Good review! I recently got AF3 and have been testing it in WOs, switching between it and VF3 and AF1. AF1 is the softest, bounciest, fastest, most comfortable, and true-to-size for me (mid-to-forefoot strike, medium arch, and large feet: US size 13). My PRs for the 5K, 10K, half, and marathon are in AF1. I was hoping AF3 would work even better since it looks so good, but it's pretty tight in the toes and has less energy return than the AF1. I can see it growing on me given the lightness and smoothness. I'm just not sure its comfort and performance will beat AF1 for me in the long run. Anyone who loves AF1 and likes VF3 probably shouldn't get AF3. Anyone who likes AF1 but loves the VF3 and would appreciate a little more bounce and energy return likely should buy AF3 if they don't mind spending the money.

Your sweet spot tennis analogy really hits home. As someone who played tennis in the past on a casual basis it is such a good comparison. You could get these oversized racquets with big sweet spots or you could get ones with smaller heads and slightly smaller sweet spots. Same with shoes. If you find that sweet spot on landing then it's all good. And just like you could pay top dollar for those oversized racquets that aren't necessarily better, you can pay top dollar for over-stacked dual plated shoes like the Prime X2. Thanks for your Alphafly 1 v 3 comparison.

I have both, I like both. I definitely prefer the fit and feel of the 3. It's way more comfortable and smoothed out. I'd say it's 100 percent worth the upgrade but I'm not a serious runner nor do I care about races or wattage or PR times.

V2 and V3 have to much drop imo, as a forefoot runner V1 is still the best for me.

I don’t like Hoka in general but I need to grant that all Hoka shoes are set with 5 mm drop. And I think it’s a good drop, just in a middle range.

I have the Alphafly V1. Amazing shoe for short runs but I have added a heel wedge of 8mm because in a long run I heel strike.. Definitely prefer the Vaporfly drop. Is the Alphafly V3 more like the Vaporfly V2?

    • @run-are

It's more like the Vaporfly 3 by way of rocker placement and feel. I do love the geometry in the VF 1 & 2 but the AF3 feels more rounded in comparison but starts around the same area. As a heel striker do you feel like you can get onto the pods ok on the AF1 or do you feel like you have to roll over them from the rear?

@@run-are Until I added the 8mm heel wedge I felt like there was a bump I had to go over every step if not going at threshold pace or faster. With the heel insert they feel like a normal drop shoe.
