It doesn’t. 😉 It does, however, simulate the same benefits (for us, with our soil type) that lowering the pH does. When you have high alkaline soil (high pH) it binds up nutrients in your soil. So while there may be nutrients like iron, for example, in your soil, it is bound up by the alkalinity and can't be used by your plants. When you add gypsum to the soil it helps condition the soil and unlock those nutrients, making them available to your plants, which is one of the benefits of lowering the pH. Please wear a mask when spreading that gypsum especially. I'm a drywall taper and gypsum dust is very very bad for your lungs, I wear a p100 when sanding or working in a dusty situation. You can see it billowing in the air, and driving right through can cause issues later in life. No construction worker ever says they wish they'd worn a mask less! That said I loved the video, all the takes was hilarious and Benjamin searching for strawberries is so sweet.. also got to see Russel, how does he always seem to know where the camera is pointing?

Nice!! I saw in a recent Gardner’s Supply catalog suggestions for lawn alternatives- creating “a pollinator-perfect lawn” as they put it. One suggestion they have is planting a “mowable meadow” - a “mix of clovers, creeping thyme, and other low growing flowers with grass”. Maybe something like this would work for those who have lost their lawn. ☺️

I have never fertilized by lawns on a regular basis. Once in great while I apply manure or maybe a liquid fertilizer, but most years it struggles along with nothing. I have just started fertilizing my flower beds on a monthly basis and the results are fantastic. The husband of my best friend told men "Fertilizer is like vitamins for your plants." I think I will start being nicer to my lawns. I also love a beautiful garden full of colorful flowers and and a patch of lush green lawn in the middle to give a flat space for the eye to relax.
My hubby is the grass guy too. He heard the video start and told me to throw it up on the TV. We sat with our coffee, watching Laura and Aaron on the big screen. He is now looking for gypsum!! Thank you so much for speaking his language! He loves his grass!!

Grass is a plant too. I was happy to hear you say that. I feel the same. My lawn has been a battle since I moved into my home. Working with Builder Quality Grass Seed is truly a challenge. I've had to slowly weed out the rye grass and reseed with Kentucky Blue. Its been a project to say the least. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Benjamin is getting so big. 💗🌻💗🌻

There is no such thing as a “quick project” for me in the garden, EVER! I always seem to have some malfunction, get in over my head, or end up doing something completely different. 🤣🤣 Benjamin is so precious! Thank you for the information. I have a small front yard that has a lot of weeds mixed in with the grass. I just keep it watered and mowed. The thought of using fertilizer has always turned me off. When Benjamin offered you a strawberry, I melted. He's at that wonderful age where everything he says and does is so precious you just want to stop time. He's living his best life, riding shotgun while mom whips around the grass like an Indy driver. I totally agree with you, Laura, about the value of grass. All my favorite gardens have it. You guys are sooo cute! Besides gardening advice, you show an example of family teamwork and gentle discipline. Benjamin is SUCH a boy. He could care less about the smell of lavender when there is a lawn tractor nearby! I had 7 brothers and 4 boys, so I know! After watching this, I may give lawn improvement a place in my to-do list.

I love the way Benjamin just shoved the strawberries in his mouth. That's so cute. Next year I'm doing strawberries in some pots. We aren't allowed to plant because of the community office mows all the grass. They are lazy, don't want to mow around things.. I do everything in pots & keep most on edge of patio. Mary
My lawns were awful. There was moss and weeds and chafer beetle grubs. This spring a landscaper came in. He aerated, spread seed and fertilized. After three weeks the new grass was two feet high. Now, after three mowings the lawns are lush and lovely. A ruined lawn can be easily restored. I had even considered taring it all up and get the sod people to replace it. If I had known how easy it was I would have done it myself!

Thank you for the information. I have a small front yard that has a lot of weeds mixed in with the grass. I just keep it watered and mowed. The thought of using fertilizer has always turned me off. You are changing my mind. Always great to see Benjamin in the videos. Watching him enjoy your garden is a pleasure.
When Benjamin offered you a strawberry, I melted. He's at that wonderful age where everything he says and does is so precious you just want to stop time. He's living his best life, riding shotgun while mom whips around the grass like an Indy driver.

You guys are sooo cute! Besides gardening advice, you show an example of family teamwork and gentle discipline. Benjamin is SUCH a boy. He could care less about the smell of lavender when there is a lawn tractor nearby! I had 7 brothers and 4 boys, so I know! After watching this, I may give lawn improvement a place in my to-do list.
Love that Benjamin is part of the project. Looks like he was doing his version of telling us which flowers he was walking by, he will have his own show in no time.

I love the way Benjamin just shoved the strawberries in his mouth. That's so cute. Next year I'm doing strawberries in some pots. We aren't allowed to plant because of the community office mows all the grass. They are lazy, don't want to mow around things.. I do everything in pots & keep most on edge of patio.

Nice lawn. You could use the gator to drop off the bags where you typically need to refill. Then use you lawn tractor to spread it.
My lawns were awful. There was moss and weeds and chafer beetle grubs. This spring a landscaper came in. He aerated, spread seed and fertilized. After three weeks the new grass was two feet high. Now, after three mowings the lawns are lush and lovely. A ruined lawn can be easily restored. I had even considered taring it all up and get the sod people to replace it. If I had known how easy it was I would have done it myself!
