VAX Platinum PowerMax Carpet Cleaner Review | The Carpenter's Daughter

  • Ever since I decided to dig up our driveway to lay gravel, and holes for fence posts, we've traipsed a LOT of mud in and dirtied our new carpets.
Sadly my old carpet cleaner broke, so in today's video, I show you how I bring my carpets back while reviewing a brand new Vax Platinum Powermax carpet cleaner. I'll also be comparing it to my old Bissell cleaner.
I also share some muddy carpet prevention tips at the end which I now know from our mistakes, but any extra tips are more than welcome in the comments!
*This is a PR sample which I only agreed to honestly review on my blog. However, as I like to use TH-cam to research products before buying them, it made sense to film it too for demonstration purposes.
Here's the Vax Platinum Powermax if you want to check it out:
    www.vax.co.uk/c...
Also, note the claim for carpets to be dry within 1 hour is under the quick setting, but I'm a whole hog girl and went for deep clean in this video.
    **This review is NOT sponsored.
    Here's my blogpost review too:
    thecarpentersda...
    Other products I used:
Dr Beckmann Carpet Stain Remover (MUCH cheaper in B&M) but not great on large areas:

I have a vax platinum. Fabulous machine. I had issues with it and vax exchanged it with no qualms. Really pleased with my machine and the customer service. Also, that spin scrub tool brings the stairs carpet up a treat! Really rejuvenated the pile.

Thank you!!! I don’t look forward to cleaning my carpets, ever. Mainly because I do it so seldom I can’t ever remember what goes where and it’s painful. But after your help, it’s really simple - thank you! My machine is new, used it once maybe twice before. Mislaid the manual. It’s it’s lovely weather this weekend, thought I’d give it a go. It is a good machine and going over the carpet slowly is definitely the way to use it. It is noisy but does make you feel great once the carpets are clean again 🎉the pre treatment solution is very good. Thank you

I just got one of these and it's great. I did have Vax rapid XL and it just wasn't doing the job, it picked up the dirt but the carpets still looked dirty. This new one lifts the carpet fibres and removes all the dirt. It's like walking on a new carpet again thumbs up to Vax.

Thanks for your insight as this is my first VAX carpet cleaner. Yes, I totally agree about sucking excess fibres too! Particularly dog hairs on the dressing table stool!

Nice, saw the advert on TV this morning. I want one. I have a Springer Spaniel that makes the place dirtier than when my kids were toddlers. I have the big old round Orange VAX already, but the new one take up less space and no dragging it around. The old one may get relegated to the shed and used for clearing block sinks and stuff and pumping out my small pond gradually, it will definitely get re-purposed for other things, not thrown away as it is only 2 years old.

I admire your "I can do this" attitude so much! I have to smile when I see u working on a project outdoors, I too have no workshop and also end up working in the garden, kitchen, living room, on the coffee table or wherever I can find a space. Here in South Africa we have many more sunny and warm days than u do, so I really feel for u when I see u working outside in the rain and cold 😢
Your videos are marvellously informative and well made, I watch them as much for the enjoyment as for the information gained!
I think people in England are much more into DIY home improvement than we are here and it shows in the greater array of tools and products that are available to u there.... just an observation.
    Cheers!

For anyone watching years later, cos these are still on sale, you don't just use this with the trigger pulled the whole time... that's why the carpet ends up drenched. Basically you pull the trigger to release the solution and/or water, then when you let go of the trigger it just sucks it back up. So you're meant to move forwards with the trigger pulled, then pull backwards over the same area with the trigger released.

Love the review. We had a Bissell also. We lent it out and when it came back it didn't work anymore. (Very sad). We have looked at many and this one seems really good compared to the ones we have looked at. One thing that we do is to clean the carpets every 6 months. We kept our carpet for 15 years before replacing just by keeping it clean. Also in high traffic areas we put down clear plastic runners and would replace them when they became dingy. When our kids were young and just learning to eat we put down a big sheet of plastic under their chair and side of the table, that way we could wipe up spills really easy and not destroy the carpet. We also always take our shoes off when we come in and we have a place at the door for everyone's shoes.

Gutting :( Carpet cleaners are great to have. In fact, when we bought our first camper, I got a 1k quote (no joke) to clean the carpets and upholstery in it, but it was in a terrible state... so I got my Bissell out for the day instead and it made such a difference.
I'm so relieved to have one again - Just got to make sure I don't misplace the bag of tools lol

Great review, my 5 year old Vax cleaner broke down today, so I was keen to replace it. Having watched your review I decided to give the VAX platinum a try. The Vax platinum is fantastic and works very well, I used it on the deep clean setting and 2 hours later the carpet is almost dry! Top 3 benefits for me: 1. It really does clean quite well 2. It has a rinse function 3. I can use it on anything! I tried it on a foot stool, Stairs, Armcahir and kitchen, it performed great in all areas. Okay top 3 areas where it didn't do so well; 1. It is heavy, it is like doing a workout 2. My old Vax used to leave little bits of fluff and dirt as I cleaned, this machine spits out so much of it 3. The machine comes with some attachements for doing stairs and funiture, getting the end attachment on and off the hose is a bit difficult. 4. I know, I said three things, the liquid is too expensive, I am tempted to use just water to wash the carpet.

Ok! 2nd try, 2nd area....much better..confidence is the answer. If you are cleaning top quality wool carpet 80/20 keep the hoover handy because you will experience lots of old pile and fluff. Uses a lot of water on Deep Clean, 15m2 of hall carpet used 12 litres of water but it seems to be drying quite quickly. After the wash I used the suction quite a lot, not just one up and one down more like one up with wash and 3 down with suction.
Cleaning up the machine after wasn't so bad this time, I used the hosepipe all over the business end and it looks like new.
So like the man said when asked "How do I get to Carnegie Hall?" the answer is "Practise man, practise!"
Cleaning solution VAX AAA+ is available at Argos, 2 units for £12.99 is a good buy.

I have the spot wash and you have to spray the treatment and really scrub the area and leave it again before extracting doing it a couple of times. I have a one power blade from vax which is a great hoover but the battery doesn’t last well. I have the spot wash which is absoultely amazing so I have been looking at this for larger areas

Bought this machine to replace my old vax carpet cleaner which I loved. I always hoover thoroughly before using the cleaner but same as Bill Hales, get tons of fluff spitting out from the brushes and have many times had to take it apart to clean the fluff out because it stops sucking up the water so easily. Had to unblock it after only the second use of it which is so frustrating as cleaning it requires unscrewing about 10 screws!! It does an ok job when it is working but not nearly as good as my old model and very expensive!

I've been toying between this and a Bissell, ever review I watch they have long pile fluffy carpets but mine aren't so I needed to see what the suction is like on short pile carpet like your hallway and I'm impressed with the results so I'm gonna get one of these now 😁

I just bought this and I wanted to see someone who has used it, so thank you for your review. I think I have bought a good carpet washer, I had a previous Vax model, the orange one lol....like so many of use that have this hoover, but the washing parts have now failed me, and the Vax is no longer good at cleaning my carpets. Hopefully the Vax Platinum will be my wonder hoover...wish me luck lol.

Thanks for your video. Ive never used a carpet washer before and I’ve just bought one of these and tried it for the first time today. It was straightforward to put together but I didn’t find the manual very useful as far as cleaning instructions are concerned. What is the rinse setting for. Are we supposed to rinse the carpet with only clean water after we have cleaned it because I thought you just shampooed then left it to dry which is what I’ve done so is this settings to do something else? I didn’t get a lot of water or soap suds either and the carpet didn’t feel very wet but I did use it on the quick clean setting as the carpet was not very dirty so maybe that’s why. I think it looks cleaner but it was hard to tell. I used about 60ml of cleaner in 1.5 litres of water. (I agree it would be helpful to have a proper measuring guide) I’m just not sure if I did it correctly. I didn’t get much dirty water in the bin either but it did pull up loads of fluff from the carpet even though I’d thoroughly vacuumed it before washing so I’m not sure if that might of stopped it from working properly by blocking the suction. It’s quite a new carpet. Also how often are you supposed to undo all those screws on the bottom to clean out that part or is it ok to just pick out all the fluff and bits with your fingers and not open it. It seems a lot of faffing about when the rest of the parts rinse out easily.

    • @TheCarpentersDaughterUK
      @TheCarpentersDaughterUK  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I must admit, I never entertained the rinse setting initially. But ever since watching Ibaisaic's TH-cam channel reviewing an older version, he said the rinse setting sucks up a lot more dirt, so will try it in the future.
I personally would try the rinse using the carpet shampoo solution as I have lots of older Bissell stuff still too, but it may very well work with the pretreatment solution where you can leave it for 5 to 10 minutes.
Also, I never used quick clean, but VAX have told me that's the setting that leaves your carpet dry within an hour. Maybe try once more using rinse then deep clean? Oooh.. not sure how often you're meant to cut the fluff away (I'm quite lazy at times lol) but I can imagine it's best to do after each use. And completely agree about it bringing up fluff etc! But if you clean your carpets say twice a year, I suppose it's probably not too much of a hardship... I really should clean the bottom properly now you've said that lol

Just used mine for the first time. I did vacuum clean to start with, then I used the per-spray. Difficult stains were not removed. I'll use my Karcher steamer to do that. Easy to fill and empty the tanks. Lots and lots of fluff ....although the area of carpet I test cleaned was only 10-12 square feet. My lounge is 24'x14' so I'm. tad worried about that! Still, my overall impression is not too bad.

My tip for carpet cleaning is remarkably straightforward
When you wash clothes, you give them a rinse, several times, and a lot of dirt comes out of rinsing.
same with carpets. Fill them chamber without solution and pass a few rinses on the carpet. You'd be surprised how much more dirt is sucked up.

The bottles of detergent state that it has to be diluted. Is this correct? Because if so then we shouldn't fill the detergent chamber with just pure solution.

Hi can I ask have you cleaned the area left once the roller brushes have been removed so you can rinse the brushes, I’ve just used mine for the first time and everything is clean now but I can’t leave the area left after the roller brushes have been removed, also how do you get the solution area clean as you can’t get to it to clean it out just flushing it isn’t helping

My son is 14 today and we still have a no shoes in the house rule and I just upgraded to this machine which I'll use for the first time today, so with all that,I still wash my carpets...but each to their own 🤷🏾‍♀️.

Used this for the first time today. Immense carpet fluff came up where we can't walk. Then realized no fluid coming out on Quick Clean. Book says try the clean water valve but that is ok. Tried it on vinyl floor and could only produce a third of the machine width fluid on quick clean so changed to deep clean and it came flooding out. Tried to get through to Vax help but the "support" page is currently unavailable ! Each slow traverse of the carpet produced tons of pile fluff which needed to be vacuumed before the next small section. I spent more time cleaning the fluff from the brushes and head than using the machine. Exhausted after cleaning only two thirds of a dining room where there is still a damp wool smell. The machine is extremely well constructed but wish I had practiced on some old carpet in the garage before tackling the top quality wool stuff indoors. Hope it gets better or it goes on Ebay.

Watch out for there very dodgy gear boxes, that cease up, my machine ceased up just after using it three times, After contacting the Vax company about the problem, the answer they gave me was “ buy another cleaner” so much for their after sales service. Not pleased with that as an answer, I gave the machine an honest review on the Vax site, my review disappeared, leaving only extremely good reviews that Vax had put up for reviews. The Vax carpet cleaner is not very good in its design, the gear box, needs redesigning, having said that they may have already done that, but I doubt it, Their dodgy gear box, needs a lot of work on it. Much like their VERY DODGY AFTER SALES SERVICE. If the gear box on these machines has not been improved, don’t go near a Vax Carpet cleaner. Try another make of carpet cleaner. I wrote this on its Vax site before, guess what, it disappeared, like my review, disappeared. I can’t stand dishonesty, in any form.

Yes, I thought the same. You will find, that you will only use your carpet cleaner, every six or seven months. After only three times using my cleaner, on just a 20 square metre living room carpet, the gear box, driving the five circular brushes ceased. I have been in heavy engineering for a number of years, and this gear box, was not up to the job. Although I do have a very good, all wool carpet.
This cleaner is made to look good, and may work a little longer, if you have cheap nylon carpets. You may get at to clean your carpet a couple of times more, than I was able to use my machine. I really would advise you to try a more robust cleaner, instead of one that just looks good.

i am most impressed by the cleaner, it was so simple to put together and worked a dream, little bit of tuft cam off the carpet but not to much, rinse is fantastic, and very little water remained on the carpet, cleaning was not as hard as i thought , very easy to manage and not to heavy to use, the after care was quite simple and easy to do, the flat floor i did try but need to do a larger area to get full feed back. in all delivery , packaging, everthing was really good, registering the product was a pain as they wanted proof of purchase ,and no camera to take photo, but got it done in the end. so really happy .. stairs next

    • @TheCarpentersDaughterUK

Sadly that's hard to say as I've never tried a cheap carpet cleaner. The first one I bought (Bissell) which I loved was well over £300 - that was quite a splash out for me at the time. The VAX one is at 299.99 but I think there's a £50 offer on at the moment.
I'd be interested to hear what people thought of cheaper models they owned. I'm not sure they all extract the dirty water, so would make sure it had that function at least, otherwise you can't see the results. Hope that helps!

    • @TheCarpentersDaughterUK
      @TheCarpentersDaughterUK  6 ปีที่แล้ว
