    I used to think prong collars were cruel. I refused to use one on my GSP. That is, until he became so unruly at about 6 months old. He would bite his leash, lay down and pull ahead when I tried to walk him. After watching a lot of prong collar videos, I decided to buy one. First time I put it on him, he was like butter. I don’t think he liked it as much as I did. Lol. I am 70 years old and was able to control him like a pro. Love, love, love it. I use it just for training, not all the time. Thank you for your video.

      I’m 68 and that’s my feeling too! Adopted an adult rescue coonhound this summer and omg, was losing m mind trying to train her, she wouldn’t eat any treats and didn’t do toys. She was very timid and had had so much neglect and didn’t know anything and she would rather have died than sit or heel..lol..I was pulling my hair out! I thought it was nuts putting a prong on a hound but did it anyway and in less than 15 minutes I had the nicest heeling hound ever. 😂😂 she gets so excited when she hears me get it out! I wouldn’t use anything else on my GSD either.

      My Parents babysit my Dutch shepherd/pit mix every now and then. Mom used to say the same thing about my prong collar, "he walks just fine, I don't know why you use that cruel thing". That was until she tried walking him without it one day and he about drug her into the pond lol. He knows when he's got his "good boy collar" on and when he doesn't lol.

    Prong collar is a game changer for us..large GSD has been reactive and unruly, I haven't been able to walk him in public for a yr. He's great at a dog field but is so over stimulated outside he won't even take food..
    Prong collar arrived last week and we have walked 2 miles every day in public since.. I've got so much more control he's so much more relaxed. He will now take treats off me, walk to heal, and the lunging and barking at other dogs and people is less and less..
    Thanks for this.

      I love to hear it. I'll have delivery today and I really hope prong collar help me with my dog. He's not a big dog(a little smaller than border collie) but he's strong and it's a nightmare to walk him. He's pulling like horse and is charging at every dog. Due to social media pressure I have been raising my 4th Lab witj just flat collar and harneseses
    I have delicate hands and she is killing me. Just went back to a prong like my last three labs and power steering is back. She looks happy, and can finally feel what I am trying to communicate. No need for large corrections or jerks. I don't have to wear a hand protective glove anymore. I tried the "new" way, but have gone back to what works for me. Thanks for your fine video.

    Awesome advice! I got that martingale prong collar and it was an instant night and day difference! I only had to correct 4 times in a 2 mile walk! It was great. Before my dog was lunging at babies and strollers to go say hi. He was darting at cars. He once got loose from his normal collar and almost got hit by a car. I tried every single bit of advice for positive reinforcement but as soon as the treats were gone, he went back to his habits. I've been struggling for 6 MONTHS to train him and I finally feel like I've got a handle on it. THANK YOU SO MUCH! It was perfectly explained and I learned a lot!

    I wish more dog owners would educate themselves on what a pinch/prong collar is. People have too much judgement and not enough knowledge!!!! I had two 75 pound boxers and after a couple years of training on walks with a pinch they learned the expectation and could eventually walk them both off leash and they always remained in a heel. I thank this tool and the trainer who showed me how to use it for that behavior! I now have two golden doodles and I use a pinch on my young one because of his high prey drive. He walks wonderfully without pulling lunging etc. GREAT TOOL.

    Had some problems with my 8 month old Australian kelpie. Leash pulling biting and only listening to commands when it benefits him. Initially bought the prong just for the pulling issue since he started having signs of tracheal collapse from pulling with a regular collar. After a few weeks of use our walks have been amazing and also fixed some of his behavioral issues.Switched over to ecollar after a few months and happy to say he can walk of leash like a star and is more behaved than 90 percent of the children out there. I’ve taken my dog to a “professional” training school which does positive training approach and I will say the training information you’ve provided is what made my dog today. As a first time dog parent THANK YOU for all the free and valuable information you put on here. Keep doing what you’re doing for I truly believe this helps more owners than you might think and keeps dogs away from shelters

When i go out with them, they walk quite well but now has gone from good ro perfect. Most importantly, i can go out with my 3 year old son, because when he and my wife come with me, specially the GSD gets quite nervous, looking to everyone Who gets near to them. No i can take them everywhere without having to restrain them, just a little touch and thats It. Thank you for your job, we are going to keep working!💪🏾

    A prong collar has been a total game changer with my chihuahua mix. Yes, he’s a small dog, but this dog slips regular collars and choke chains just make him choke himself until he gags and coughs. Consistent training has improved his behavior, but only a little. He has selective hearing, so when he’s done, he’s done, and not even treats will get him to listen anymore. With the prong collar, he self-corrects as we walk and I just need the lightest tug on the leash to direct him or redirect him. No more heavy coughing and his training is progressing rapidly.

    Just took my dog on a walk with a prong collar for the first time. It was night and day, and she didn’t seem to mind the collar that much. It didnt hurt her, and she gave it lots of kisses when I took it off of her. She used to pull so hard that me, a decently healthy 24 year old, would regularly be pulled off of my balance, and my wife can’t even walk her. I have a question. I just bought the Herm Springer Prong collar for my boxer. She is about 30 pounds five months old and it fits snug around her ears, but once it’s clipped on her I can’t turn the collar around her neck to the back of her neck to clip the
      Dog leash. The dog leash is snug I can stick my fingers underneath it.I took out one prong and it’s loose enough for me to turn the collar to the back of her neck to hook the leash is that too loose? If so, what do I do because if I add the other link, it’s snug and I can’t turn the caller to the back of her neck. Also, is the leash supposed to be hooked to the back of her neck or is the leash supposed to be hooked to the right of her neck or the left of her neck? I’m so confused.

    Very good, informational video. Getting people to use them properly is incredibly important, making the handler and the dog more successful. I think sometimes people forget that training is an on going process, your dog looks to you for guidance so be consistent and firm. There is plenty of time for fun and playing too, but a good solid base will make the relationship so much better.

    I have a Goldendoodle. Loves people, and pulls like a sled dog when near them. She also loves, jumping on people. The walk is consistent. I trained all my previous dogs, with a metal choke collar. 4 to be exact. So I went to the slip lead, with my Doodle. Garbage with her longer hair. It sometimes wouldn’t release fully. I had a flat collar on her, for Id tags. She walked better but still, pulling, jumping wandering. No control or attention to me at times.
    So I bought a 2.25 Herm Springer, $30.
    Watched “introducing your dog to the collar”, videos. Adjusted the collar, to a snug fit. Went out for a walk tonight. A long one. Stopped and trained her to sit. Changed directions, many times. Without notifying her. She just turned 6 months old, btw.
    I am in “Awe”, what this collar did. My 6 month old dog, in under 5 minutes. Was in a perfect heal, left side slightly behind me. Head up, not in the grass,sniffing poles out changing directions.
    She walked beside me, like I was walking an elderly dog. Who has done the walk, a million times.
    I’m over 50 now. So I won’t have many more dogs, before I die.
    If I could start all over again. All of my dogs, would be trained on this collar. I cannot believe, what I experienced tonight.
    Funny thing is, my sister in law almost wept. When she seen, I bought this collar. There was no pain. There was attention to me, that I’ve never had with a 6 month old dog.
    I can’t wait to walk her again, on this collar.
    A game changer

The Martingale is basically just the fancy strong collar to hold her name tag and back up if the HS prong collar detaches, which has happened a few times. The Martingale, by itself, does nothing. She doesn't care if it chokes her, she'll keep pulling, spinning like a 4 legged propeller. The prong collar has made it so I can actually take my 50 lb whirlwind for a walk.

    I fully understand why my use of the HS collar failed. I literally slipped it over my pup’s head. No significant pressure even pulling it fully. I have adjusted this and have a new (surprised!) pup. Thank you so much! Saving up to get your e-collar mastery course online. I’ve fostered at least 15 pups of various ages. My current foster, about 18 months, is a border collie mix. High prey drive, which I’m working on stopping because she constantly bugs my 18 year old cat. She is also leash reactive to anything moving. She wants to sniff any person or dog. So she shows poorly to potential adopters. She would be an awesome dog for a family. But it never gets far enough for a family to appreciate her. And she knocks down smaller kids, and some adults (that would be me). I am in my 60’s and can’t have a dog pulling me down. Too many risks.

    My GSD was trained with but no longer needs his prong collar unless going into a situation we might encounter uncontrolled or off leash little yappy dogs, who he could kill if I can't intervene fast enough. We do have a lot of coyotes and coy-wolves where I live in WI, so at night in addition to other measures, if I hear them or he needs potty late I put his prong collar on WITH THE SPIKES OUT! I have zero science or data, no testing on it, but it is similar to bladed/spiked collars used by the Romans and other cultures for centuries, for this exact purpose: to keep animals or other war dogs from being able to bite into their necks.

    • @AmericanStandardK9
      @AmericanStandardK9  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, you are making very good points... I used to have the spikes out for the same reason a few years back (lots of loose-running, aggressive dogs in that town). Coy-WOLVES, you say? Wow! Well, if I lived in such an area, I'd probably get a "real" spike-collar like the ones designed for Kangals or other livestock guardians, just to be on the side, as are much wider than prong collars, and hence cover more of the dog's neck. Stay safe! - Alexandra

    • @warpdriveby
      @warpdriveby 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AmericanStandardK9 Yes, according to DNR and US Forestry service analysis (my brother runs a research station in Washington state) the further east you go in the US the higher percentage of wolf DNA is found. Pure coyotes are still found west of the Rockies, and I think into eastern Colorado and Texas. Going east from there the ratio of coyote to wolf increases as you go. This applies to about the northern half of the country, I didn't see the data for the central or eastern South, but I've heard they are not as numerous there, at least yet, but again that part is hearsay only. I have a vest and collar ordered, but I'm not too worried YET, because no dogs over 20lbs have been attacked in my area. It's tough right? We need top predators to insure the health of our ecosystems, but they can target the small, weak, and sick among us, whether it's a pet or gods forbid a child.

    I don't use them for every dog, or even for most dogs. But when I do, I actually put one on myself and let owners correct me with it, so they can see that it doesn't hurt and isn't meant to hurt. The problem is that there are a lot of people who don't have correct timing or pressure, so it's not a tool for everyone. I look at them like a surgeon's scalpel: it's a specialized tool designed to help when all other options are ineffective. But, just like a scalpel, you have to be trained how to use it properly, otherwise you can hurt someone accidentally.

    Thank you for this. I have a GSD Shar pei mix. Even though she was well socialized with other dogs and still likes other dogs when she is free to run and play, she strangely became leash aggressive once she was 2yrs old. I spent far too long trying to deal with it using treats and praise but she is not treat motivated. Once a dogs comes within 15 feet of us she becomes fixated and cannot be redirected with treats or toys. I recently got a professional trainer and he introduced us to the prong collar (we tried a normal slip lead first but she fought that too much). I was very uncomfortable with it at first because I thought collars like that were inhumane. Now I've learned that it's just a tool aid communication. When I need her attention I can get it without it turning into a chaotic shitshow where I'm yelling "no" over and over again while trying to physically drag her away from whatever she is obsessing over, while she lunges and snaps at her perceived threat. Walks are are so much calmer and I think she is happier and more confident.

      From what I've heard it's easier to start any big training at 2-3 months.
      I think that is because of the hormonal faze makes the dog feel like he's got something to prove lol.
      I have also seen many trainers with prong and e collar start as late as 6 months because at that point the dog better understands pressure better from other dogs.
      Just focus on more positive only approach until about a month and slowly introduce more corrections.
      At that point you can have the prong on but not in use so the dog gets used to just having it on, same with e collar.
      Then once the dog is ready you can start the prong first then the e collar.

I have no problem with them, but I have a brachycephalic dog, so I don’t even walk him on a collar at all, I use a front clip harness. • @Troy-Echo
      @Troy-Echo 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The point of the prong collar is it gives very clear direction to your dog with MUCH less pressure than you need on a flat collar or martingale collar. If you watch a mother with her pups, when she needs to issue a correction, it's a quick scruff grab or bite to the neck. That's what the prong collar emulates, so it literally speaks to the dog in its mother tongue. Pun intended. If you've seen Garret training dogs to walk on a leash, it may look rough, but those few corrections are all the dog needs to be 95% of the way to a perfect walk. The dog may need a few harder corrections over the next few walks as the dog goes through higher and higher levels of distractions, but the dog will walk on a loose leash for the rest of its life. Versus the same training on a flat collar would take a great deal more force. Or without training, the dog will pull on the lease for the rest of its life, and typically that's a lot of pressure on the dog's neck for the life of the dog, or the humans don't walk their dogs much because it's just no fun. I taught Echo to walk on a leash 18 months ago and she walks perfect on the walks 99% of the time. We can go past rabbits, skunks, darks barking like crazy, and she just glances at them and then ignores them, all while keeping pace with me. That 1% imperfection was when 3 deer came out in front of us. That was just more than her prey drive could tolerate. She had never seen deer, but I gave her a few corrections and she was back in a sitting position next to me. Once the deer walked away, we walked calmly to where the deer were, and since she remained calm, I freed her to go to the end of the leash and scent track the deer as far as we could until we met a property line we couldn't cross. I gave her a very gentle pop (maybe 1/4 on a 1-10 scale) to get her attention, asked her to return to a heel position, and we continued the walk with perfection.
      At DIYK9.com, Garret (the guy in the video) shows you how to use the prong collar to have your dog walking on a loose leash with manners, including classroom info, dog psychology on a walk, leash reactivity and triggers, and more. He has courses at DIYK9.com covering from puppies to off leash trained dogs. Pretty much every "correct" piece of training came from Garret and his courses.
