    Gonna admit, I really, really needed to realise that I can just skip a scene if I'm having trouble with it. One of those bits of advice thats so obvious that no-one says it.

      I'm writing a novel right now and I've practically started in the middle haha

    I never really realized how hard writing actually is until I actually did it, It's actually given me a lot more confidence now that I've finished all of it, and all I have left to do is some animation. Love your channel by the way, it's one of the only sci fi channels that actually discusses the behind the scenes work necessary to make sci-fi, rather than just lore.

    I've never considered the Hitchcock table-bomb analogy as pertaining to character emotions and dramatic irony before, but now that I'm thinking about it that way, it makes total sense. Thanks for that insight; great vid!

    I've run into many of the problems mentioned, but you didn't talk about names. Names of aliens, alien races, and technology can be a huge problem because unless the reader is extremely familiar with sci-fi they might not understand it.
    And I really don't want to just steal names from other properties (hyper drive, warp drive, impulse, transporter, blaster, phaser, etc) but coming up with new names for all that stuff can be a real hassle.

    • @RowanJColeman
      @RowanJColeman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Depends on the universe, but here's a trade secret I use, Random Name Generators. Seriously I just Google, "Random Alien Name Generator" etc. I never use any of the actual names generated, but it's a good starting place to get your mind rolling.

    • @julius-stark
      @julius-stark 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RowanJColeman I've tried the random name generators and have had... limited success. I shy away from anything that's "too" alien or just sound like made up words. Star Wars can get away with a Qui-Gon and Ki-Adi-Mundi but those read too weird for me.
      The one trick that tends to work for me is going to babynames.com and looking up names from non-English speaking countries that sound foreign to us but are common in other cultures so it's not so much of a made-up word. Also works for naming alien races and ships.

      Do a little research on etymology; how language and specific words have evolved over hundreds or thousands of years. It can give you a loose idea of how to take oft-used terms and modify them into something unusual yet relatable. Cutting out some, rearranging, and changing the pronunciation a bit, keeping past etymological habits in mind. Starting off with a shortened slang modification you invent could also be way to get that ball rolling.

      I like the names of Himalayan mountains. Nanga Parbat, Cho Oyo, Sagarmatha. Also, I named a character "Semesa Rokadaguna," after a real-life rugby player.

    The six-week switch is a very familiar problem - I often end up switchinh from one project to another based on the media I'm consuming, which usually results in me moving from genre to genre

      I don't read people's story idea or script emails. I've mentioned why on my Twitter before. I appreciate the passion, genuinely I do, but there's no real point in sending me that stuff. I get it a surprising amount.
