    This animatic misses a really important thing happening in Luck Runs Out which is that Eurylochus is slowly getting the crew to agree with him, signified by the steady increase in background vocals. This is why Odysseus pulls him aside, he feels like hes losing control of the crew.

    • @disableddragonborn
      @disableddragonborn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +81

      With all the mistakes Odysseus has made that cost lives, I don't think Eurylochus is getting people to agree with him, he's giving them the courage to voice their concerns about Odysseus's competence as a captain. I think of it as like in the 2009 Star Trek. Spock stepped down after losing his temper because he knew that compromised everyone. (I haven't watched the film since DVDs were still common, so I can't remember all of the details.)

    • @yuukinoyuki9064
      @yuukinoyuki9064 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +43

      @@disableddragonborn It's a bit of both, I think. They'd been blindly following Oddysseus until this point so even when things go wrong part of them wonders if he won't find a way to get them out since he had actually managed to make it out of most things at this point. So Eurylochus is speaking on behalf of the voiceless crew, but the act of speaking also makes the crew stop and ponder and slowly take his side.
      Star Trek 2009 is maybe not the best example, though, cause the bridge didn't actually doubt Spock or his calls. It was really only Kirk who was at odds with Spock. And Spock stepped down because he was emotionally compromised, which Oddysseus isn't any more compromised than the rest of his crew. Oddysseus is closer to Kirk, actually, convinced he can always find a way out of any no-win scenario.

    In Odiseus's defense, so far it's not so bad. Yes, they lost a few men to the cyclops, but there are still 550+ people under his command. It's a tragedy, but losing less the 10% of his team in 10+ years and a freaking war is tehnicaly considered a win so far. Plus, I don't think anyone else knows that he lost Athena's support

      I think thats kinda WHY it got so out of hand. Because like you said these are the first real casualties that are of the men under his command, which is also part of the reason athena was so ticked. She warned him that he needed to not let down his guard just yet, and when he did and it ended badly odysseyes doubled down by continuing to make more emotion driven mistakes, driving her to pull back. About trumpets...
    Mr. Jalapeño often links certain instruments with certain characters.
    For example:
    Odysseus' instrument is a guitar. Depending on what Ody is doing it's a different type. Acoustic, romantic guitar is for whenever he sings about his wife, electric guitar comes int play when he is fighting or getting ready for attack (like in Remember Them, or Horse and the Infant)
    Polities' was a cheery-sounding kalimba
    Athena's is piano and clock-like ticking.
    Eurylochous' isn't an instrument, but the voices of the rest of the crew accompany his singing.
    And so on and so on
    That being said trumpets belong to someone as well. And that also points that certain character is also present during "Storm".

    To be fair on the point of Odysseus telling Eurylachus that he can't be sowing seeds of doubt, from what I remember that's like one of the most important things for a crew on the seas. Planting doubt will lead to hesitation and possibly even a mutiny, and that could lead to all of them dying.

    Just a general note about how many people seem to just not catch that Odysseus was acting nice in front of the crew before realising this argument had gone on for too long and essentially went "i need you to stfu in front of the crew, mkay?" That is not the problem. The problem is that said "second on command" was trying to overrule the captain while basically saying,in front of the crew,that what they had was due to luck. That talk can lessen the trust in the words of the captain(as we see a bit later when they open the bag,even though he said not to) aswell as fuck with moralle. So it was more of a "please bring this up in private and not where our men are listening,because believe it or not,i know what i am doing and i know that creating a divide is smth we DO NOT WANT" than just a "stfu in front of the others cus im boss"

    In addition to all of the comment pointing out Eurylochus choosing to have this confrontation in front of the crew, undermining Odysseus in front of the crew (as valid as his points may have been at least to consider), it's interesting to go back all the way to the Troy Saga to realize HOW many times he questioned or outright objected to Odysseus' orders and plans, oftentimes in the hearing of at least some of the crew members. hence 'I can't have you disagreeing each route'. Because he practically HAS been, which really undermines Ody's ability to lead and probably rankles him enough to not listen to words of caution that arguably he should have. Eurylochus actually questions Odysseus quite a bit in the adventure, if you look for it...

  • @AirQuotes2962
    @AirQuotes2962 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +129

    If I'm being honest, the Ocean Saga is probably my favorite of the sagas so far. I really like Storm, Keep Your Friends Close and Ruthlessness, and Luck Runs Out is super catchy if a little less important. If I have one thing to say, it is that when you react to Keep Your Friends Close PLEASE do the Gigi one on TH-cam!
    Edit: Also, you seemed confused by the harpoons bit at the end of Storm. Basically, the idea is that with all the ropes connected to the harpoons, they could use the floating island as a reverse anchor to pull them out of the Storm, as explained by Jorge in his summary of the Ocean Saga. All the harpoons hit, and they essentially tied the ships to the floating island, allowing them to be held still and pulled out of the storm temporarily.
    Edit 2: And honestly, Odysseus turning to the wind god (goddess? It's unclear) for help actually makes a lot of sense. They need some kind of godly protection from the storm, and Athena isn't going to help them anymore. So literally asking the god of one of the key components of storms for help makes a bit of sense. He's not becoming a full disciple of Aeolus, just asking for some help.
    Edit 3: Okay, last point, but I found it interesting you were so on the side of Euryloches in "Luck Runs Out". I found myself more on the side of Odysseus in that song; they're going to die in the storm and asking the wind god for help is pretty much their only way to survive. But Euryloches is suddenly raising all these concerns IN FRONT OF THE MEN. Like, if he was actually talking to Odysseus in private the whole time, that's one thing, that would be him just looking out for a friend. But an image of unity is vital in leadership, and Euryloches actively started to question that in public, in front of all the men. That was not a good call on Euryloches's part, unless he wanted to stir up some kind of division among the crew, which is something they can't afford. Odysseus is his friend, but he is also his captain and his leader.
    And yeah, I'm not sure why the animator had Odysseus be ALL OVER Euryloches in that song. Like dude, you're supposed to be married!

Considering how this version of the story is written, the song is much more tense, Odysseus is not being tender with Eurylochus, he is losing his patience and acting nice in front of the crew only to save face. Then when it’s just the two of them starting with “I can’t have you planting seeds of doubt” it’s meant to be directly confrontational. Not pleading and soft like the animation. The animatic is losing some kind of important stuff. Like, at the last, Odysseus pulls Eurylochus in privet so that they can talk. But he kind of says his lines, in a slightly threatening way. 😠

  • @taurbeer

    While Lampyrcy is an excellent animatic maker, I suspect that the specifics of their animatic of Luck Runs Out got you a bit more confused than necessary. Eurylochus is meant to be backed by the crew of the ship (not spirits like in the animatic), his side in the song kind of being a mirror of *every* person of the crew. This is meant as setup for not just the upcoming song, but also just to show that the crew are really starting to doubt Odysseus.

    It's the rest of Odysseus' crew! (As you realized later😅)
    Jay confirmed this when he was talking about how backing vocals differs from humans as opposed to the gods.
    It's true that this song is mainly about Eurylochus confronting Odysseus about how reckless he's being, but in general as second-in-command he represents the doubts and fears of all of his men, acting as their voice when they otherwise wouldn't have the rank to speak so frankly to their captain about these things. Plus, if you think about it, on a ship there wouldn't be many places they could speak in private without other people around aside from one of their private rooms, as we saw at the end of the song.
    Odysseus is under the impression that the crew hearing Eurylochus question him will sow seeds of doubt, not realizing that Eurylochus is only asking because all of them already have doubts that they'd like for him to address to ease their minds. At least that's my interpretation of it!

    • @JunieBug

      I always thought it was the rule of military: you don't question the captain in front of the crew, because that plants "seeds of doubt" in the crew, because they don't know if they're doing the right thing when the two top ranks have conflicting opinions. In a life or death situation, that kind of uncertainty will often lead to lives lost.

    Most of the characters have an instrument or style that represents them, so that when they appear in a song the audience can pick up on them, even if only subtly: Athena = piano, Odysseus = guitar, Divine beings = more electric music than not. Regarding Eurylochus, however; he doesn't have an instrument exclusive to him, but the echoing voices of the rest of the crew, because, as second in command, he is literally the voice and simmering opinions of the men under Odysseus' command.

    So I rambled for ages on this vid already but I'm still thinking about the disagreement between Ody and Eury about his course of action. We know that hope has the power to keep us going through things we might otherwise not be able to survive (as in, we've studied it, it's not just anecdotal) so Ody might actually have a perfectly good point. "I can't have you planting seeds of doubt (...) we'll all die" because that's very literally true. Even ignoring the potential for mutiny or accidents caused by people doubting him and not moving out of the way of danger, for instance, there's still the chance that simply doubting their survival could be what kills them. The mind is a powerful thing, and Ody does prove that he's very capable more often than not, just think about how things could have gone if Eury hadn't trusted him in Remember Them and had run when the other cyclops's came to Polyphemus' aid.
    But at the same time, Ody is arrogant, and he's fallible. He might be right more than he's wrong, but he can be wrong, too. Needing to keep the hopes of the crew up isn't the same as neglecting Eury's concerns, he's the second in command for a reason and he has some valid points. "You need to stfu in front of the men" is a valid sentiment, but they're talking privately at that point - the needs to be prepared to listen to other sources of information if he wants to continue surviving (*cough* Athena *cough cough* shouldn't have left 'phemus alive *achoo*)

Religions committing horrible crimes to destroy sin, people committing suicide or murder for a sense of honour, the nazi purist beliefs... were those seeds all sown in fertile soil? "Seeds only grow in fertile soil" is a nice bumper sticker, but that's about it, and the whole "oh but not everyone's on one ship" thing seems somewhat irrelevant if you've heard literally the next song in the saga.

    Oddy pulling rank is an important thing for the crew. Having options suggest is fine, presenting possibilities is good. But once Oddy has made a choice he needs his crew to follow those orders. 500+ crewmen following the same plan, even if its not the best plan, will still work better than 500+ people all doing their own plan.
    The best example of something like this I can think of is from Star Trek TNG when Data and Worf are acting as CO and 2nd in command. They have a brilliant little bit of dialogue which is very reminiscent of Luck Runs Out in terms of theme.

    24:10 - I know why you might not like what Odysseus was saying, but... as a captain, he's absolutely 100% correct. Eurylochus was creating doubt, confusion, and fear in the crew. Had ol' Eury just pulled him aside and spoken with him in private? I think it would have gone over much, much better. But instead, he took Ody to task in public and, worse, in front of the crew, and Ody had to nip that immediately, or else a mutiny could ensue. And while Ody *had* made mistakes, they were honestly comparatively few, and his points were very solid: he led 600 dudes to war, and only a few died... but only *after* the war, and exclusively to a monster they didn't know about and couldn't understand in advance.
    And while Ody *has* made mistakes (rejecting/abandoning Athena, losing a few people to the cyclops, telling the cyclops his name^, and trusting the Lotus Eaters about the cave, those mistakes are over-all extremely minor, especially from the perspective of what the crew have seen. From what they've seen, Ody: stumbled into a lotus-infested island, navigated the weird people there, lost a few people to a weird monster, but also acquired food for every man on the ship, and successfully led them without losing anyone in a ten-year war that he had personally allowed them to have victory in. He, personally, successfully fed (nearly) six hundred men without raiding a city, and only losing a few people to a weird monster no one could have predicted.
    {note: in the original Odyssey, he'd had to actively rescue his crew from the lotus they'd become addicted to as well; he physically shoved them back onto the boat, if I recall.}
    Effectively, his mistakes were minor, and while Eury has a *tad* more insight, he's basically undermining the captain for nothing. We can grasp the depths of Ody's mistakes, but the crew really haven't seen it, yet. And, heck, he even led them to successfully latch onto a literal floating island. So that's cool... and weird. And it's the weird part that's freaking out the crew.
    ^ It isn't clear how (though it's hinted at; I won't spoil how, at present, but there are musical cues hidden in The Storm) that revealing his name to the cyclops was foolish.

    • @Tacticslion
      @Tacticslion 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Taken his advice to heart, instead of basically saying "I hear you, but I'm doing the thing, and stop being so negative, you're making me look bad" (and yes, I am exaggerating a bit here). They may be brothers in law but this is directly undercutting him in front of his crew despite being his second in command. And he is getting people on his side. You have a great ear, my friend. Without spoiling, the 'musical queue' around 8:16 you picked up on does have a name in the show. It is called "the danger theme". Those particular series of notes appear anytime characters are in direct danger and change instruments constantly. It has and will probably continue to appear throughout the show.
    It gives us the audience info that characters may not have. For example, it is noticeably missing from the lotus eaters and Full Speed ahead. Keep an ear out for it because I am still noticing it in new places I didn't before. Try to find how many times it shows up previously and slight spoiler.....
    Ruthless has probably the most unique use of it.

    I just wanted to mention this now before I forget later:
    Odysseus is the whole reason for the war and he never wanted to be there. At Helen's pick the groom ceremony, her father was nervous about picking anyone, because it would make everyone else mad and everyone there including him is a king. Odysseus (a king) was also there as a suitor and said that if the king puts in a good word with Penelope's father, he will tell him a plan. The plan is that everyone there swears that if anyone tries to mess up the marriage, they all go to war to defend it. Mutually Assured Destruction really. They go through with it, and Helen gets married to the king of Troy.
    Years later, Helen is kidnapped to Troy and everyone is called to sack Troy to get Helen back for her husband. Odysseus at this point has married Penelope and Telemachus is an infant.
    Odysseus tries to dodge the draft because he doesn't want to leave his wife and newborn son. So, he acts crazy and starts losing his field full of crops in the wrong season and salting his fields. When the brother of Helen's husband gets there, to get Odysseus to the fight, to get him to give up the act, he throws Telemachus from Penelope's arms in front of the plow, causing Odysseus to swerve and crash trying not to kill his son. This proves he isn't crazy and gets dragged to war.
    The Trojan war then takes 10-12 years and then he starts trying to make his way back to the son he hasn't seen as anything but an infant and his wife.
    Also, in an unrelated note, if you are the second in command, you are allowed to disagree with your boss in private, but not in public. You have to show a unified front to the crew or things can go very badly. Mutiny is a possibility.

      I mean, sometimes a mutiny is necessary. If the captain keeps making choices that are getting the crew killed, he is unfit to lead.

      @@disableddragonborn Except none of the choices Odysseus has made up to this point have gotten anyone killed. They've lost seven men out of six hundred in ten years, to the Cyclops. I guess you could argue that was his fault for not divining somehow that the sheep belonged to a monster, but even then he managed to keep the casualties to a minimum by thinking on his feet, and they still got what they went there to get (the food). If the public questioning had started after Poseidon wipes out most of the fleet I would have nothing to say, but at this point? Yeah, that was a bad call. Hell, Poseidon wouldn't even have caught them before they arrived to Ithaca if the crew had not decided to open the bag against orders. Odysseus is by no means a perfect leader, but the only truly bad choice he makes in the Odyssey is revealing his name to the Cyclops. Every other disaster is the consequence of his crew being idiots and going against orders.

    The Back vocals whenever Eurylochus sings is he's " instrument " because all the characters have one. Example Odysseuss is guitar(Electric)

    Fun fact, pretty much every named character has an instrument motif. Odysseus is a guitar. any guitar. which is why electric guitars and different kinds of guitars can be heard when he is doing his whole things. Athena’s was a piano as well as the metronome or clock ticking.
    No one else spoil any others. I know the others, but he hasn’t gotten to that point.

    It's not technically next but ima just make a suggestion, whenever you do an animatic for puppeteer, Gigi and ximena's just dropped and they're super pretty, i have a hard time picking now that I've seen both
    Also because of one song that was cut (your light) alot of people actually look at Odysseus and Polites and have the "history will say they were roommates" reaction xD

  • @paleobolt8069

    I'd highly suggest that when you get to Ruthlessness you watch either Anniflamma's or Gigi's animatic, and when you get to Puppeteer you watch Gigi's animatic (That will probably also include any more animatics she releases for the Circe saga by the time you get to it.)

    When you eventually get to it could I recommend Gigi’s animatic for ‘puppeteer’ during the Circe saga

    When Odysseus pulls him aside I feel like its less of a "Hey keep your doubts to yourself and shut up" and more of a "Youre my second in command. I cant have you questioning me and arguing with my every point in front of the entire crew. If you have doubts, talk to me in private instead of sowing discord amongst the crew"

    Don't apologise for anything, Mortius! This reaction was hilarious and super entertaining and I loved every moment of it! Also Odysseus is basically just Alexander Hamilton from a different era

    21:50 I know it's already been explained since I came in kind of late on this. Let's add on to the explanation. Eurylochus being the voice of the crew he gets the backing vocals, which means this conversation that he's having with his captain that should be private is being said in front of everyone on deck. He doesn't mean to, but he's building this distrust between the captain and the crew and in the next song that distrust hurts the crew.

    the melody you are referencing during Storm is a motif Mr. Jalapeño uses multiple times in Epic and it's supposed to signal danger being near.

    I think the background voices are still the crew. A second in command (on a ship) is usually the bridge between the crew and the captain. The crew brings their grievances to the first mate. not the captain. So I think in this instance Eurylochus is essentially also parroting the concerns of the crew as well as his own.

  • @verybadvisuals

    Okay so I may not be the best one to explain this but if you haven't noticed throughout the musical Jay uses motifs an example being the danger is nearby motif(it's the notes of the introduction to Ruthlessness, uou know the people screaming poseidon, well they are singing specific notes which is the danger is nearby motif). So I'm pretty sure when you thought that something is familiar it was one of the shows motifs(I may be wrong).
