In this video we look at what trance is all about.
i give you a demonstration on how to mix it and what to look for in constructing the perfect set.
toons are
left cdj, coast to coast featuring le salphoenix "cut me" , right cdj, corin Morley " enlightenment"
Mixing trance is like telling a story you don't rush it coz the sky is the limit!!
16 years later and this is still helpful. Building my dj skills on old forgotten trance vinyl and this vid helps!
I can't believe how many different setups this guy has. Equipment isn't cheap but it is like hes got one for each room!
Finally someone understands how trance mixes are supposed to be!
Nostalgia galore
Dude, you're a good teacher
Yeah mate totally, Judge Jules explains mixing trance better than anyone! There are points in songs that have been placed there by the producers as sort of mix points! Use the breakdowns and use filters on them as well that can sound really cool! If you watch some Eddie Halliwell Cream videos, he does that all the time! From my experience of mixing trance, work the breakdowns, be great at beatmatching, and use your EQ! Then use different filtering fx to create "mix points" so to speak!
Where I can find JJ explaining how to mix ? Thanks
Thank you very much, sir. I was looking for this exact explanation, someone just breaking it down, showing me, and then wrapping it up. Brilliant. You've inspired me to go ahead and find a nice controller and get to work
on that particular mixer jonathan is using there is buttons above each of his channels called "CUE", basicly whatever cue buttons are pressed are in the headphones regardless of what the fader levels are at, so if you have the fader up on track A, fader down on track B, CUE button on both pressed, the crowd will hear track A, your headphones will hear both
@DjAotaka not 100% true, most commercial Trance is yes, but even in 1998 and earlier there were tunes at 132 BPM. There are still 135-142 BPM tunes out there just not as much on the huge labels anymore. Just look further than Armada and Anjuna and there are loads of 135+ BPM tracks still being released. More than 132 BPM to be honest.
Considering this video is 4yrs old its still applies today. Good to see things like that
@gulyzor that's what headphones are for. he sets the second track to the same bpm (tempo) as the first one (the mixer will tell you which each cd player is in) and then he cues up the 2nd cd player so that when he hits the cue button, it lands on a beat. he then matches beats by hitting cue on the same beat of the first CD player.
hi, to be honest it can apply to any style, but the likes of trance ,hard house and psy trance i feel it is better to play the whole toon.
j
remember just my opinion
dagadagadagadaga... yeah man, well said, this is the essence of trance, the baseline, and, of course, the strings; these tracks are made to give you the impression of high speed flying so they go well with flanger effects
you are the best tutor in dj'ing ik now. you tell everyting that I understand it!
love the vids you're posted. love seeing djs who have fun doing their thing cuz there's sooo many djs that in my opinion take themselves too seriously
that advise of trying to make a track with all the set is a very good idea, Thank's man
thats called HARMONIC MIXING
Thank you Jonathan for this video. I'm trying to become a trance DJ myself and it's nice to refer you and your vidz for help. Thank you again. Love the track selection as well.
i always get this imbued with enthusiasm when i listen to you!!! thanks!
To be honest if you learn the basics of mixing trance music and then buy our own equipment, the best thing to do is simply spend hours and dedicate time to getting used to the equipment and creating your own style.
Thats how a great individual DJ normally makes it out of the ranks.
I am buying myself a $300 Numark dj in a box set for Xmas just for hobby. If I get better, and people like what I do I will think about upgrading into a setup like yours :)
I think I understand how to mix trance now... Its pretty much making song out of many tracks (trance) that sound the same but make your own rises, fall, etc.
Yes your right I still love trance music and always will Armin Van Buuren is fantastic and listen to all armada label complations in the gym and in my car. As a DJ however I prefer mixing Prog House.
thank you for your videos. your videos have helped me out djing.
Its pretty easy to mix a trance mix as oposed to funky house etc..just make sure they are in beat at same bpm..can be slighly more challenging on only vinyl but only slighly..great videos cant stop watching them:P ..you made quite a name for yourself
@donzaliko and I am happy that YOU were born, and have registered on TH-cam, cuz that was a funny comment and it made my day. Thanks.
In my opinion, it varies from song to song, I've done complete sets of progressive house with both basses on fully, without even touching them, the thing is, most of the time the basslines were either almost identical or they complemented each other completely. If there was a disruption or clashing bass lines, then I just didn't mix them together (I'm not a fan of messing with EQ's to mix).
Agree with the comments below. In trance tracks there are certain points made specially for mixing, keep an eye out for them and you will have great transitions. That is if you choose the tracks well and have a good playlist. Trance is more about choosing the right tracks in the right continuity, if u do this well you will have great succes.
well said!!... and a very important point that MOST of the "dj's" miss completely with the learning curve shortened as much as it has with the technology available today...
Ellaskins this is the first vid ive watched of yours and ill deffo be watching the rest, great quality and great tutorials.
good mix man, very educational. when someone knows their profession, just to look at them is "out of this world". good trance too. need more educational vids like this sir. thaks again.
Damn youre good. I love these tuitorials. What about when the bpm goes up and down alot?
Yeah that's a tough one I can't stand not knowing the bpm of my next track I've been spoiled by my virtual djay software that analyzes track & key but even then still sometimes ya need to transition more than 10%+or- bpm. Playing tracks in key is one half he was trying to explain about how they'll sound alike armin did a lil lesson on doing this using que points pre-cues & how he marks all his CDs with the track ID 1 per cd and the key & bpm. Helpful but not for transitions outside of the 10% -or+ bpm either way is so difficult this is what causes me to train wreck multiple times or stay hitting the cheat sync button which still doesn't work so well somehow they don't get past 0.00 beats they should probly go to milliseconds to maybe 0.000 at least or 0.0000 for example 2 tracks that are 130.17bpm one maybe 130.179 & the other 130.170 or even 13.1798:137.1701 but the bpm on the software only going over 0.00 wouldn't detect this slight difference so 2 tracks that appear to be the exact same bpm maybe off by nearly a milisecond or less & it really affects it some 8-16+ bars later they start to get out of sync and using the auto cheat match sync bpm button only makes things worse as it'll try to fix it but ends up making them noticeably off and the horse gallop train wreck of bpm can be heard. It's even harder without a headphone option. Also auto sync cheat buttons can really screw up the pitch or tone key etc. of say a song that's 60-80bpm and a 128-132bpm song it'll make the vocals sound way too deep or like chipmunks & the beat is not in sync at all but sounds like a totally new song in a bad way unpleasant to the ear besides in very rare cases like nearly any song off W&W's mainstage album can sound like an amazing slow down tempo chill track when slowed down so much but it's hard to find songs that do so yet a great trick to use in the production of trance music is to start around like 30bpm create a riff then speed it up if it still sounds good as its tweaked and slowly brought up in tempo till 138-140bpm then the track should sound good at nearly all within that range but I am having the same problem with these specific transitions from +or-10bpm than the track I'm currently playing & we don't always have time to gradually bring the bpm up by 1bpm per song like 1-3 or even 5bpm is harder to notice any change compared to 10+ more bpm changes. Idk if this is even a helpful comment lol it's less than helpful but hopefully it helped someone learn something, I learned something about why songs that seem like the exact same bpm will still get way out of sync and quickly by writing it for some reason I learned there needs be at least 1 more decimal place in bpm detection, display, and matching software lol.
i do hardstyle, so this is really useful to me as well. basic same concept and ideas
ye although im anti cdjs,,the ideas are endless of what mood u wanna set ,when i play trance ,im the same ,i like to just keep it never ending bangin ,with just the odd break.keep it flowing,,u tend to get more breaks in my prefered style(progg house)which verges on the borders of trance,,the only difference i think is with the progg house,u get more oppurtunities to change the mood and style ,to produce more up n downs ,its even better ,when u can mix the 2 styles together
its very nice! ive been learn a lot, just by looking 2 movies!
Hey, this guy makes it sound to hard, but if you got the love and the talent it comes natrual, i believe less talk and more hands is what people really need,
Trance sets now, I'm seeing 50 tracks on average in a 2 hour set...I feel it's too rushed. There's no proper build up. No journey that put you in a "trance" is diminished. Those rolling baselines don't have the same power if you don't give it time ......
Agreed! For hardstyle/techno then mix as many as possible but for trance just keep the mixes simple and let the music play!
From Mexico... Thankyou very much dude x)
Excellent! thanks so much !
Thanks so much man, this is one of the best channels on youtube. Only advice would be to try and pack a little more punch with less talking and more "doing" cause watching it done is the best way to learn I think. BUT you do both, thats great for some people. God bless
I know right. This guy is really cool for helping everyone
Very educational! Your vid really helped me understand mixing trance better.
Your videos and speaking style are really good, thanks for uploading!
Nice video. If youre in need of video ideas you could totally do an updated version of mixing trance with a focus on more modern slower bpm trance!
Yeah what's up with that trend these days? Trance used to stay above 140-180bpm especially the acid psy-trance. But these days we've got as low as 60bpm and the highest I've detected was 211bpm. Not complaining.
Trance never faster then 140 you mean hardcore or gabber!??
Trance at 180+, never heard any at that speed, Trancecore (Freeform) maybe. Trance normally sits between 120-140bpm
Though hard trance i think has been slightly faster than this.
I always drop back to Johns channel here for tips & a refresh, his tutorials are a lifeline to so many, so hats off John :)
Kronicilln3ss Psytrance even goes up to 250BPM on the psycore/hi-tech end of the genre.
well... the good shit is at 138-140 ;)~
I never plan on being a DJ , but this video was very informative ! job well done.
Dude,You ARE A LEGEND!
harmonized mixing is important with Trance, most specifically , because the dj is keeping the same key , same tempo from track to track, and not have harsh transitions that jar the floor in any way due to them being in incompatible keys ..IN trance mixing, it's about making gradual key changes by going with key of A and the next song being G...since those sound right together those can be used if you don't wanna stay in A forever..If you know keys on a piano/keyboard this will help.. Zenya.com can aid you with this..
Each DJ has his own way of playing different tracks and sets. Why dis the bloke all this info is free. I have been DJing for 30 years and watching this for the new technology and not how to mix. I make my own mind about that when I play the promo at home
wow yeah that was a pretty smooth transition
Hey nice johnathon im sure armand van buuren would have liked that keep it up
You can decide what you listen on your headphones, deck A, deck B, mix and sometimes there's also a split function
This is the most helpful video I've ever seen, gonna practice asap! Cheers
i know that the first track's name is :
Coast 2 Coast ft. Le Sal and Phoenix - Cut Me [John O'Callaghan Rework]
Great video, Thanks mate helped me out loads.
@karimmaged90 thats where i use effects and wacky filters to bring the another trance in, its crazy man but i cant tell you a ceratin technique its all about the tracks, you can mix a nice house break with a trance break while you get the pitch up on the house track, thats what i normally try
Dude I really would like to meet you in person! you're giving the world great advises about djing, nd I would be proud that I've met you (if I do) . =)
keep it up
your an absolute legend, keep up the great work
hi man!! love trance
drop the bass...

Nice tutorials you ´ve been doin here.
Drawr a picture... Love ti. Thanks for the tutorial. Helped. =D
I totally agree with you, keep up the good work!
@srekal88 What if im 15 and i live in a rural area >.> what then bud what then? This is here as a resource for those who cant watch a mix live. It may not be ideal for you but for those who cant go to a club or some other type of show its great. I learn so much more from these vids as well because he actually explains every last detail. I dont care if people learned from observation before youtube and online tutorials and there is nothing wrong with using new resources that are out there now.
Sweet sound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
about the necessary thing - that you need a kinda clear beat that u can use to mix within another similar track... you can also find a clear spot even if it's short and just repeat the small section let's say with only 4 beats can't you? than when it's running long enogh you can let it go. man hope you know what I mean :D I suck at explaining
another great tutorial, well done man, you do excellent videos.
@SiIXEN037 2-3000ish (AUD) it all depends on how much you already know and how serious you are about it, also depending on the venues/events you want to look at getting into and the genre you're looking at you may want different players/mixers than if you were playing at a different place or playing different styles, keep exploring videos and keep asking questions!!
pumpupumpa all over the place! haahha nice video, you give me inspiration
I know what you mean, depends on the track though - I find hard house or hard trance is best like that, I try to be more subtle when I'm onto floatier stuff.
Awesome video, great tunes and keep them coming!! thanks
Its awesome..... i learning a lot of him =)
you make some valid points
EMOTIONAL/UPLIFTING FTW!!
Hey mate do your record mixes, would be great to hear the variety of your Dj mixes
hey nive johnathon im sure armand van buuren would liked that keep it up
dude ellaskins is the man...
@tombarca24 pitch control..there's no auto-sync button like on Virtual DJ
actually they're all 165 bpm to be exact, some are rarely 150 bpm but usually they're 165 because it's more progressive than compared to hard trance and hardstyle which is 138 - 145 a real peice of piss to mix so no worries in mixing them at all really . What I founded useful in mixing prog trance is that I set the pitch on a low level on the plus side (i.e +2 or +5%) that way when you mix em in order you can actually estimate the pitch properly.
Many thanx Psychrobatic will do RESPECT!
BIG IT UP
Nice vid dude! But I think that you should put the camera overhead for a better view (let me know if I'm wrong in my english, please)..
:D
you are awesome dude

again nice vid. and sweet shirt !
gotta love it..... THANKS ALOT!!!!!
Wow! Thanks! I'd really like to make some trance!!!! I'm impressed by that staff that Djs use. And trance music is the best in the whole world, I fell always so free when I'm listening to Tiësto or van Buuren or every else good-sounding-trance-track. Could you tell where I can find these things you have? And what about price of this? If I want some good one, but not too expensive, could you give me some tips, brands etc.?:) Thank you in advance!:)
nice thanks,
have you done / will do a "how to mix trance -> electronic " vid? :)
