I bought Sword of the Vagrant on Steam for $1, this reminded me that I haven't played it yet. It's just called The Vagrant on there for some reason, but if anyone can catch it on sale it's an amazing deal for a Metroidvania with some fanservice.
I can only agree about Cosmic Star Heroine, what a great game. There are also many indie games that i would add to the list, like Nocturne: Rebirth, Battle Chasers, The Geneforge 1-5 series from Spiderweb, Reformers Intl Ver, Ghostlords, and some more. A really good video, thank you for sharing
My absolute favorite Indie RPG/Hack and Slash with RPG elements was Astlibra Revision. It is a game that keeps on giving - everytime I thought the story would be over it would pile more on top of it and expand on the storytelling, and boy, is it a damn great story being told. Check it out if games like Sword of the Vagrant looked good to you! edit: Another one that completely came out of the blue was a Chinese Turn Based RPG called Nameless Slay Dragon. It is linear, but gives you a lot of choices in smaller events throughout the game that can alter the story drastically, and although it starts very hard, once you get into it, it's very rewarding to master the combat system. As is usual for Chinese RPGs, the English translation isn't perfect, but its translation is a lot better than most Chinese Indie games and I'd say aside from a few small errors here and there, the translation is good enough, especially during dialogues.

I've had Sword of the Vagrant for years on Steam, just titled 'The Vagrant' though, since I think it got a rename when released later for consoles. Good game though, I need to go through it again one of these days. Also have Frontier Hunter (I like metroidvanias) and liked it too though haven't quite finished it yet. I think you may've spoiled some of the plot though, the plot is kicked off by a monster attack on their ship and them having to explore the place they crashed. More than that wasn't really revealed for a lot of the game. The bit with the gender identity was... Eh, and it was ultimately explained away in context of the game (beyond just the 'are you an idiot comment'.) I have Cosmic Star Heroine as well, but it's on the backlog list atm. Definitely planning on getting to it eventually.
I was super hyped for Cosmic Star Heroine because I really loved Cthulu Saves the World and Breath of Death 7, but outside of graphics the combat was and has been worse every single subsequent release using the same system that ruined it all. The CSH combat system is pretty much about stacking damage and breaks the game. The second Alyssa gets a water weapon and water amplification, the game goes from reasonably challenging on the harder difficulties to stupidly easy, it gets to the point that you can take off half of all bosses HP with Sue in a single attack or OHKO any boss with the rookie cop by just powering one of those two up for one attack. So the game is only actually good for about 1/5 of the game, the rest of the game is just too easy to be an enjoyable game. It's not as bad as their other games so it is still worth owning as a collector, but it's just okay. Here's some games I'd include in your list. Star Renegades, there's some procedural aspects to the game, but all of the main areas are the same map, the map is just randomized to the position of enemies, and items. So it's the same game every run for the most part, the equipment can slightly change, but it's 5-10 hour game and it's challenging but it's beatable on the first run(I know because I did finish it on the first run.) This isn't just one of the best indie RPGs, I'd put this on a list of the best RPGs of all time, provided it's a list of 20 games or more and doesn't include more than one of each series. Not quite as good as the above, Fell Seal Arbiter's Mark is a made by the same developer as the indie RPG Black Sigil Blade of the Exiled. It's a new development studio, but same peoplee. This is another game that is also much better in the early game than the late game, but at least half of the game this game is excellent and held a lot of promise to be better than the game's that came from its inspiration, however the further in you get and the more class unlocks, the game just becomes incredibly unbalanced and broken. It doesn't help that you kind of half to use these classes because the end game battles do and it's just too hard to go through battles with worse class builds when the enemy are using the top tier classes every map from two thirds on. It's still a great game but the experience late game is just more of an okay experience compared to the excellent experience of the early game. Then Siralim 3 and Siralim Ultimate. While Siralim 1 and 2 are no longer worth playing with the existence of Siralim 3, Siralim 3 is still worth playing due to some changes from Ultimate benig too drastic of a change. It also has other features that aren't included in Ultimate like the tavern brawl allowing you to pit your team against other players team and macros. In Ultimate, breeding creatures takes the base creature, adds one of four color variations to it based on the other creature that was used second, and the newly bred creature has the traits of both creatures, meaning that each creature can now have three traits. As amazing as this is, that is, you have six more traits for your regular party. In Siralim 3 each creature can have one trait and one weapon trait(not including nether creatures which can have a total of four.) So you have to really maximize your party build with those 12 traits, weapons, spells, and rune stones. While I would only rate these two games a 7/10 because of the concept behind them making every map procedural and repetitive, the amount of things you're newly unlocking, including new traits always has you thinking of new builds you can customize and create. The game doesn't really feel like you start getting any of the end game burn out until atleast 40-50 hours in, but then put it down for awhile and come back and it's enjoyable to run through again with all the end game challenges, etc. I've got over 100 hours and as for an indie RPG, it's a pretty great experience.

@@sidartnaogautama780 Technically, pretty much EVERY game ever made is an ''RPG'' as you literally play the role of the main characters in them, even the damn blocks/jewels/puyos from those puzzle games lol
@@martinde-serres8724 no, it's forcing too much. It's an exagerated statement on most situations where it applies. Yes, you take control of a character, but the interpretation is not the focus.
That said, you don't control characters on most puzzle games. The "characters" are just allegories.
@@sidartnaogautama780 The fuck are you talking about, ya dipshit?
You ROLE FUCKING PLAY any video game character from any genre so technically I'm right about saying that we're technically playing RPGs even when they're clearly not
You know nothing about gaming in general so STFU
