasting -25°F wind chill temperatures! I think you’re right Dorothy that it could be a cold, cold winter. @@onedaymoreaboard I remember a night that got down to -30 or more in Brown County in Jan 1994. The town where I live now was -36 that night. Lowest temp in IN history! 🥶

Love this channel. I live in Pershore and I’m always down by the river where you parked up. Will look out for you now. Btw. Between where you moored and the lock is the home of Toyah Wilcox and Robert Fripp which has river frontage. Not shown on your video.

I watched a canal in Germany recently and all the locks were automatic, even the old ones which is typical for the Germans but a shame that the UK government doesn't care enough about the canal system to invest in upgrading. Love the river cruising guys. 👌
Hi David, thanks for watching 😊. From what we understand many of the canals in Europe are much more modern and used for commercial traffic and hence the investment. The UK canal system is very old and really only used for leisure nowadays and the old locks and bridges etc.. do add to the charm. Fortunately we are rarely in a hurry. I guess we can’t really have it all ways (swish automated locks yet retain the heritage). There are some automated locks on the larger rivers (Severn, Trent) perhaps due to their size and they do also still carry some commercial traffic.
@@onedaymoreaboard the canal systems is such an asset to the country and i believe it could be a help to the housing problem, however I'm an Irish man living in Australia so what i think hardly matters. 😂😂 keep up the great work.

The scene towards the beginning og the many ducks reminds me how much natrowboat vlogs have increased my appreciation for water fowl. And then there are the endearing Poppy and Hamish (and the reminder of Jasper). Loved learning about Tewesbury Here in Houston, this weekend I've done my once a year baking ( my mom's Christmas Jule bread). And, big news: I am getting all my paperwork in order to RETIRE from the courthouse as of December 31st. After 25 years, it's time for a new chapter.😊 Leigh

@onedaymoreaboard first retirement goal is to remember what it's like to be in charge of my own time. Go where I want when I want. I certainly hope to get back to the UK. Heading towards Strensham lock our throttle able snapped and we hit the gates with a fair wallop unable to slow down. A lock keeping lady screamed at us to slow down and stop many times before we came to an embarrassing rest. We roped the boat to a mooring for the night and waited for a mechanical man to rescue us the next day. Happy Days.
Oh no not good memories!! On the plus side at least it happened close to the lock and mooring. The river is so wide it’s a worry if anything goes wrong. Thanks for watching as always 😊

A question for Pete ….do the locks on the rivers help to minimise flooding of riverside properties
Hi Wyn, the water level seems to be controlled more by the weirs, the locks are simply to enable boats to safely navigate the weirs. Eventually when the river is in flood, the weirs (and locks) get overwhelmed. Not sure if that really helps? Thanks for watching. Pete 😊

With so many power tools driven by battery power, would a power windlass be useful transiting locks?
We have had quite a few viewers suggest the same over the years but with the historic system and mechanisms, adding power tools to the mix would not really be in keeping with the slow pace, plus the strain it would add. The other concern with any power tools on board is also the ability to keep them charged as power consumption and generation is always something we have to think about. So for now we just accept that it takes time and effort to wind locks and bridges, but it’s all a good work out! 😊

You haven’t missed it. We still haven’t recorded it, but will be doing so in the next few days! I went to the USA to visit our daughter Sophie and then when I came back we have both been sick for about a month, and not up to being seen on camera and talking coherently 😂 But we are all good now thankfully so stay tuned 😊

Love your videos however I struggle to hear you. Please consider wearing microphones.
These river videos have been particularly challenging for the audio quality as they were filmed on such windy days. I was actually using an external microphone with a wind muff for some of the filming, but there was a firmware issue that caused a horrible static crackle. Sadly it wasn’t until I downloaded the footage for editing that I realised what a huge problem the wind or the static had been. I’ve just had to do my best editing the terrible audio to make it slightly better, as I can’t go back and film again. It’s either use what I have, or bin all of that footage, which I’m reluctant to do as these videos are our diary of our travels, that so many others have come to enjoy. We’ve invested in some lapel microphones and are just getting to grips with using them, as they haven’t been as easy as we had imagined. Thanks for sticking with us. It’s been a very steep learning curve 😊
Do anyone while cruising on the canal hunt ducks & gooses ? is it an offend doing so ?
We have never seen anyone hunting ducks or geese on the canals or rivers, but had a quick google and it seems there are very strict laws here about hunting and shooting wildlife, only certain species, in a very limited time frame in very limited locations. Thanks for watching 😊

Some flags of a historic nature are kept in original condition for a reason. i have my father in laws naval ensign from the second world war and would never dream of restoring it to as new condition.
