  • 3 way exhaust comparison.
Stock........Inner scuba delete hole capped ....... 3" pipe from hole to tip with stock muffler.
    Enable closed captions.
    Stock Exhaust - Cold Start
Inner Scuba/silencer removed with hole capped.
Maybe 10-15% louder than stock. Slightly increased rumble at start up but hardly noticeable otherwise.
No drone at any speed. I couldn't really hear any difference from inside the car compared to stock.
Didn't bother recording with hole uncapped as there are already hundreds of vids of this on TH-cam.When the hole was uncapped I did notice a drone from inside the car when driven, especially at lower rpms.
It was ear porn at any revs but too loud for this old fella.
3" pipe joining hole to back of tip. Looks a bit ugly from under the car but looks completely stock from any other angle.
Marginally quieter and a little sharper than the uncapped hole.
No noticeable drone while driving at any speed.
All sounds are louder due to camera being so close, not as loud when away from the car. Finally drive away with mild revs.
Very happy with the result but I know it's each to his own.

Was going to do the scuba delete, now I see what is a proper way of doing it!

I had a pro weld perfect 3" stainless "test pipes" in place of my cats (no sniff tests here anymore and car is almost 25 years old) and removed the boomerang shaped diffuser, replacing it with another piece of 3' stainless into the stock muffler unit..... PERFECT Seriously, has a wonderful burble and rip with your foot in it (like a $1500 custom exhaust) but after warming up and with nominal load - is still quiet and tame sounding. The highway pulls are breathtaking.

Sounds great! What did you use to cap the hole?

I used an old jam jar lid which happened to be the same diameter. This was only temporary though and just so I could hear and record the sound of that stage of the mod. The difference between that and stock was so insignificant I decided to go further. Glad I did.

Very informative exhaust mods. Do you have any sound clips from sitting in the cabin?

Sorry no interior sound clips but I'll try to do one soon. With the windows up it sounds almost stock and at cruising speeds is very quiet but put your foot down with the windows down or sunroof open and enjoy. I now drive around with the sunroof open all the time :) No regrets.

Thanks, sounds good! I'm planning to mod the stock exhaust for my 540i soon. is it a difficult job to tackle yourself? Obviously I'll need access to welding tools!

I used a reciprocating saw to remove the inner scuba, this was easy and took about 10 minutes. My welding skills are very limited and I don't have any pipe bending equipment so I took it to a local exhaust shop for the joiner pipe install. Cost was NZ $140 and it took less than 1 hour. It was well worth it IMO. The sounds still put a smile on my face 6 months later :)

I'm very tempted to do this mod now - where did you source the 3" pipe? Did you also cut out exhaust tip?

The pipe was supplied by the exhaust shop, they also cut out the hole in the stock tip to join the 2 together.

Now just Put an Electric exhaust cutout on it, then take out The y-resonator and you've got The best of both worlds, screaming v8 or rumbling cruiser at The click of a Button
