Rip Currents -- The Hidden Danger

  • This video details the dangers of rip currents and explains how to identify rip currents, as well as how to stay safe. Swimming in Prince Edward Island National Park of Canada is an ideal way to spend a summer day. But before heading into the water make sure that you and your family know how to break the grip of the rip.
    Rip currents are powerful, fast-moving seaward currents that can pull even the strongest swimmers out to sea. Be safe. Know how to swim, never swim alone and, when in doubt, don't go out. If you become caught in a rip current, don't fight the current; swim out of the current, then to shore. If you can't escape, float or tread water. If you need help, call or wave for assistance.

    This video should be shown in school to our children - especially during June before the summer break. Along with class discussion, it may save a life. Great information - well done.

    i got caught in a rip only 2 weeks ago in north devon, it was the only time i never had my fins on, i was with my partner one min and gone the next, i found this a very weird and nerve racking, some guy in a canoe came up to me after about 5mins and said he would stay with me till i was out of it. i can see how people panic and why but i kept calm, i ended up about 200 yard down the beach then walked back to find my partner looking for me. id like to say thank you to that guy in the canoe whoever he may be.

    If you notice at 5:28, how the swimmer looked back for the wave coming and how he swims with the wave and not against it, that is how you swim back in to shore.

    In any situation where you think you're going to die, you should focus on maintaining your bearing and composure. Remaining calm isn't just so you can die without fear, it is so you can concentrate on surviving. I unknowingly got caught in a rip tide once and was pulled way, way out from shore. Yes, it was nerve racking to say the least and drowning did cross my mind, but I kept my composure and managed to swim along the beach and ride the waves in. I was lucky to escape considering I had no knowledge of rip currents, but I know remaining calm had a lot to do with my survival.

    Thank you for posting! This is a must watch for all beach goers. As a teen I was caught in a riptide off the coast of Ocean City Maryland. If not for an attentive lifeguard, I probably wouldn't be here today.

    I was at El Salvador and I innocently went into the water having fun with my husband, then we couldn’t feel the ground, we were in a rip current and we started panicking, it was a miracle we came out it happened so fast

      aattitude Dude do you actually believe that learning what a cell is made and what's the function of each structures of is going to have any use in life in general? That's something you should only have to learn if your area of study in university is somewhat related to microbiology, and where I'm from that's about 5 people in a class of 30. So we learned something that 83% of the class will never have any use for whatsoever, over things like cpr and the subject of the video, which can potentially save lives. Now, I don't really know if you're serious, based on how hard you're strawmanning me, because I never implied "learning about how the bodies of all living things are structured is bs". Learning about what's INSIDE of a cell is going waaay too deep into it.

    My daughter and I have grown up on the beach, at 10 she knows more about her beach than I do. When we get to the edge of the beach, she says "Nope, not swimming today!" We have both been stuck in a rip, swam out the other side and walked back, over coral, for 2 km. Please, please don't think just because you are a strong swimmer, you will be fine. Swim, left, or right, then swim in, and walk back :)

    today i almost drowned .. it was very scary ,i got caught between a rip tide. i had used all my energy up to get out in complete panic & the more out of breath I became, I then swallowed water, thought to myself ,, f !! i'm gonna pass out & die. my heart was racing, and I wasn't moving forward to the beach. the waves where very high. LUCKY I remembered,, a week ago i was reading up on how to survive drowning ! as I swim most week in the sea, A coincidence as I remembered to tell myself to be calm , down and say to myself. YOu won't drown.! turn on your back. and pull yourself in using back strokes.. I got past it.. and was so relieved when I got back to shore.. I just stayed there at the edge gasping for air waiting to clam down. was shaking a while after. Not my time yet !

      Instead of exhausting your strength if you get stuck in a rip current, swim to the side for 50 to 100 feet until you are out. Then let the waves take you back to shore. Or you can float until the rip current ends, swim diagonally then let waves take you back to shore.

    Very good education info and tips for anyone going to the beach. Could prevent a panic situation and drowning. Pass the info to your friends also. It may prevent seeing one of them drown or could help a buddy save you if you got into a bad situation.

      You'll be OK! Sometimes it seems like life is targeting us for misfortune. I've been in 2 comas in my life due to others negligence. What I have learned: be careful whose car you get into, choose your friends wisely, don't leave your drink unattended, save your money, take care of your health, keep in contact with friends, classmates, learn a trade, and stay straight. If you don't it will cost you problems later in life.

    Rip currents are no joke I was lucky cuz the rip current I was in wasn't too deep so I could stand but I kid you not I was running with all my might but the it would keep me in place. Luckily I called upon Poseidon to 1v1 to 21 points. I won.

    Not so many people know about this which is pretty tragic.....
    Here's my story._.
    when I was a little bit younger, I noticed that when I stood(the water was until my elbows) I felt like the water was pushing me further. I didn't think much of it cause I could get out of it pretty easily......
    then one other time I was swimming(I was pretty far from my friends) and I couldn't move. I swam not using fully my energy...but it was pretty hard?..In fact, I was moving but.....slowly?. I understood that something was wrong but I didn't panic instead I got mad that I couldn't move faster (I was pretty dumb let me be honest;-;) My friends were screaming to me to come closer to them, I got mad. I started using my whole strength and energy(just me and my madness) and I didn't notice how I moved faster. I don't know what exactly it was but I guess I just did a pretty good job cuz I didn't go further to the sea and got closer to the beach;-;
    NOT TODAY SATAN. NOT TODAY.
    So yea. If any of you go swimming and any of these happen to you, please don't worry.
    Everything will be fine if you start swimming to the side, swim for 5-10 minutes until you feel safer and feel the waves take you to the shore. Sometimes these rip currents may have a big width of 20m. Don't worry though because usually they end up after 3-4 minutes(as I heard?)
    Don't be stupid like me and swim using all your energy, we never know what can happen.
    BE SAFE and DON'T SWIM ALONE PLEASE ;-;

    I got under a HUGE rip tide 20x the size of this one and in my beach instead of sand its rocks and I was at shoetree and the wave slammed me to the ground hitting my head on a rock causing me to lose consciences. I was floating on the huge waves and it didn't take long for someone to notice me and pul me out. I had to go to the hospital. yikes
