Tying the Hollow Deceiver - Pink Punk (Pike Fly)

  • The Deceiver is a fly I wouldn't be without when targeting pike.
    The standard 6" roach I tied a couple of years ago has received an upgrade, with the addition of longer saddle feathers and a head made from a blend of mostly Angelina Fibre, mixed with a little Nayat and Icelandic sheep. This makes the fly hang longer and move from side to side when stripped. It's already accounted for half a dozen pike this week so better tie a few more.
    Material List:
    Hook: Sakuma Manta 545 4/0
    Thread: GSP 100D
    Natural White Bucktail
    White, grey and grizzly saddle
    Sybai Flash Icelandic Sheep Hair Fluo Pink
    Funky Ripple Flash Pearl
    Nayat Gun Metal Grey
    Angelina Fibre Straight Cut Silver Iris
    Angelina Fibre Almost Black
    Eyes 10mm Jerkbaitmania Roach

    Dude that fly is amazing!! Great job. Glad you took the time to write the ingredients too. I’m a saltwater guy so I’ve really only messed with bucktail and hackle. That other stuff looks nice. Btw, so you prefer GSP thread over mono? It controls the hollow tie angle better?

    • @paul_monaghan
      @paul_monaghan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I have very little experience tying with mono so cant compare. I know a lot of salt tyers use mono though so there must be a reason.

    Thanks a lot Paul for your videos. I am tying now more single hook flies because of them. Do you lose more fish with single hook flies than with hook/stinger hook flies? I guess the release is much easier.

      Thanks, I lose pike on both from time to time, its just how it is. During the winter sometimes they follow and pluck at the tail, so that's when I use a double hook. I try to use a single when I can though

    thanks for all the videos Paul. What product from Whiting Farms are you using? Is that whiting?

    Really nice fly Paul. A lot of tyers make these flies but few achieve the continued tapered profile with action at the tail like you've done here. You've hooked me, I've subscribed. But what the heck is Nayat, natural or snythetic? I've never heard or seen it. Thanks 👍😎

      Glad you like it Joe. Nayat is a natural fur and is also known as snow runner. It's very similar to Icelandic sheep, but slightly courser. It's tough, doesn't tangle like synthetic and moves very naturally in the water. The best quality I have used so far is from Skeena River Fly Supply, but the nayat sold by Foxytails is pretty good too, just shorter.

    Nice fly but that music is ridiculous. Talk us through the process - which material, why you are using it, and techniques you applying for the look.

    Too much layers, clutering of materials, heavy streamer.

      Stfu fool, where's your instructional vids.

    • @paul_monaghan
      @paul_monaghan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe a little cluttering with the feathers, but the streamer isn't heavy. This is one of the first vids I did years ago and yes they were a bit fancy back then. Think of it as learning as you go if you care to check out the later tutorials. Views change as you learn more over time.
