    Great series. This has always been my dream, to restore an old trailer. Too many people have said it was not worth it/too difficult/too time consuming. While this series has shown me that it is a lot of work, it now at least feels attainable. Also, there isn't another rig in the world that you will enjoy more than this one since it was brought back to life with your own sweat and determination. Keep up the good work and thank you for documenting the whole process, I know it had to have added hours to the overall project.

      Ryan Blake Thanks for the kind words. It has been a lot of work, and the filming takes a lot of extra time. The video aspect helps though too, because knowing people are watching keeps me motivated to finish. I'm glad you are enjoying the series.

      jokelanddotcom there's something special about the old trailers, if someone told me a year ago I'd be rebuilding a travel trailer I don't think I would've believed them! Glad you are enjoying the series.

    I am rebuilding a 1967 silver streak, when you said you had sticker shock on the price of plywood I could relate to that when I bought 3/4 in marine grade it was $74.00 per sheet. I was so nervous when I started cutting it. Keep up the good work, very cool

    Watching your videos have been so helpful. I have watched them all several times as I am trying to rebuild a 13 ft Yellowstone canned ham. It is smaller than yours, but it was rotten to the core. Lol. I hope to have something useable by the end of summer. We will see. Hard to find replacement items. The wheel wells are particularly in bad shape. You were fortunate with yours. Great job. I can't wait to see your finished product - and mine!

    Just binge watched all 8 parts - great job with videos and the trailer. You make it seem like even a tv-carpenter like me could take a stab. Looking forward to the next installment. One thing that surprised me is that the bottom of the floor is exposed and in contact with rainwater, salt, whatever is going to get kicked up on it. I would have thought it was protected somehow.

    • @jenniesgarage
      @jenniesgarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael Oxman Hi, thanks for watching the videos! I was really surprised about the floor framing being exposed too, it seemed really susceptible to the elements. It's interesting though, that the floor joists and plywood that were out in the open (not against the rotten walls) were the only wood in the entire trailer that weren't damaged by rot!

    • @algalkin

      Could it be they were PT?
      Also, why didn't you use marine grade ply for the flooring? Since it's exposed and all?

    Looks so much better with a new floor, the foundation is secured lol :-)
    And jennie was performing a carpenters version of the statue of liberty, not the singing ones, although im sure it sometimes feels like "We've Only Just Begun", sorry thats so so bad lol.
    The shasta is back to its early days, its a youngster in old clothing, you have done an amazing job mate, no jokes, im serious, i wished i had a tenth of your abilitys, im saying your brilliant lol.
    The wiring makes me laugh, rip it all out and start again, you decide what power goes where, sockets and light positions are unlimited.
    The back lights are just a trailer board and multicore caravan wire, simple as falling off a log, although i havnt tryed that rather odd movement :D

    • @jenniesgarage
      @jenniesgarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      zx8401ztv Thanks for the compliments, The Mrs. does look a little like Karen, but she's not my sister! It is starting to shape up into something, although it astounds me how something so small can absorb so much time and money. Yeah that electrical is a mess. Luckily I have a lot of scrap wire laying around that I can hopefully patch together into something that works.

    I did an almost frame up restoration last year. Wish I had taken it completely down to the frame. Also wish I had insisted that all my DC wiring was brand new and run fresh. I had all skin off, insulated and now I need to take the back end jrails off and skin panels to fix my running lights. I have stop and signal but no running. My clearance lights are hooked direct to my tongue battery on a toggle switch. It is a serious PITA.

      Daniel D Actually , for the amount of work and material that trailer needed, I would have built a new trailer on the old frame. I think he just got in over his head money wise and had to finish it to save face.

    • @commanderwhite12
      @commanderwhite12 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mazda rx7 it's cheaper then you think to rebuild a old trailer. yes it can be pricey but think of it this way. once it's done it will out last any new trailer or rv ever made. the new ones are crap and made even worse. there's vids of trailers from 2004 2006 and such that are water damaged heavily already.
      I just got and am in the process of moving a 1983 coachmen 21 1/2 travel travel I got for FREE to my storage unit. it's gonna need new front and back walls. some floor and maybe on side wall and the ceiling. only gonna remove what must be taken off and save anything I can that is useable me and my gf wanna use it to travel and or live in. first thing I gotta get new tires which are a given..if it's a total lose I'll made a flatbed.

    • @GoofieNewfie69
      @GoofieNewfie69 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Water damage on trailers happens because people and manufactures use RV or home sealants. If I want to keep water out, I used tried and proven Marine sealants, usually 5200 or 4200 depending on how permanent the seal. Sikaflex 291 is very good too. the sealant is good for fishing boats in the North Atlantic and the Bering Sea, a trailer is child's play. If I don't mind leaks, I use RV or home sealants.

    • @commanderwhite12
      @commanderwhite12 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to use that stuff. Got any other tips?
      I'm nervous about it but it's worth a shot. It's gnarly but I've seen worse that ppl have built...I won't know till I've got it to a place I can tear it apart. Maybe I'll have a big cookout and get a bunch of friends over to help rebuild.

      +Paul Samarin It depends on the floor joist spacing. for mine 1/2" was fine, but if you have more span you'll need thicker plywood. Look up subfloor calculations for houses and you'll find the parameters. Good luck on the project.

    Wouldn't it be better to repaint the metal floor supports to prevent corrosion.

    Why would you ever leave bare exposed plywood underneath the trailer without treating it first before you install the floor. Just saying

    So, why didn't you sand and seal the old joists or metal frame? I should think that the undercarriage is most important. CAUTION: Do not install fibre glass insulation without a respirator. Why not new insulation? The old could contain spores of mould. Are you stupid? I know you aren't, so why not replace everything, sandblast and powder coat the metal undercarriage, and replace the old axel?
