    Many ask why the Germans fought up until the bitter end…this is exactly why

    • @WangMingGe
      @WangMingGe 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +98

      It is why in Ukraine we fight so hard today (ignore the user name; I am Ukrainian but earn my living working for Chinese clients). Most folks I know who are ethnic Ukrainians do not care for our politicians; they have no interest in liberal globalism or any of that nonsense. But Russian rule...we know what that means. And they use the Buryats, Pechenegs, Matsi and other such troops today for the same reason they did in 1945....

      I've heard from my great-grandfather that they were begged by polish women not to retreat or at least take their children with them.
      He told me that many jumped into wells, or threw their babies down there and slit their wrists afterwards. The fear of the soviet horde was mind-boggling.
      In the end he managed to rescue just over 30 civilians (german and polish) on his torpedoboat and bring them to Kiel.
      From there, he said that most of them continued to flee westwards.

      @@ZoomerHistorian Not all of it was completely true, but cruelties like that or even worse actually happened probably in a thousand other places back then, so it was sort of true, from a certain point of view. Nemmersdorf was fake news though. There was a massacre, but it was only about 30 civilians in this case and all of them had probably been shot. There was apparently at least one case of R*, but Goebbels and his team altered and misrepresented the evidence for propaganda and made it look even worse than it was. They did the same with the bombing of Dresden, by the way. The official number of people actually killed was around 25k, which is already terrible enough, but not over 100k as it was claimed. The harder stuff about Nemmersdorf, like naked women nailed to barns, has never happened, at least not there. It was apparently from just rumours or imagination only after the war. If you thought this was already vile or barbaric, you should check out what alone a few hundred men of the Dirlewanger Brigade had done to ten thousands before. Ever heard of units like that? As sickening as all of this is - what is sickening too is that post-war Germany did not remember and honour all these lost lives; the same goes for the millions of German soldiers.
    Whether they were Nazis or not, it should be normal to mourn our grandmothers and -fathers. This has never been encouraged in Germany, never has been spoken of at school.

    While these events are abhorrent and it makes me sick they got off Scott free, we have to remember history doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Undoubtedly many soviet civilians suffered atrocities at the hands of the axis, anti partisan warfare was grim, it was common for a village to be torched and men executed and women sent to labour camps, so to some extent the rage of the soviet troops is understandable. If my wife and kids had been executed by the ss I’d have little remorse when the tables turned.
    However equally much of the axis violence was itself a response to years of soviet oppression and atrocities in Eastern Europe. Stalin’s regime killed millions way before the war even started, and the west backed that regime at a time when it had a kill count of around 10 million, and the axis kill count was in the thousands. What I’m trying to say is context is important but all things considered the soviets kinda had it coming, and the double standards also are ridiculous.

      The thing is a lot of German actions in the east are exaggerated, misrepresented or some are even made up completely. Whereas the allied side atrocities are hardly talked about, leaving a very misunderstood view of things. Perhaps you should make a video about the soviet occupation of east Europe in 1940 and the crimes they committed, and then how this lead to reprisals during Barbarossa.

    Soviets used a two tiered military. They used soldiers from their Far East as shock troops first, then more European units moved in after the battles. The more primitive troops were adept at brutality constant with their native cultures devoid of any western Judeo Christian values. Stalin appreciated the cultural differences of his empire and used them to his advantage. Something that’s presently being done now with illegal migrants, but in a soft power model. Europe, the UK, America, eventually suffering the same fate. Welcome to the realization how real power works.

His mom was Polish and both parents where originally from Posen. HIs dad died in the German Army and he would sink into a depressed state if I pressed too hard on WW2 but I got the story over time. We did move to West Berlin for a year when I was young. We also travelled through East Germany and Poland...the area where they used to spend their summers when it was part of Germany, for my dad it represented better times. It was of course, a total sh*t show at this time, early 1981. When I asked my dad where all the Germans were he so they where all killed, streets names changed, now it is all Polish and stuck with Communism. Given the conditions my dad was upset more for the Poles than anyone else since here they where ALL occupied. I was learning a bunch of dark historical things at 11-12 years old when up to that point my worldview was more just Puka shells, OP shorts, skateboards, AC/DC, and the only thing I knew about WW2 was Hogans Heroes.
