- We lucked into our very first bottle of Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, but will this unicorn whiskey live up to our expectations? We were going to save this bottle for a special occasion, but @slbdrinks review made us reconsider. We had to find out for ourselves just how this bourbon stands up to some delicious competition. We put Old Forester Birthday Bourbon 2023 release to the test against two of our favorite, more pedestrian Old Forester bourbons: Whiskey Row 1910 Old Fine Whiskey and Old Forester Statesman. So I can stop yearning for the OFBB, have not heard "fantastic" reviews.
Birthday is a little outside my price comfort, but I almost picked up the Statesman today. Just didn’t know what to expect.
So, maybe not $170 worth of "interesting"?
I have the 2002 version unopened, is that worth anything?
We were fortunate enough to win the 22 version from the total wine lottery... it was truly a special pour! from all the reviews i have seen of this one, its a common theme that it was "oaky" so thats too bad. hopefully some air and time turn it into that special bottle you were excited for!
Blinds are the best. 15-20 years ago, I could pick up OF Birthday Bourbon on the shelf for $45 any day of the week. 🥃
Lol no you couldn’t. First it definitely wasn’t $45 on its first release. Second they put out like 20,000 bottles max of the birthday bourbon every year. So even if it was $45 you absolutely couldn’t pick it up “any day of the week” stop lying

My Rockford, Illinois Woodman’s had Birthday Bourbon on its normal shelves and was not allocated 15 - 20 years ago. Bought many bottles back then

I've never had Statesman, and I've only had a sample of a previous year's Birthday Bourbon (in Kurt's basement bar), but 1910 is my jam, too. In fact, replacing the one I killed not too long ago has been my only purchase in October (... so far).
So glad you liked it! I am in complete agreement there is a lot of oak but not off putting.
By the way, I am stealing that Old Foresty note!! 😅

The 2021 OFBB was great. I enjoyed the 2022, but not to its status. I have not heard great things about 2023. 2019 was my fave OFBB. I have heard that 2018 was even better, but haven’t tried it.
Everyday is a special occasion...so drink up!!! Had 2022 Birthday when down in Louisville earlier this year...that one was amazing!
OF in general to me is not great, but the 1910 is about the only one I find drinkable. The 86 to me is so alcohol forward I can't take it. I've had a Birthday Bourbon sample, not sure of the year, but it was oaky enough to be practically undrinkable. It was close to a drain pour yet about $1000 in price. Absolute no.
Nice matchup guys! Did you say $170? Wow, haven't seen it for less than $1000 in NY. I've never tried one but feels like the recent rels aren't on par w the past. I know it's much proofier but would've been fun if you included a SiB Brl Str as a premium alternative. Cheers!

I purchased tha Statesman bottle quite a while back. And though a bit pricey, it was not selling well at my local liquor emporium & I believe it was marked down to $40. I bit tha hook & found ah distinct powdered sugar note in tha dram and was pleasantly surprised at how well my impulse purchase turned out. I wouldn't repeat tha bottle, but always have the O.F. 100 in multiples on my liquor shelf. A bargain bottle whose price has risen considerably this year in my market. Keep it up & I'll be switching gears back to W.T 101. Another scintillating rock star in the bourbon low budget arena. Will allow tha gladiators to duke it out and in tha meantime, it's past due for another sip or nip as one would have it ... Cheers ya all!

I personally love the 1910, it's one of my favorite all-time. Have not tried any Birthday Bourbon, but these results are what I would expect for myself. I'm in love with the flavor profile of 1910.
OF 100 is a good budget pour.
I tend to lean to OF 1920.
1910 can be a bit sweet for my pallette.

Well you guys just made me sad. Tried chasing this for 3 years never got one and I’m an OF fanatic. 😢. I’m feeling a lot of the new juice isn’t holding up to previous years , probably from the demand is what I’m thinking 🤷♂️

I didn't really recall hearing much about the lottery for this bottle this year. By the time it crossed my mind, it was over. Glad to hear it seems I didn't miss out on anything...though I don't win those things anyways so there is that :) But that is fine...trying to store up all my luck for advent!! Cool blind...nice to know I'd probably be just as delighted with the 1910, if not more.
Maybe we should have blended the Statesman and 1910. Probably not.
