      The guy teaching the Dalmatian to “dance” is one those people who take these competitions WAY to seriously. I can’t stand all the pedigree BS and talking about bloodlines. They treat their dogs like possessions...the Pomeranian lost and the greyhound looking dog list because their owners are delusional and neurotic. Neither of them have done any work with their dogs as far as dog shows go and neither of them even have any experience with dog competitions but their dream is to win Crafts. Whaaa??? They literally think they will just walk in and win everything. They both lost and couldn’t believe it. That’s so delusional I can’t even wrap my brain around it. Lol!!

    • @annabanana7659
      @annabanana7659 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bbevensadams6296 I wouldn't say they're neurotic, more like having illusions of grandeur. The owner of Rocky (the German Spitz), Caroline, wanted to show off and only bought the dog just so she can enter Crufts but can't maintain her composure once she's in the competition. The owner of Rama (Pharaoh hound), also wanted to show off- seeing as he bought the dog from a champion line with the dam being a winner of Best in Show in Crufts but can't control the dog's hunting instincts and wasn't willing to do the work other than that half-assed 'training'.
      As for the dog trainer training Dally the Dalmatian, I can't really criticize him since he just reminded me of my old volleyball coach. Coaches can get veeery intense when they're passionate about something xD I do understand the frustration about the pedigree though because it can come off as being an elitist and most of them required the dogs to be docked (ears, dew claws, and/or tail) to be 'show level' and have to keep the pet from being neutered.

Nope! Owners of show dogs should still research on the best dog for their activity level and experience just like everyone else. Just because the parents are well trained, obedience isn’t genetic (to a degree). HARD WORK.

    Dog Shows are great when it comes to the celebration and recognition of dogs and the breeds. That being said, owners should really be introduced into the world of dog shows and learn about the means to compete prior to going and getting a Registered dog of a particular breed without preparation for the breed before considering purchasing the pet. Owners HAVE to be familiar with the breed and know how to raise them properly as they were bred to do because that is one of the considerations judges make when ranking these animals in the show.
    While I think shows are nice. They have quite a few downsides as well. First, we see breeds develop breed-specific conditions that hold negative impacts on a dog's overall quality of life such as Hip Displasia in German Sherpherds, OCD in Bull Terriers, etc. The other issue I take is with the standard requirements for certain breeds such as Dobermans, Boxers, Poodles, Shitzhus, etc. In some breeds they promote the cropping of ears and docking of tails, which is something I feel is reprehensible because it is merely an aesthetic act that is permanent. It is one thing if it is for the practical use of a breed's use and is actually incorporated for the day to day life. However, if it is required just to be in the show and dogs like the ones in the video struggle, then we've put hundreds of dogs through procedures that are otherwise unnecessary. This also applies to dogs needing to remain intact. For a dog to be well behaved, docile and have hormones raging is asking a lot. We see Victoria mention all the time that intact dogs have certain negative behavioral tendencies that left unchecked can have severe ramifications. My last bit of discomfort with dogs shows (mainly in the US, since that is where I am from) is the somewhat propensity for certain breeds to get some favoritism from judges over and over again in the major shows each year. For example, I will see lots of poodles, Shitzhus, Fox Terriers, Golden Retrievers, Boxers and Dobermans selected to go to the final round at shows and eventually winning. It would be wonderful to see more variety when it comes to the Group Winners and the eventual Best in Show at a contest.
    That is my criticism of dog shows. I very much enjoyed this episode Victoria and will continue watching your content. I would love to see an episode detailing a pet's behavior at the vet and how it is affecting their overall health.

      There's no reason why show dogs have to be kept intact. At cat shows, there are separate breed classes for spayed/neutered pedigreed cats of all breeds. The altered cats do not compete against their intact brothers and sisters, but can win the same titles, even Best in Show, altered division. Why don't dog shows do the same? They are promoting breeding instead of discouraging it. Horse shows are the same as cat shows. Geldings can be shown, the same as stallions, and often both are in the same classes. It's high time dog shows change for the better, and allow same but separate classes for altered dogs as well. We have 4 grand champion Siamese cats, all neuters. (Jan Griffiths).

    • @missylarsson3517
      @missylarsson3517 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Marhesi You can try to motivate him more with food by not feeding him indoors. Bring food out with you on walks and make him work for it.
      Use a long line (maybe 20m) to practice calling back your dog. This will give the dog the illusion of being free but you actually have the ability to stop it if it tries to bolt. Important to always always offer the dog something valuable when he comes over (treats, praise etc). Don’t call your dog if you know you will fail (if the dog is distracted with something “important”). You want your dog to succeed as often as possible, so practice indoor first without distractions. If your dog loves running, use that as reward. Pet him and let him run free again as a reward whenever he listens. Don’t wait until you want to leave until calling your dog, then he will associate the call with “playtime over”.
      That being said huskies are quite independent and stubborn dogs so I am not surprised if you have to put in a lot of work into training.

      It earns wayyyyyyy for puppies over pups that are just bred by rookies (backyard breeders) people are gettin smart and not buying from them. They go to AKC breeder and showers and buy their "rejects", strong, true to bred pups raised by professions who pampered and loved them. When the pup had a slightly off ear set or color, it was sold to huge waiting lists of people who know breeding counts, and professionals are to be trusted. The pups that pass a test of measuring proportions, showy temperament, and good conformation to breed standards are kept a few more months. Breeder would love to keep all but chooses to sell or trade show quality to fellow breeders, or make pup available to waiting list (i.e. Can't use another boy).
      Girls that are show have 1,2, or 3 litters and are fixed and sold as pets. Mom's work s done. Pro breeders do not bred females after age 4 or 5, puppy mills breed mom twice a year until she dies. Who produces the best pups? Who deserves top dollar for lots of hard work?

      I would probably pop it down to the stereotype of small dogs needing less exercise. Like Shih Tzus needing 15 minutes twice a day as if they’re walked too much a day, it’s really bad for their spines.
      Not excusing it whatsoever, but that the only reason that I can think of.

      @SuperMathsBeaver 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ellashoey7501 I've never heard that about Shih Tzus before. I have a relative who was told something similar about their miniature dachshund but it still seems like too little, even for that breed.

    Starting from scratch - first show dog, first time handling - the first step is show classes - at least once a week - when your dog is 4 months old. The pup will learn HIS moves in no time but the handler takes longer to learn. If Rama's owner had done that someone would have told him that showing is about presentation and turning up to a show looking like you've just finished work on a building site is not going to help your dog's chances.
    Then you enter Open shows when your dog is 6 months old - they are the training ground for showing at Championship level. A show is a long day for a young pup so it's important to concentrate on your dog and be prepared to take him home as soon as it looks like it's getting too much for him. That means NOT keeping your exhausted pup at the show because you want to stay to the end to watch the Best In Show contest at the end!
    The competition isn't nearly as tough at Open shows so if you don't do well there chances are either you or your dog aren't Championship show material.
    Also Open shows are where you can meet and get to know the experts in showing your breed and SOME (not all are nice) will help you with advice on how to improve your performance.
    If you buy a pup that you want to show in the future most breeders will help and advise you too. (If they don't then don't buy from them - your breeder should be your first 'go to' for all matters relating to your dog)
    When you buy a show pup you join a family consisting of the breeder and all the other owners of dogs from that breeder. Sometimes the owners of dogs related to yours too!

    My wolf dog danced without treat enforcement. We danced a 4 square waltz . Paw in hand, arms around eachother's waists, step forward, step back, step left & step right. He stood nearly 6 foot on hind legs . He was 1/4 Dane, 3/4 Siberian Timber Wolf. When he came to the end of his life, the day he couldn't dance anymore, his hind legs had completely given out. He was ashamed to be alive , defecating & urinating on himself. Wheelbarrow dog, was the crude term. I knew it was time for the final act of mercy. He was the best guardian & companion I ever had. It's been 37 years, in my heart, it still feels like yesterday.

      I wish the judge would have shared what wasnt good about Rama. I thought his comment "I would have placed him 5th" I'm not recalling the exact quote, was not called for. Just made him look tacky.

      @@katmgeor In European shows the judge does a written report on every dog so you know what the judge did or didn't like about your dog. A much better system than the British one where they only do a write up on the first three dogs.

      You shouldn't allow your dog to stay standing for that long, it's not good for their backs and joints.
