      @Jessica White I just rehomed a b&g macaw who's nails were never done, always do the shortest nails on the back last as there the most lightly to bleed, practice playing wrap your birds in q towel so when you do go to the vet it's not a shock to there system..I did our newest member , I held him while my hubby cut, 1 nail blead n omg what a drama queen, but they need em done , never cut a birds nails if you don't have septic power on hand, to stop any bleeding or cornflour can be used but I prefer the vet powder, as birds can bleed out much faster than any other type of animal.

    Unfortunately I don’t have anyone to help me, and with the pandemic my bird’s nails have gotten quite sharp... The place I used to take her closed, and a new place I tried had her pretty freaked out so I’m hesitant about finding a new nail clipping place besides the vet’s.

I’m going to be trimming them with an identical nail trimmer to the one you used for the first time. My baby girl gets too stressed out and carsick going to the vet for just a nail trim. I’m hoping to reduce her stress next time by doing it myself. Fingers crossed! Thanks again for the great information.

My avian vet only charges $15 for nail trimming which I find to be pretty reasonable especially because avian veterinary care is pretty expensive where I live.

      Definitely read their body language and ask yourself why they bit you. Were you too close for too long? Do they not like your nails? Were you frightening in any way? Respect your bird’s boundaries and build trust and you will end up getting bit way less. They also might be going through bird puberty/get hormonal for any reason (you should research further on that.)

    Is it hygenec to shower with your pet birds and should and do you wash your hands after handling/playing with them?

    • @HeHe-ko3wr
      @HeHe-ko3wr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If by shower you mean bringing them with you in the water, then that's a big no-no. Because of the water dropping from the shower, it can restrain them from breathing. It might look like they are enjoying with keeping their head high and opening their beak, but this is just them trying to breathe. This is extremely dangerous for them. The only correct way is by keeping them on something higher, for example, the curtaim rod. If they perch here, they will get all the mist from the hot water.
      It really is your choice. I personally do not wash my hands after handling my birds unless I'm eating something right after. But if you feel that it is necessary, then go for it!

    Can you put sandstone or stoneware toys in their cage to help them shorten their nails in a natural way?
    Edit: You mentioned that you don't recommend sand perches in the end of the video. I still wonder if I could use only one sand perch or toy and the rest made of other materials so that the birds can decide. But still i haven't seen them IRL and maybe there are better solutions.

    Great video. Thanks! My bird hates getting his nails cut. He pulls his feet tight into his body. While trying to bite. It makes it so difficult!

    it's usually safer if you just file there nails instead but don't file to much like one melemeter u can use normal human nail file just don't file to far and I am not sure if it works on large birds

    followed this video when cutting my cockatiels nails for the first time! still a little difficult cause she’s very squirmy, but i got the job done. unfortunately she did move her foot on me just as i was cutting her back nail, and i accidentally cut the end of her quick, but stopped it pretty quickly with some cornstarch.

      How do you hold her properly to clip them? My boy squirms out of my grasp every time

      @@slitherboo i try to cut my birds nails when she’s more calm, and i cover her head and body and hold her with a towel, because i noticed when she can’t see she’s less squirmy and i can cut her nails. i (or someone to help me)use(s) one finger to hold open her foot so she doesn’t close it and clip her nails. you really just need to find ways that work for you and your bird!

      @@slitherboo no problem! keep in mind though this worked for my bird and it may not work for yours. whenever my bird is too squirmy though and i absolutely have to cut her nails i do put her on my knee, cover her with a towel, and i take her foot and cut her nails that way. it seemed as though she was less stressed out that way. also make sure to always keep qwik-stop or cornstarch on hand in case you cut the quick! i’ve done it by accident two times and felt really bad.

    I'm terrified to trim my green cheek conures nails. I'm so afraid I will cut too close to the vain. Every time I try she pulls away from me. I don't have anyone to help me hold her. What do you suggest I do? do you suggest I do?

    No, I never trained my lovebird to lay down on my hand. I never trained him to sit on my finger either. Is it too late to train him on my finger? He is 3 years old and 2 months
