  • Chris and I found gold each day of this trip and I can't wait to show you all the final cleanout!
    Thanks again to everyone for watching and thank you all for your continued support of my TH-cam channel!
    To those wondering when the highbanker will be ready for sale, It won't be ready 100% until the end of this season as I will be testing a few things along the way as I work towards the best final product I can come up with.

    Good vid. If you are catching 95+%you are doing well. Having 2 guys shoveling into the sluice makes this a go to sluice, because it will easily handle whatever one man can shovel. There is no doubt in my mind your double decker could handle chunkier gold that would come through the screen via the size of the expanded being used. The cross hatching of the screen helps with stopping the heavies going over it in the water . A way to see if you are loosing gold in the over flow of water over the screen is pan your over sized gravel collected in the buck that collects that over flow water as well . screen and wash that gravel again pan and see . The screen seems to be working well and gravel does not seem to hang up like on regular bar grizzlies . You got my attention on your build . Looking like a winner so far

      Thanks Bart! I think I needed the screen to be at a lower average angle, but wanted the hopper a bit steeper so I picked the middle ground. I can adjust the angles when I get home and I think it will work even better next run. I'm definitely very happy with the initial test and am overall very please with how the highbanker performed! Recovery I believe is better than 95% once I got it dialed in. There was almost no scour out losses with running empty either. Absolutely loving it so far and it's only going to get better! Thanks for the tips along the way!

    You have a single T-Piece emitting water.
    I would consider having 2 of them side by side.
    Just to build a wall of opposing water to keep the initial dump in the hopper for a little longer.

    I like your source of material you are running into your highbanker. Lots of organics with roots shows many low and high water runs over that area. Areas with roots/gravel usually (but not always) are rich with flour gold. A well tuned piece of equipment you are running. Must be tuned in the key of "G."🎼

    I dont see any surge in the sluice from the bed load dump, so well thought out. Chris and you always have such great adventures together, Glad you took him, at least he got cameraman breaks LOL. The fingers look like they may catch most of the gold, but then again how much was pounded into the hopper by the blaster jet :) love this machine all around. I''m sure you are already tweeking it for next time out :) cheers. K

      @UtmostOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the hopper did a great job of handling surging! I'm calling the middle capture area "goldfingers" haha! The split seems to be about 25% hopper, 25% goldfingers, and 50% makes it into the sluice. I'm really happy with the first run, and it can only get better from here on out!

    This is an ingenious build Kyle. The reverse water flow in the extra-long hopper, ever-steepening and auto-clearing grizzly, and pretty much perfect water flow on your 2 level box. One of the better DIY builds I have ever seen for sure. Looks like it's working well. That is as close to perfect water flow for flour gold as I have ever seen, and nearly zero bubbles!

  • @MrNewff
    @MrNewff ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Kyle. I'm up in Fort Mcmurray and I've only been out 2 days so far. Haven't found any gold yet and don't expect to find much. That said, if I do...I'm just wondering if you ever would make a few of your new design to sell or if you have a highbanker that you'd recommend for the fine gold we get here in Alberta? Where do you buy your aluminum sheets from?

    • @UtmostOutdoors
      @UtmostOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I get my sheets from Russel metals here in Calgary. Material is is pretty affordable but I think they have a $500 minimum purchase. I intend to have a full size highbanker for sale by the end of the season to give me something to do in the off season, but as I collect prototypes along the way I may sell a few one off's later on in the year. I can't just collect these things now can I? haha
      As far as recommendations go, surprisingly I don't actually know much about the various models being sold out there. I would typically recommend you look locally as a way to support your local builder, as well as in the hopes a local knows the local gold... If you have any you have an eye on, feel free to email me what you see and I might be able to give you a gut reaction to what I see? I know that Paul Jarvis out of Edmonton has a company called "adventures in prospecting" and I think his boxes looked pretty good. I would shy away from the dream mats he usually sells if you are going to be using a 3 or 4 foot box, as the recovery I saw using the mini beach mats in my 2020 season was pretty bad in comparison to miners moss (like 70% vs 90+%) but Paul will sell a box with moss as well.
      I'm not 100% sure about any recommendation right now though, as I'm still out testing and learning through the season. I even have a gold hog piglet I'll be reviewing soon which might actually be a viable option if you were OK with getting an extension for it.
      My current favorite gold specific mat is the VDR mats from infinity prospecting, although I still use miners moss as I haven't had a chance to field test the VDR yet to see how it does with surging and running empty...
      Lots of good options. Finding the gold is the hard part, then just make sure you have a way to carry in whatever it is you wind up buying. Smaller and lighter has become a high priority for me.
      Anyways, that's my way too long winded answer for now :)

    I’m not a fan of that top sluice. It makes no sense to sluice material before cleaning and classifying, which is why we don’t see it on commercial equipment. There’s a reason why it’s always clean/classify/sluice.
    Move that top sluice to a 2nd level nugget/picker sluice and you’ll have something!
    I’m also not a fan of how much it shakes and shudders with each shovel full. That loosens/looses gold. Thicker leg stock and legs angled out will stabilize things.

    • @UtmostOutdoors
      @UtmostOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fair enough... The hopper has moss in it more as a way to absorb and then bleed out the black sands for a smoother feed rate into the main box. It turned out that the top hopper actually captured 25% of our total gold take, so it did help with recovery somewhat. As to the legs, I know some guys actually used to mount their motors directly on the sluice to add vibration to help settle the gold into the matting. This may be beneficial, or might not, I don't know for sure... Perhaps angling out the legs as you say would help the movement, but I'm not sure I see a reason to at this point. Thanks for the feedback! I wonder if as you say a "nugget and picker sluice" could be incorporated into the top hopper simply by adding some raised expanded to the bottom 6" of that run... Food for thought for testing for sure.

    Nice video but I disagree with the design of the highbanker. I would definitely not run a mat and expanded in the top section as it makes it not clean out and you really don't need it as you catch everything in the lower sluice. And I would not use a square mesh, instead use a proper grizzly bar with about 1cm between the bars.

    • @UtmostOutdoors
      @UtmostOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have to disagree with you here, but mostly because I also used to think hopper recovery was not needed. Here is why I think we were wrong and why I like the new design:
      The hopper can be made a bit steeper to help the rocs tumble out faster, that I agree with, but holding the rocks for a few seconds really helps regulate the surge of a big shovel into the lower sluice. The top miners moss also holds onto the heavy sands for a while to slowly bleed those into the lower box which helps recovery. Also, we found out that the top recovery area actually held onto about 25% of our total gold, even after running for 6 hours between cleanouts! That's 25% that never had a chance to be lost in the main sluice...
      Now about the grizzly versus screen: You may be correct here. I have tried both a screen and a grizzly on my old highbanker, and the grizzly did a better job of shedding roots and grass. The grizzly did however let some larger rocks through that required a higher flow rate through the sluice to clear, as well as risk scouring out gold held underneath them. The screen is hands down better for recovery when running low flow and slope in search for the ultra fine, flat gold in my area. But it does leave some to be desired when it comes to shedding organics. I will have to put more thought into that part of the build...
      Thanks for the comment and thoughts, It's always good to keep trying to improve the design and these thoughts help!

It's a very light pump for It's output compared to other options... if you're going all out, I'd recommend it, otherwise look into electric bilge pump options for a mini highbanker as a viable option to start and access hard to reach areas.
