    Switched to McDougall program in 2009 and I couldn't be happier. Don't worry Dr. John & Mary, you are making a bigger dent than you and Mary could possibly know. My brother, myself, some friends, all of us in our 70's follow McDougall with lots of success and grateful for all of the knowledge you share with us. Thank dog for the internet so that you can reach so many people. Thanks to you, Esselstyn, Campbell, Pritikin, Barnard, Klapper, Lisle, Goldhammer, Ornish, Popper, and so many others who stood up and told the truth. Many of us listened and heard you!! And we are better for it. Thank you from way inside our hearts!!

    After listening to McDougall, since 2016, my diet consist mostly of rice, potatoes, oats, pasta, lentils, chickpeas, apples, oranges and some veggies. No oil, nuts or avocados. I lost 80 lbs and kept it off. I didn't even caught a cold even since.

      @@clickbait9486 I do intermittent fasting, so I eat two meals a day. Yesterday I had no fat dal makhani (black indian lentils with garam masala) made in a slow cooker, with a side of basmati rice. For dinner, microwaved bell peppers with a side of brown rice, with salsa on top. Today I ate lentils, spinach and potato stew for lunch, and I will eat cold overnight oatmeal with cocoa powder and a couple of tbs of brown sugar for dinner (no veggies for dinner, because I will go running before sleeping, so I will stay low fiber before workout). A couple of slices of watermelon after every meal as a dessert, both today and yesterday.

      I did that for about 2 years and ended up with iron deficiency (anemia). I felt great in the first year and a half and lost 50 pounds. But then I started experiencing fatigue and longer time to recover from daily activies. Plant nutrients just don't absorb as well as from animal sources. A starch-based diet is a great cleasing tool in the beginning, until your body start becoming depleted of essential nutrients (B12, Vitamin D, Zinc, Iron, omega 3 EPA/DHA). Given the fact that Dr Mcdougall is pretty much against all form of supplementation will become problematic for a lot of people.

    Every word that comes out of this man's mouth is such gold. It is such a huge benefit to hear the issues that occur as people age. Kidney function declines by 20 -25 % after eating the SAD diet for years. Such sad news.

    Great information. I seem to always be learning something new every time I listen to Dr. McDougall. I lost 35 lbs within a few weeks of starting a WFPB lifestyle and have stayed with it for the last 6 years. And my husband finally came on board after serious health issues started. He quickly realized how much better he felt and has stuck with it for the last 3 years. His health issues got better right away. Thank you for your books Dr. McDougall. Looking forward to the next one. Also have used your website for a lot of research. Thank you for that also.

      @@maritzaperez4667 I wouldn’t worry about your daughter, she’s on the right path. McDougall really doesn’t understand human nutrition and you’d be wise to at least research an all meat diet. Someone like Dr. Andrew Chaffee is a very good resource to look at. I can also recommended the video by Barry Groves: Homo Carnivorous what we are designed to eat.
      Think about it in these terms - meat has been the main source of calories for humans for over 3 million years, animal fat and animal meat literally helped us develop larger brains - all of the plants you eat are man-made and never existed in nature until humans cultivated them. The idea that humans are herbivores is completely wrong. Also one last thing to consider is herbivores actually ferment plant fibres in their guts into short chain fatty acids - they actually absorb saturated fats. Look it up yourself. McDougell doesn’t understand human nutrition. Spend some time looking up the video I mentioned and look at the videos Dr. Chaffee has uploaded. Good luck but don’t worry about your daughter

    I’m a biologist so I appreciate the chemistry of macronutrients. It’s what actually easily proves to me, what you’re saying to us about fats. The concentration of various chemicals, hydrophobicity, biological cues that regulate;ate processes, etcetera. It’s all so fascinating. I’m in grad school for environmental geology (even though my undergrad is biology), but I was thinking about redirecting my further education into nutrition, or heck even something more than masters, to help drive the information into people’s laps about nutrition. I’m 48 though, so not sure if I’m too old. Any recommendations? I don’t have anyone in the business to get advisement. My local cardiologist recommends olive oil, so I’m not getting ANY advisement from him, even about my schooling haha. Great video.

      1. The artificial fat (oils) and the animal fat will make you - fat.
      2. The healthy fats from whole foods (nuts and seeds, avocados etc.) are very good for us when used in moderation, of course.
      Dr. John McDougall point is that if you want to lose weight fast, avoid any kinds of fats to get to your weight goal and be healthy again.
      Then, use healthy fats from whole foods (nuts and seeds...) in Moderation for a healthy living.

    Bodybuilders take getting lean to the extreme. They do many unhealthy things, but the old school bodybuilders still follow almost zero fat to get lean for a show. That alone should tell everyone that Dr. McDougall is right on the money. He knows what he is talking about.

      I think he is so correct that he actually takes it a little too far. Mary is underweight clincally (5'5 104 pounds) and they both look like they could use a calorie surplus. Muscle mass predicts lifespan and healthspan in old age. Also the leaner you are the more fat you require to keep your hormones in check if you are not an enhanced bodybuilder

    • @zoltanabonyi3307
      @zoltanabonyi3307 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@crystalnelson314 I agree that it is taken to the extreme & the advice or action taken in this way would be for the obese population. De novo lipogenesis just does not readily happen in humans to a significant degree. The metabolic cost is very high to do that & you would have to max out all your body's glycogen storage capacity. Even then as Dr. Mcdougall stated your body preferentially oxidizes excess carbs as heat or other ways. Having said that carbs could make fat loss slow because your body will preferentially burn the carbs before it taps into the bodyfat. This process still adheres to the universal law of thermodynamics. What was missing in most people's understanding, is what the body does with each macronutrient & to an extent the sub group of that macronutrient. One way to potentially eat this way without counting calories & restricting them is to employ intermittent fasting. The body ramps up body fat use after 12 hours of fasting. Common sense says the longer you fast after 12 hours, the more bodyfat you will use, then by going back to very low fat, you will not increase fat stores. The sum of this equation should equal sustained fat loss unless the body ramps de novo lipogenesis in response.

    • @crystalnelson314
      @crystalnelson314 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zoltanabonyi3307 I agree. I just think their advice is kind of extreme in that they apply it to everyone. Especially his protein arguments are much weaker than his fat arguments. He makes it sound like igf-1 is just this cancer hormone with no health use a lot of the time, but the truth is health outcomes are optimized with close to moderate igf-1 levels especially in older people so they don't just start wasting away. I would probably advise him and mary to eat closer to 15% protein and 10-15% fat and that should be sufficient, especially because the protein is plant based. Edit: I thought about it more and now I get why you went on about de novo lipogenesis. I was implying that the calories should come from fat and protein to put more meat on their bones more efficiently. Also, I have seen the de novo lipogenesis research, and while I agree with the conclusion you have, I think the conclusions are exaggerated by HCLF vegans because the studies afaik were done on obese people and when they looked for origins of their fat, most of it was from dietary fat because they eat so much dietary fat and are not adapted to carbs. I think it may be much more efficient in carb adapted thin people, though I may be wrong. It's like how the body does adapt to burning fat over carbs if you put it in ketosis, though this takes time and is not as healthy.

      @@zoltanabonyi3307 Yeah I think he misses the nuance on protein for sure, especially plant protein which has never been shown to damage the kidneys even in high quantities afaik. The only thing i think people should be cautious of about super high levels, or in people who are not strength/hypertrophy athletes, fairly high levels, of protein, is that the way a lot of people discover they have bad kidneys is through the hard way of getting kidney stones and then having to go on a low protein diet. So I think most people should not to too much above .8ish grams per pound without monitoring urine.
