Landscape Photography | White Cliffs Dover | Slow Down, Dude!

  • In my last video, I talked about my shoot with Thomas Heaton and the things I learned. One of those things was to slow down.
    Landscape photography in particular is about finding the details. It's about finding the perfect image in a massive space. And, all too often, I spend my time racing around shooting as many images as possible rather than picking out the coolest.
    So, here at the White Cliffs of Dover, I tried to put that to the test. Rather than racing all over the place trying to grab a lot of photos, I slowed down and looked for that perfect shot. Or, at least the best one.
    Of course, landscape photography is also all about capture the right light, and I was in for a fight with the White Cliffs over light. First, it really started raining hard - which actually improved the light - and then it cleared up. The light went from harsh, to beautiful, to raining, to beautiful, to harsh again all in a couple minutes. But, I fought through it. And, I actually got a pretty epic scene at one point as a perfect rainbow formed from one end of the horizon to the other.
    The White Cliffs of Dover are actually quite challenging to shoot. Like a lot of landscape photography locations, it's just really hard to capture the scale. So, I struggled a bit with that. But, eventually I found a couple simple compositions I really liked. There are certain places that you just need to keep simple, rather than think too much. The White Cliffs are sort of like that.
    By the time the light disappeared, I think I got more than 1 cool image. And, I know, the goal of today was to focus on making just one image. And, I did that. So, the other 2 or 3 photos of The White Cliffs I got were just a bonus.
    This landscape photography tutorial is full of tips, and I hope they're useful. But, as is always the case, if you have any questions feel free to leave them in the comments here on TH-cam. I'll get back to as many as I can.
    Also, this is the last of my photography vlogs from here in England. I had full intentions of going out shooting in Canterbury tomorrow, but rain is on the forecast. So, instead it'll be my monthly round up.
    Then, I'll be headed back home for a bit.
    Lots of amazing landscape photography locations in Canada; so, obviously, I'm looking forward to going back and shooting a couple different locations.

    I just wanted to say welcome to all the new mother photographers who have subbed!
    You have all been so awesome, and supportive. Thank you!
    Also, we need a hashtag? Any ideas? I think #ridiculous needs to be in it?

      Come on man, this has to be #ridiculousson - from a new sub via Mr Heaton who has religiously watched all your videos over the past two days... love it!

      Hahaha, I like both of them.
      And, yeah, it will just be a way for the community to keep up with each other. And, maybe some contests.

      Debby, I use the terms guys & dudes in a totally non-gender manner. I would refer to a group of my gril friends as guys, or dudes. But, I get the point.
      Also, I've got a video soon about female photographers, and the MANY problems caused by male photographers in the field when women photographers are around. I'm always blown away by the amount of patronizing that is aimed at the women out shooting when they are usually equally/more talented than the men. It's infuriating to me. And FYI, most of my favourite photographers are female.
      So, I totally get your point. Totally agree with you... but when I say guys, I'm not meaning "men".

    I admire the energy and happiness you send out with your vlogs even while you are alone out there, you speak to your camera as i would speak to my best friend while having a great time.
    It is clear that Thomas Heaton inspired you a lot, awesome pics you made there at the cliffs.
    Promise me you will have proper hiking shoes in Iceland, will you?
    I enjoy following you, thanks and keep it up !

    Found your channel after watching you with Thomas Heaton. Great stuff and what a great location all I could hear was the Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson as you did this vlog. I live just outside St. John's, NL I hope you have a great time on your stop in Newfoundland! Lots of spots for you to get a great image in NL. If your looking for one of the standard tourist spots go to Signal Hill but there are many sites to see. Check out the downtown area in St. John's and George Street which you will find interesting for sure.

    Great video...Brendan you were so close I thought your next video would be from here in Ireland...now your jumping over us to newfound land....😔
    You are missing epic landscapes here!
    I had the luck to attend a wedding once in Newfoundland ...ask someone about the cliff walk in at St. John's harbour ...Takes you on a wooden platform attached to the side of the cliff...overlooking the main entrance to St. John's harbour...ends at signal hill....(trivia coming 😂) were the distress calls from the titanic were first received... it over looks ice berg alley ...but your too early to see the ice bergs floating by....see for an Irish man I wasn't too drunk to the wedding to take in a bit of information !! Great videos keep them coming ...big Brendan v s and Thomas h fan...great collaborations!

      Cool I live just outside and mentioned in another comment to go to this exact spot. The Signal Hill Trail will have many great spots. Your too late for Ice Bergs now though they come in May / June. Lots of ripe blueberries on the go now though.

      @briw1286 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those cliffs erode by about one foot per year and collapses are common, I would not be getting that close to the edge...... If you really want good shots of the white cliffs, you should go to Beachy Head (Eastbourne), the angles to shoot from are far better.

      Brendan van Son haha no not that literal. Cornwall is just a stunning part of England, dramatic landscapes/seascapes some lovely hidden relics in the small pockets of woodland and much more. Next time you come to the UK put it on your list

  • @5avan10

    A few feet of parachord and an aluminum tent stake can go a long way to alleviating your concerns about your gear going over a cliff. In this situation the chord alone would work, tied off to that fence. BTW, the second shot with the rainbow was ridiculously beautiful.

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably would work, yup. BUT, I'd probably just forget it in the car anyways. haha.

    Hi, just came here from Thomas Heaton videos... I really like your vlogs, so natural and interesting - I just have a problem with the style of your photos... landscape especially. What's with the vignetting? Is it just something in the video, is it just your style and you like it? It is very visible at 9:18 but I think it was even worse in the videos with Thomas.

      Hi Brendan, if you wanted to split hairs you could say its South East. Was just thinking careful with standing on these type of cliffs as they are very crumbly, there was a 50,000 ton cliff fall about 3 weeks ago!
