    • @raidzor5452
      @raidzor5452 7 ปีที่แล้ว +155

      No because engines are constanyly pressurizing and have plenty power to keep plane pressurized even when flushing.

    • @Yonex333
      @Yonex333 7 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      No because it has a delay function, that stops you from constantly keeping pressing the button and activating the system.

    • @mrifixplanes1813
      @mrifixplanes1813 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      No, the engine bleed/air conditioning system continuously feeds pressurized air into the cabin. The pressure in the cabin is controlled by the outflow valves, these are small doors on the fuselage that let air out, they are usually open to some extent in flight, if you continuously flushed the toilet then the outflow valves would move towards the closed position to maintain cabin pressure.

    • @rosen9425
      @rosen9425 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      That would be a stupid function. And one super fired engineering team 🤣

    • @ningnyco1782

      Since impossible to flush all pressure out of cabin. Take note that cockpit will get MASTER WARNING when low cabin pressure, and oxygen mask will eject automatically when cabin pressure continue to decrease. AFAIK.

    Yup, I used to be that lucky guy that used to have to service those systems at DTW.
    The other GSE's (Ground Service Employees) use to jokingly refer to us as "The Turd Hurders".
    These systems especially the older gravity fed blue juice lavs were a pain in the ass to service in the middle of the winter on the older DC-10s Older 747-200 series where there rear lav service panel was way up under the tail and the DC-9/MD-80 forward lavs because the service panel was located directly below the jet bridge and sometimes I had to go get a gate agent to relocate the bridge because the bumper was right up against the panel.....
    One incident I had on 12/26/98 I was servicing the rear lavs of a Champion airlines Boeing 727 and when I opened the outer hatch, the inner flap was already opened with upwards of 20 gallons of 'you know what' pressing against the outer hatch, the ice build up wouldn't allow me to reseal the hatch and decided to take my chance to jump out of the way about 4 feet off the rear of the lav truck.
    When I hit the ramp I must have slipped because the next thing I knew I was on my ass looking at my ankle that was tacoed 90 degrees the wrong direction.
    Needles to say that put me out for the next 8 weeks and I messed the winter deicing season of '98/'99.That was the year wear passengers spent hours trapped on aircraft on taxiways.

    • @Finnv893

      Well when the plane is in the air, it doesn't gain weight (maybe a little) from outside sources. They calculate the percentage of people that might come onboard already with a bellyful of shit and the weight of all the food items (food eaten -> shit), and design the waste tank accordingly, humans with the rare genetic trait of fabricating shit out of vaccum are not permitted to come onboard, obviously.....

    The waste does not just drop to the ground. That is comforting, unlike in many trains, where it just goes down to the tracks. But the sink water does fly out, so that is probably what I see when there is stuff coming out of the planes in the sky. Also, the toilet flush is so loud and powerful, it sometimes scares me. Now I know how It works and why the system is how it is.

  • @MinkieWinkle
    @MinkieWinkle 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    fun fact, the system is powerful enough to suck a aircraft blanket down through the waste pipes, many times when a Ac has come in for a check at our maintenance facility, we have stripped out the waste tanks to find a blanket has blocked one of them.
    our conclusion is that passengers have gone to use the toilet during the night, , sat on the toilet while wrapped up in a warm blanket, and flushed, we have only imagined the shock the passenger would have had when their blanket disappeared.

    HI Joe, does the luggage area under the plain also have equal air pressure? If I put a new bottle of coke in my checked bag, will it explode?

    • @mwbgaming28
      @mwbgaming28 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the cargo hold is pressurized to the same pressure as the cabin, this is to ensure that altitude sensitive bombs don't explode in flight and so animals can be transported safely in the hold, it is also to make the floor of the cabin much lighter (since it wouldn't need to be a pressure vessel then)

    • @WIRRUZZZ
      @WIRRUZZZ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, pretty much the whole plane is pressurized, that is also why it is shaped like a cylinder, just like gas bottles. This is, except for a sphere, the best shape for containing pressure. In the tail it looks something like this: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Rear_pressure_bulkheads_(aircraft_fuselages)
      I wonder if a coke can might survive unpressurized anyways. It looks like they can have internal pressures of about four times atmospheric pressure (hypertextbook.com/facts/2000/SeemaMeraj.shtml). At cruise altitude, the pressure is somewhere between 1/4 and 1/5 of the pressure at ground level, so the pressure difference goes from about 4 to 4.75 to 4.8. Depending on how big the safety factor is, that might actually work.

  • @hungmcgee4840

    Some years ago, before the demise of British Caledionian Airways, who were responsible for many royal flights, there was a glass display case in their maintenance hangar at Heathrow. This contained a varnished turd alleged to be one produced by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the 2nd and bore a brass plaque identifying it as such. Mischievous ground and air crew had conspired for some time to drain the tank on any occasion when HM had visited the toilet during a flight when no other crew member or passenger had done so, thus identifying the solitary turd as a genuine royal article.

    @Captain Joe Can you do a video on the 400Hz electric systems it has so much great advantages over 50/60Hz most people are not aware of.And a few minor disadvantages.I can imagine it will become obsolete because these days DC motors and converters are really cheap and low in weight.

    • @rhamph
      @rhamph 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A quick search tells me 400 Hz systems are lighter/smaller but less efficient. It's a good tradeoff for an aircraft where every kg matters but a poor tradeoff for a machine installed in a factory on the ground.

    On a Lufthansa flight a while ago, they had the toilets in the belly of the plane, and a contingent of passengers who, apparently, were not prepared to fly and didn't know how to use toilets. It was disgusting, and the crew had no plan to deal with it. The toilets were overflowing, actual sh-- on the lower deck, by the time we were skirting Greenland. It was basically a transatlantic flight that smelled like Sh__ all the way from Montreal to Frankfort. There has to be a better way to inform passengers who may not be familiar with plumbing, let alone contagion, on how to these systems effect everyone on the plane.
