I saw one of these creatures when I was about 8 years old in Germany. We were playing in a marsh that was full of reeds. I am not sure but the reeds may have been some type of crop. I was walking through the water that was only a few inches deep pushing aside the reeds. Then all of a sudden when I pushed aside some reeds there was a long neck with a snake like head right in front of me. It was standing about 4 feet high because it's head was directly level with mine. The head was about 7 inches across and the neck was about 4 inches in diameter. It also had large eyes. It made a hissing sound when I came upon it. I fell backwards and when I looked again it was gone. I didn't see if it had a body because that was below the reeds. I grew up on a farm in the USA and saw all kinds of snakes and other animals as a child. This creature was something I was unfamiliar with. It is still very vivid in my memory.

Ive seen it and so has my friend. We are two different nationalities (American and Irish) and saw it in different places in the world. We're both women. I can absolutely, categorically say it exists. One thing though, its a spectre and there is NO physical evidence for it. It doesnt go after women, its just women are more likely to be clairvoyant enough to percieve it.

Actually your description, especially the hissing somehow gives me the picture of a "Flying Lizard" (The Draco Mindanensis) and Chlamydosaurus kingii combined (if it had frills) or an extant cousin of the same species. Considering Austria and alpine environment (usually makes things shorter due to oxygen levels in high altitudes) but a larger variety could be still existing waiting to be found again. Just like they found the 'thought to be extinct' Coelacanth ( an ancient fish type) in the Indian Ocean near Madagascar and India.
Considering hardly people venture deep into the Alps 'all the time' unlike previously to collect some food or mine resources, it might be highly unlikely you will come across that type of species. It is a high possibility they still exist. A large Chlamydosaurus would be enough to frighten a man and being so huge , who knows they would have even consumed human flesh ?! or could have been a scavenger species. Mightbe clearing of forests and widespread human population have nearly destroyed their habitat and might be made them more "endemic" to the Alps.
I don't know if I talk gibberish but just something I consider a possibility (among the other millions of theories of course).

If you think about it, all these legendary "dragon" types seem to have existed way back in Europe during the middle ages. And there never really seemed to be an abundance of them, meaning they were far and few between . They could have easily been killed off by the next century. They were flying nightmares that could devastate entire villages and towns

In the middle ages, they not only made a bunch of art of killing dragons, they also threw their sewage in the rivers and streets to the point of cholera outbreaks. Things that make you go hmmm...

hah - the primary commentator they picked was interested primarily in the sociological and folkloric implications of the tatzelwurm reports. Plus a skeptical zoo director. I think we know what the show producers want us to believe. Oh and the fact that Klagenfurt now makes money off the legend is supposed to be a further stab at credibility. Got it.
History is more credible than anyone involved here thinks. I'm pleased to see a show actually covering the tatzelwurm, a creature largely ignored by media.

There is just one drawback that is being overlooked in all these logical explanations. Point is that none refer to the fact that, in the previous years or even in the middle ages, the 'awareness quotient' of humans used to be higher than the present day owing to physical strain and survival. There are enough evidences even of the stone age, that the stone age man inscribed perfectly what "he saw" not what "he thought".
There is possibility of heightened superstition in the Middle Ages but even then no one was so insane to go and report something they couldn't make out for sure. As a scientist or researcher, I would probably not discard evidences from the old ages. For e.g. the "Bhimbetka Rock Shelter in Madhya Pradesh, India" and also in caves near Germany , Austria and switzerland, there is always only portrayal of the mammals like the caribou, stag etc. exactly as they were seen. No one would make up such a creature in those times of awareness and survival. For e.g. "The man with Big Foot cave painting in the U.S.A near Minnesota, is itself an answer to the question. Why would anyone carve something else until such a creature had appeared in their lifetime.I hope everyone gets what I meant.

Large mammals are food. Did they paint large predators? Probably not, because attracting them by sympathetic magic was not something they would want to do.

I agree. Even to this day tribal people who live in wilderness areas have a better awareness of their environment than these academics who live in civilisation. Yet the latter often dismiss the former accounts as 'tribal superstitions' when they speak of seeing creatures like dragons.

The tatzelwurm? Detail description the creature has two or 4 leg's, if 4 leg's then this creature could be the tanystropheus.
Were it Plesio like the other's it would have flippers but, in place of the flipper's are 4 leg's that's why I think; it might be the Tanystropheus.
I also feel that the people are seeing Giant Snake's there could be Giant Eel's in the Lake.
If someone were to launch a expedition too find this animal use extreme caution search for Burrows and are Den not too far away from the Lake's Shore line.
The Burrow could be camouflaged sense the areas around the Lake's density and foliage.
Obvious answer but wouldn't necessary be that easy Unusual Footprints in the soil going to and from the Lake Water's up on Land.

As a Psychological Researcher, there is a term for Martis... STUPID. There is a VERY BIG difference between a SCALED CREATURE and a FURRY CREATURE... Even when the fur is wet... Mammals have distinct features that do not match Reptiles... There are some mammal resembling BIRDS but none resembling Reptiles. River Otters got a dog like nose but a rounded almost cat like head, and the bodies resemble that of a Beaver's... Not a Snake or other Reptile. What little bit of a tail that RIVER otters have isn't much to claim it was LONG and SERPENTINE like... Otters have thin and short tails unlike SKINKS which have short FAT tails...
There always has to be an ASSPERT to claim Mistaken Identity on what EYE WITNESSES have seen. If you weren't there then How can you say what I saw or ANYONE else has seen. I once saw the Queen of England "kiss" a "random" stranger, but when asking the person, turned out they were one of her family members and there was no kiss, it was a hug and a greeting. Doesn't mean I didn't see what I thought I saw, means I was mistaken, but when it comes to an animal... IF I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS, I MENTALLY MAP OUT AND NOTE it's description, and search for what that animal could be... Whether I do a search on the internet or go to a Zoologist OR a FISH AND GAMES WARDEN... I trust the Fish and Game Wardens OVER ANY Zoologist, because a Zoologist ONLY KNOWS ABOUT THE ANIMALS IN THEIR ZOO AND NEVER GET OUT INTO THE FIELD TO RESEARCH OTHER CREATURES IN THEIR HABITAT... How can ANY ZOOLOGIST say what I saw was THIS or THAT if my description DOESN'T FIT any of their WATCHED OVER creatures in their PUBLIC PRISONS called a Zoo.
Off topic: Maybe that's a way to stop some Criminals and Prevent others from becoming a Criminal... Make the Jails a Zoo, a public prison for others to Spectate... Certainly should stop the Criminals from doing Horrible things to each other... I say that because many prisoners still have that GOOD Side to them... Yes they have done wrong but NONE like child molesters or women beaters and they SHOW those criminals that they messed up in a very physical way. So when the Public is there to witness them being in Jail, they won't go assaulting those people, but would rather AVOID or SHUN those Criminals.
