Good job Jeff. My hay haulers are N14 boys. That's all they run. The boss of the outfit told me that the red top N14s are the ones that you want. Years ago, I mechaniced at the county road department shop and we got 3 green Freightliner day cabs for belly dump work. They all had N14s with "Spinner" brand oil centrifuge filters on them. They did a fair job of getting the heavy contaminates out of the oil. They work on a slip stream system .
I've always believed in fixing what you have- instead of finding something used and then fixing it... You know what you have worked before! And smart folks realize they don't know everything-- and ask the intelligent questions to learn more!
My guess on the three batteries is it came from a warm climate and they cut corners and just used 3 instead of 4. Pretty common in warm places cutting corners if the truck stays in that area.
Those batteries are Interstates and came with Petey when I got it. I robbed one for another machine (an 8" stationary irrigation pump powered by a 12 Valve Cummins) and threw that Excide in Petey that I bought for the pump. Just never switched Um' back around.. Yeah, mis-matched I know but back then Jerry Brown sat in Gavin's office and the shit show by the EPA of forcing us to sell perfectly good trucks was well under way!!
Hey Jeff great video as always. On your batter set you can purchase a buzz bar that will go on the studs of the batteries and connect all three together Volvo uses them. Check with fleet pride or Napa either should be able to get them. Also, on your cables where they go through the round hole on the back of the batter box be sure to check them very well for signs of wear through the insulation. Pete’s and Kenworth’s are notorious for cutting through the insulation and starting fires right there in that spot. Rock on Brother Jeff will win in the end.
Many years ago I helped a friend with a worn out NTA-400 an things were pretty much similar to this situation. We contacted Cummins Re-Con and gave them the CPL number and got a great quote on a factory reman with factory warranty. Thats the way we went. Not sure if they still have that program or not. Only take a phone call to check er out. My last three KW's I ordered with 3 group 31 batteries mostly for weight saving. Running out of BC I ran a lot of north stuff right up to the Yukon...never had a problem battery wise anytime of the year.
I have 3 N-14’s 3-ISX’. I wish I had 6 off them. They are so economical to own and repair. If I burn up an N-14 I know I won’t be writing a check for $55k in three weeks to do it right.
OK Jeff great video. I'm a Detroit series 60 guy but i have driven plenty of Cummins powered trucks and they are just as good maybe use a little less fuel. I have driven Cats as well but mainly in machinery applications. I'd do up that engine for just the same reasons you say and chuck it straight back into that truck. To put anything else in would be an unnecessary and expensive exercise when your critics have to consider the purpose of this vehicle, as a money making fleet unit and nothing more. p.s. You're Not Stupid. Older Guys Rock!
Back in the 80s when I was at a truck dealership the L.A. Times bought about a dozen new Volvos with N14s. They had taken delivery of a few when it was discovered the engines didn't have Calif CARB compliant CPLs. Turns out the only difference was injection timing. We had to go into brand new engines and re-time the injection timing. It was nice working on clean stuff but what a pain in the ass for such a small difference in "emissions". CARB definitely sucks- then and even more now.
Jeff, you always have well thought out reasons for what you do. Makes sense to rebuild the N14. Shows what lack of maintenance can do though. But tell me you didn’t pull the truck out with a four by four! I thought it was going to chase you to the next county!
I was told by a Cummins mechanic that you can run the same thickness gaskets on the rocker boxes as long as you’re using the same grind camshaft. I did it on my big cam and it runs great.
Well poo buckets 💩 🪣 Yeah I agree I’d rebuild the Cummins and you don’t have refit to a Cat engine. It’s all bolt back on 😅 and that is enough refitting. Peaty will be back on his feet 👣 in no time. Ready to go back to burning smoke and making work. 👍👍👍 Good to see Mr Griffey
Excellent approach Jeff!! I certainly would recommend a “Cherry Standard/Standard” Crank , that has been “Rockwell “ Hardness Tested, myself!! Than you know for sure, but I know that you are probably planning that already!!
Cam Grinders in Seattle is an excellent outfit for camshaft/crankshaft repair. I air freight them parts from Alaska all the time and usually have it turned around within 2 weeks. If they can’t fix it the have sources on good replacements.
I know Cummins won't turn cranks for rebuild as per policy but if the engine came in with a turned crank with good history we could use undersized bearings. Normally good machine shops will do hardness test before turning crank because soft cranks can happen and will fail. I believe you will getter done rite you ain't no dummy Anderson's will prevail.
Great video Jeff Petey will be good as new. Rebuilt engine and new transmission. Alot of little things that will make it better. Looking forward to your next video stay safe Jeff and the boys, Mr Griffy.
I think doing it the way you are is the better way in the long run. Buying a plug and play crate motor might be quicker but piecing it out like you are allows you to put your eyes on every piece going back in so you can rest your head at night knowing what is in there.
Hi Jeff, All our Cummins had 4 batteries wired in series / parallel. The Hot Shot is the way to clean a truck. We used a Steam Jenny until the coil rotted away. Then we went to high pressure and just didn't clean the same way as hot water.
Ok which is we’re the batteries hooked up in series or were they hooked up in parallel? The only way know you would have 4 batteries with hooked up in series and also in parallel is if you had 6 volt batteries and a 12 volt charging/starting system or a 12 volt batteries and 24 volt charging/starting system. PACCAR did have that relay system for a time for 24 starting that I have seen older trucks from the Great White North but that seemed to go away thankfully when battery technology stared improving. I not trying to smart donkey just trying to understand what you were saying. Have a good day and a better tomorrow
Wowzers. Jeff wins again. Always makes sense to stick with what you have than spend massive amounts on doing a engine swap and then everything else that entails. Be different if it was just a roller and you were doing a ground up rebuild and decided to put a puddy cat in it and a 18sp Road ranger. Looking forward to seeing Petey Jo and running.
Check the main webs for cracks , Shawn bacon went for a rebuild on a n 14 and the block was cracked. 3406 cat in a box is 50k with no core I bet. Peterbilt liked to put 3 1000 amp batteries instead of four 750 batteries to save weight. Being a glider who knows . Connection look fine.
I know them rocker box covers have to be shimmed right they say to keep the shims with the cover you take off if using the same cam and such but with a new one not sure how you go about finding out the clearances guess you will have to look up or get a book
Definitely change the short clutch linkage rod under the cab and I would also put a treadle valve in while you’re in there. Much easier with everything out
Jeff with your mechanical aptitude you won't have any issues. You will cuss and shake your head at Cummins application of jig timing but once you do it and get it figured out you'll get it down. Other than that they are simple engines and to me easier to work on than Cats.
That old Wabco reminds me of my grandpa. He worked at a Wabco plant in Peoria Ill buuild what they called earth movers. the tire were like 7or 8ft tall this was back in the 70s and 80
In machinist terms it’s a “tenth” difference which is one hundred thousandth or .0001” or about 30 times smaller than a human hair. I doubt you will notice it.😊
I have a few of these trucks. you can run 3 or 4 batteries. Often you would see dump truck and stuff run 3 batteries to save weight. over the road trucks would run 4 batteries. lot more accessories to run. My trucks have 2 ground cables and 2 positive cables. there are cross over cables between all batteries. My 94 pete has 4 batteries , the 98 day cab has 3 . both have Cat engines.
What were the sleeves like Jeff? If the oil had been neglected, the coolant would have been too. Cummins along with all wet sleeve motors are prone to electrolysis and cavitation. I know some people get away with murder in the coolant department, but they are just lucky.
This is the same truck that had a rag stuck somewhere in the motor right? I did enjoy the video!!🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂 This "project" is going to produce a lot of content, maybe not the kind of content JPaydirt might like but........

Too bad about the engine being smoked. A leaky air filter seal may have contributed to the dirty oil, who knows. Make Petey run like champ and it will go far.
After talking with you I really don't see you having any of the typical N-14 problems since that's an older N-14, you basically have a reliable old Big Cam and since you're not going to crank up the power that thing should last well beyond what you're going to do. My Pete also has 3 batteries but my older 80's Pete's all had 4 batteries. That fiberglass keeps the fire away Lol...
3 batteries not necessary . 2 crank 1 house. 4 u can do the voltage 12v in parallel more batteries more cranking.. dump truck don't need house batterys.
Griff is just not pleased with the condition of the motor. Concerning Cat vs Cummins I’d add you probably are enjoying learning about rebuilding a Different motor.
I never had to rebuild a diesel but did a few gas burners. I guess you can call that good luck but since I said that now I’ll probably have to rebuild everyone I have. It’s not a cat but I have nothing bad to say about any older diesels. The old 2 strokers are cool to hear but myself I don’t want one. My older brother had a freight shaker with a 60 series and got a million 200 thousand before he had to do a in frame on it. I don’t know much of the packcar’s but I heard lots don’t like them at all.

yup
Your relationship with Bruce Mallinson is a great resource for information for Cummins stuff.

attention: everyone start sending Jeff Cummins dealer stickers for the door😂
Really enjoyed your video mate and im also one of those people that wondered why not a cat so thanks for the explanation it made sense to me
Jeff, you always have well thought out reasons for what you do. Makes sense to rebuild the N14. Shows what lack of maintenance can do though.
But tell me you didn’t pull the truck out with a four by four! I thought it was going to chase you to the next county!
Guess I got to much of a run, didn't know a four wheeler would pull a 23,000lb truck so easy lol
Old Griffy walking thru the shop like he's at a swap meet!
You Will Have It The Way You Want And Have A Great Truck When Its Done
Good work takes time!👍🏽😊❤️🇺🇸

So excited for this series.. we can’t wait to see the timing process so hope the vids are detailed… CANT WAIT..!…
Thanks for the show guys 👍🍻

Jeff I knew you really want to completely over haul the engine LOL course now you have a new N14 that will outlive you
The upper press fit on the liners is a result of 3 heads and no filler band under the top.of the linner ain't 3headed monsters great
Is the turbo worn out too(engine oil lubed of course)? Going to put a switchblade on this one?

Jeff Another Great Video!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing Jeff!
Enjoyed the video bro, looks like a few more videos on Petey to come. ken

Jeff will win.wonderful add with the 18 speed❤
I’m reminded of the beginning of The Six Million Dollar Man "Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology.
Cummins Red, or Cat yellow for the new motor ??

Who was that rockin group just a ripping it during the pressure washing ?? Good stuff !!
N-14s are great engines.
My old 3406 E only had 3 batteries in my long and tall 1997 379 Pete and Cat set it at 550 with an 18 transmission. It would run really well for 😊😅😅
My 02 Pete only has 3 batteries but it has a c15 Cat
On changing motors, yep, sounds easy when you say it quick.
Jeff , no good reman engines out there…? What’s the cost of a new unit ..?
It's only got 3 batteries because you need that space for emergency snacks in a day cab!
That's a cool little dog
What were the sleeves like Jeff? If the oil had been neglected, the coolant would have been too. Cummins along with all wet sleeve motors are prone to electrolysis and cavitation. I know some people get away with murder in the coolant department, but they are just lucky.
They look really good, the lower press fit liners cured a lot of the corrosion issues
Quite the project indeed.
Mr griffy whants ms paydirts treats😂❤ ps ,I'd give him all the treats as well❤

Jeff, is it cheaper to rebuild this whole engine piece by piece or just buy an entire remanded engine from somewhere if available?
This engine is a tier zero engine, it's out of production so getting a remaned one is out of the question
@ understood 🫡 well I got faith in you Jeff, Jeff is gonna is win!!! 🥇💯🙌🏻👍🏻

n14 is better than a cat engine any day of the week. dont forget to rebuild or replace the air dryer.
