      But if you're building a PC and you don't use an anti-static mat and you can't use an anti-static wrist wrap (because the PSU isn't installed into your PC & plugged into a wall outlet) - How do you ground yourself?

    • @user-vv8qz9hf7l
      @user-vv8qz9hf7l 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, you should stop spreading wrong information. Attaching your anti-static wristband to a PAINTED case screw doesn't do jack ****. @Fennec - in this case the best way to ground yourself would be directly do the grounding of your outlet.

    Nobody of the tech channels uses grounding. Like Linus. He never heard of it but handles $10k graphic cards.
    My dad is a tech guy who knows his stuff. He actually helped building hardware for satellites back in the days. He said the problem isn't that you will brick your hardware because that does only happen with a very slim chance. The problem is (and i'm recounting this from memory so it might not be exactly right) that those small electrical discharges can cause errors on chips which you won't even notice. Some resistance on some tiny transistor inside the chip becomes slightly different than before. The pc runs fine now because it never uses that transistor on the edge of the cpu or it's not that important but sometimes it does and the pc crashes and you will never find the error. Something like that. So it causes micro-errors on chips and all those tech guys actually have very high-end, very expensive and slightly faulty hardware.
    That's why you always should ground yourself.

    Basically think about when you’ve experienced ESD intentionally or otherwise. You can only accumulate charge via the triboelectric effect, so if you aren’t rubbing anything, you don’t build up charge. You can look up a table of triboelectric coefficients to see what material pairings you especially need to worry about. Have your components on top of a non-conductive surface, wood or plastic table both work. Then either don’t rub anything st all or if you are rubbing things a bit, periodically discharge. You don’t even need to be connected to a proper ground to discharge sufficiently, you’ve probably experienced being zapped touching a door handle. Touching a large piece of bare metal will work pretty well. It will saturate if you use it too much before the particles in the air have time to carry away the charge

    Oh lord, I've actually never, ever made an effort to ground myself before building my PCs. I actually never thought about it until I was reading on how to upgrade my PS5s storage and Sony recommends doing this before opening it up at all. I wonder if them mentioning it is just them being overly cautious or if someone actually did fry their system with static electricity and they sued or tried to sue for it.

    Recently moved into a new place with carpet (old one didn't have carpet so I built mine without ever worrying about it) and I've been wanting to install new case fans for quite some time since I only have one working one and it doesn't do a whole lot to dissipate heat at all, so this video's pretty helpful. I haven't noticed any static shocks when touching anything since moving in so I'd say I'm on the safe side. Might also be helpful that the bottoms of my slippers are rubber.

Can I damage the mobo and other parts just by touching them on the sides before I even put them in the case? Since I have never built a pc before I was just curious and opened the packing (took them out of the bag) and just looked at them. Worried I may have damaged them without even starting my build.

    If you don't trust your electrical system to be properly grounded you could do this. Put a steel tent peg into the ground close to a window, then attach a few meters of electrical wire to the tent peg & run the wire through an open window. Then attach your wrist strap to to the electrical wire. Build your pc on a table next to the window.

    When I was working at IBM they gave us a very compelling demo. Using a electron microscope they show us a circuit which had test leads exiting which we applied an ESD charge. With our own eyes we could see the area vaporize and become damaged. We did this three times with different voltages two showed damage but still worked. It was clear the damage weakened the chip as it did finally fail.

    Many of CMOS technology components can be damaged by charges of less than 1,000 volts, so low that you would never feel or see the static discharge. Some of the more sophisticated components can be damaged by charges as low as 10 volts. So where you think everything went well, because there was no visible or tactile evidence of a static discharge, you may have fried your computer bits.
    For most people, the threshold for feeling static shocks is in the range 2,000-4,000 volts. A voltage of 10,000 Volts is not unusual and you can end up with about 20,000 to 25,000 volts.
    Like wrecking your car while texting and driving, it's never happened to you until it does. Be careful with your components, make sure you've been discharged before touching them.

    I used to stand in my bear feet on a ceramic tile floor in the kitchen. Now I use a anti static wrist strap because I don't want to lug it from the room it's being built in.

    for the wrist strap, does the psu also has to be connected to the wall or thats just for when you dont have the wrist strap?

    Thanks for the tutorial! I'm still a littl confused as I'm still very new to all of this. I wanna remove my graphics card and I've looked up how to do it but for this do I need to wear the strap? And when I do some people attach it to the radiator or their pcu, I'm sill confused how to do it as safe as possible to avoid any disasters

    I mean, I could see if you were building during the winter when theres like zero percent humidity here. Static is generated pretty easily. Sidestory, I work at a nuclear plant and radon occurs naturally in the lower levels which will give you a false positive for contamination when you try to leave. The rub is that static from your clothes ATTRACTS radon, so every winter is a bitch just to do your walkdowns.

    Hello, I was wondering when I was building, I plugged in my psu into the outlet to ground myself (with the switch off). However near the end, I noticed that the power cable was only half plugged into the psu, you literally need to man handle it for the power cable to go in the psu. So was I still grounding myself enough when I was building my pc? ( I touch it every 5-7 minutes or so)

    So, what I have is an auto-voltage regulator (AVR), which is also a kind of power supply if you think about it. Can I just plug it in but not turn it on, and step on it with my bare foot while I'm working on my laptop disassembly, while my other foot is bare as well and just stepping on the floor?

  • @datashe

    So, if I understood correct: 1-Turn off your PC, 2-Turn off your PSU, 3-be sure it's plugged into a grounded wall socket, 4-Touch a metal part of the case (or the metal part of the PSU) once every couple of minutes and you should do great? (maybe doing this while being barefoot on a ceramic floor like mine) I just want to do a yearly dust clean and thermal paste change here! :)

  • @Beavis26NZ
    @Beavis26NZ ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Bear in mind that most gaming pc cases and PSUs are painted, and the paint acts as an insulator. If you have a multimeter with a continuity tester, you can use it to check whether or not a connection point is insulated or will conduct by placing one probe of the multimeter to the ground pin on your PSU, and the other to whatever potential grounding point you wish to use.

      @@danielkim9997 Screws are black, but not painted. They conduct electricity. And the screw threads aren't usually painted through.

    • @americanvisayan
      @americanvisayan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      honestly, even with the psu off, leaving it plugged in is not an optimal idea. as long as you are not wearing clothing like wool and remain standing to prevent build up, just touching the metal case every few minutes will keep esd eliminated. Keeping the case plugged in, even when the psu is off, carries a slight risk of shock

  • @MrIsra12
    @MrIsra12 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Beware that the outlet from which you plug psu from is actually grounded. Easy to check when you have one of those plug meters.
