Dev Vickers.I had another go following your steps and hallelujah I cracked the update to the firmware on D7100. I more then pleased since I am nearing my 83 birthday. Chders
To Carolyn G: Thank you very much for your kind comments. I am really glad that the videos are proving useful. if there is any areas you would like to see videos on, let me know and I will do my best.
So can you update the firmware from a 1.2 to a 1.4? Probably a stupid question but I thought I’d ask. Also what does formatting an SD card do? I’m new to this and learning as I go I’m sorry. Thanks in advance!
Hi Kaylee, there's no such thing as a stupid question, I don't think there is any issue updating the firmware from 1.2 to 1.4, it is only minor changes that are made each time. The rreason for formatting the SD card is to make sure it has no other files on it that could disrupt the update process. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching, stay safe, Dave.
You were awesome! Thank you VERY much all the way from South Africa for sharing your knowledge. It was so easy following your directions and with no stress to me. Five out of five stars and I highly recommend your video to all.
thank you so very much Mr. The Photo Show! I have been wreckin my brain on how to update the firmware. I finally was able to update after seeing your video and ordering a sd card reader. lol I love your videos. they are clear, easy, & just amazing! keep up the great work
+Andreas Toro you will need to check the Firmware version on your camera and compare to the latest version on Nikon's website. If the numbers match you have the latest version if not you can update it.
Thank you for your prompt reply. I have watched your video repeatedly to familiarize with its context. I also managed to communicate with the Nikon agents in NZ and in particular the top men for the job. Together, via telephone we were able to carry out the instructions supplied verbatim. After several attempts we gave up due to the failure to to firmure the camera. Should you update to C1.03 I would be most grateful to know how it is done. Cheers
+samuel grau I will have a look at Nikon's site and see if there is any difference. I will be looking at the European site though but the instructions should be the same.
Hi Jesper, the update has to be read from the memory card. It uses the same card that you store the photos on, in the camera. I hope this helps. Have fun, Dave.
Thanks for your video. could you advise me please. My D7100 is an Asian import and I live in the UK. would I have to select Asia for the firmware update? I have tried using UK firmware selection and although see the firmware on the SD card the camera is not recognising it.
Hi Don, the camera will only access the update from the SD card, there is no way to navigate to a file on a computer from the camera. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
Hi, I have not come across this problem before, if the camera is still working then you have not done anything that problematic. The bin file will not show on the camera only the firmware number. See which number your camera has and reference it with the updates number. Good luck, thank you for watching, Dave.
Wouldn't things be easier if you used a card just for the update, saving the pix on the existing card? And how much capacity would you need for an update card?
Yes you could have a separate card just for the update, they are not big file sizes. It is not something that needs doing very often so I just showed a method using an existing card. Personally I download images from my cards straight away so I rarely have many on the card. Thanks again, Dave.
Hey someone helped me do this. When you update the firmware for C, are you able to put new lenses on the camera. I want the AF-p 70-300 lens f4.5-5.6 ed VR on my Nikon d7100 and it said you need a firmware for those lens. The number for C is 1.03 and for L 1.08. Please respond.
It maybe that the camera will need to be taken for repair! Before that I would remove the battery and sd cards., then replace the battery and see if the camera turns on. If it does try re-setting it to factory defaults. This is done by holding down the iso button and the +/- button at the same time for more than two seconds. (both buttons have a green dot next to them). If none of this works you will need to find a camera repair shop or return the camera to Nikon for repair. Good luck, Dave.
Hey I did the distortion control data. I think I forgot to format my memory card but I had not taken any photos with it on my Nikon d7100. But I had taken pictures with the memory card on another camera and I deleted all the photos on that camera. I just hope nothing goes wrong with my Nikon d7100 after forgetting to format the memory card. But again I had not taken any pictures with memory card inside my Nikon d7100. Do you think something will go wrong?
If you have not already performed the update, I would recommend formatting the card and starting again. If you have done it and the camera is still functioning then you are probably OK. Good luck, have fun, Dave.
The Photo Show thanks But I had no taken any pictures with card in the Nikon d7100. I formatted it after the update. I just forgot to do it before the update. But the card all ready had 0 photos. So everything should be alright I'm guessing? The camera is functioning properly. I just hope it doesn't mess up later on.
Can Nikon release firmware updates to improve buffer performance in the cameras? If they can, then they should do it to the D7100 because the buffer is so small.
Now I have been informed that there is a new firmware for the camera C1.03 - I have tried unsuccessfully to update to this latest firmware according to the written instructions supplied which by the way they appear to be exactly the same you have shown in your Utube for the C1.02 update.
The L version is an update for lens profiles. It can be updated exactly the same way but only after the C version is updated. They need to be done separately.
If it ain't broke, then don't fix it! Most times these updates are for features that you will never, ever use, so why risk making your camera into a brick? It's not worth it!
Dev Vickers.I had another go following your steps and hallelujah I cracked the update to the firmware on D7100. I more then pleased since I am nearing my 83 birthday. Chders
+samuel grau brilliant, I am really pleased you were successful. Enjoy your 83rd birthday. All the best, Dave.
I have a D7200 and had never updated my firmware. Your video walked me through the process perfectly. Thank you so much!
That is brilliant, I am really glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
To Carolyn G: Thank you very much for your kind comments. I am really glad that the videos are proving useful. if there is any areas you would like to see videos on, let me know and I will do my best.
@Eduardo Reginald No we genuinely don't!
This was simply incredible. Thank you. I could not have done it without you.
Brilliant, I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
Can I uses the cords that come with the camera and connect them to my imac to accomplish this?
So can you update the firmware from a 1.2 to a 1.4? Probably a stupid question but I thought I’d ask. Also what does formatting an SD card do? I’m new to this and learning as I go I’m sorry. Thanks in advance!

Karin Pienaar Thank you very much for your comment. Say high to South Africa for me.
Thank you so much for showing this. I have now updated both my Nikon D90 and my Nikon D7100 :-)
Brilliant! I am glad it was useful. Thank you for the comment.

Thank you for the video that you posted. It helped me update the firmware on my Nikon D7100 look like eating a piece of cake.
Hi Jon, thank you for your comment, I am glad the video was useful.
Thank you so much for this video. I just updated the firmware from 1.02 to 1.04!
Hi Sandra, no problem at all, I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, stay safe, Dave.
Dave Vickers: You do an excellent job! Thanks, David F.
+Andreas Toro you will need to check the Firmware version on your camera and compare to the latest version on Nikon's website. If the numbers match you have the latest version if not you can update it.
I am updating a D7200 and I use Tamron lenses will this be any problem for the function of the lenses ?

I updated the C firmware, but can't find the L firmware update on the Nikon website.
Is it possible to update the firmware by plugging the camera into my laptop? I don't have any way of putting the memory card in.
Hi Jesper, the update has to be read from the memory card. It uses the same card that you store the photos on, in the camera. I hope this helps. Have fun, Dave.

Thanks. Great instructions. Tried to do this without card reader and was unable so glad I came here.
Thank you for watching, I'm glad it was useful.
What did Nikon add to the Camera in the update?
+Ianiii91 The firmware update will not effect any settings you have made to your camera. Just make sure you have a full battery before you update.
oh my god,to you still have the 1.02 update file? I really need it but nikon only offers 1.03 now :(
where can we download 1.02?
Randy Garrido oh
Absolutely brilliant and so easy to follow!...... Thank you so much! I have successfully updated the firmware on my Nikon D7100.
Thanks. But couldn't you go direct from camera to computer? Your VBogs are very good. I have gone thru most of them.
Hi Don, the camera will only access the update from the SD card, there is no way to navigate to a file on a computer from the camera. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
So can you tell me just what was that update for anyways thanks
hello, i did everything right but in my camera it does not show the bin. file the update does not show up, do you know why? thanks
Hi, I have not come across this problem before, if the camera is still working then you have not done anything that problematic. The bin file will not show on the camera only the firmware number. @@ThePhotoShow thanks for the respond!
I just bought my D7100. Does it have the latest firmware automatically or do I have to update it? Thanks.
Thanks ! I couldn't figure this out myself. It works

Nikon does say that a firmware update may be needed for that lens. If you update to the latest version it should be all good.
Hi sir plz tell me how to converd fhoto in fhone plz . . Do or nat

Bernaola & Hill Fotofilm hj
Hey there whats the advantage of updating it?
Thank you so much! Same question about the L version, but I see you answered below. Great job and easy to understand! : D
My pleasure, I'm glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
Luego de varios intentos y gracias a tu video pude actualizar mi Nikon D7100, thanks you!!!
+Pedro Romero My pleasure, thank you for your comments.
Where is the L version, not found on Nikon web page.
Hi .. I did the update but I closed the camera at the time of update Now the camera does not work What do I do

Unfortunately I did it but nothing happened. Thank you
Sorry to hear that! Your best bet will be to find a Nikon repair dealer or camera shop, they should be able to get it back working. Good luck, Dave.
What about the distortion control update?
+glendor2 It is exactly the same process, you just need to do one update at a time.
+The Photo Show It worked for both. It's hard to believe that a simple firmware upgrade can make a great camera even better!!
can not find the other update on nikons site
Joachim Maldaos The L: update is called Distortion Control Data version 2.
Does it actually do anything noticeable different.
Hi Justin, to be honest, no! It is just a good idea to keep the firmware updated.
Hey I did the distortion control data. I think I forgot to format my memory card but I had not taken any photos with it on my Nikon d7100. what about the L version update?
Hi Juan, it is exactly the same process you just need to have done this update first. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
Thanks, very nice tutorial. Updated from 1.01 to 1.04.
Thank you!! Very informative and detailed explanation! Thank you for sharing.

You are a very good teacher! Thanks!
Thank you very much. Thanks for watching, have fun, Dave.
how about updating the L, 1.009?
The process would be exactly the same, you just have to do the C update first. Good luck.
Now I have been informed that there is a new firmware for the camera C1.03 - I have tried unsuccessfully to update to this latest firmware according to the written instructions supplied which by the way they appear to be exactly the same you have shown in your Utube for the C1.02 update.

Very well explained.
No problem, I am glad the video was useful. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave
Thank you. This video was really helpful.
wow thats for the next time dave thank you again cheers trev
I just cannot get my computer to read my flash card. maybe my software not up to date.
can you do this via USB cable>?
Nikon recommend not updating via USB cable. If connection is lost during the update it could ruin the camera systems.
ok. thanks.
thank you very clear instruction, You do an excellent job! Thanks JVC

+Κυριάκος Παπαχριστοφίλου Thank you for your comments.
Do you need a computer to do this?
Yes you will need a computer to download the update and transfer it to your SD card. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.
The Photo Show What happens when you format the memory card? Do all the pictures get deleted?
Formatting the card will delete all the images and ensure it is ready for the camera update.
What does this do ??

Never format a card with stuff on it that you want to keep. This guy should have mentioned that.
