  • Can you use Vaseline (petroleum jelly) in the place of rosin flux when soldering? In this video I attempt to re-flow two connections that had broken over time with my soldering iron and Vaseline.

    After misplacing my paste flux, I found this video and tried the petroleum jelly as a flowing flux to solder 2 wires and as far for flowing the solder it doesn't work as a flux, it just globbed and actually caused the solder to ball up to where I had to clean the connection and resoldered without... So this will be considered false information in my line and not recommended.

      Violin rosin is hard, not like soldering flux. If you try melting it, it will become very tacky, and probably burn to your iron.
      Violin rosin is meant to rub off as a powder onto the bow, which goves the bow hair more traction on the strings, thus creating the sound.
      Also, I just realized, I don't think you'll ever see violin roswin in a pharmacy.

      @@marktwain3531 That's nonsense. Rosin dissolved in isopropyl alcohol is the basic formula for electronics soldering flux that has been use for many decades. It's not some backyard substitute, it's the basis of the actual product you would be sold as soldering flux, and many of us prefer to buy it in its hard, undissolved form. I wouldn't recommend bow rosin simply because the rosin sold for that purpose is too expensive, presumably it's a different grade. I can buy pure activated rosin, sold for the intended purpose of soldering flux, by the kilo here in electronics stores.

      @@Degenerate76 The flux I use is not alcohol based, nor is it easy to find alcohol based flux here (for that reason). And if you're replying to the violin rosin, no, it would not make a good rosin. I knw this because I've been playing the violin for years, and know what the rosin is made out of. It is essentially a processed tree sap, and would burn very easily.

  • @azmrblack

    The answer is no. It doesn't carry the oxides away. From reddit: "...only performs the function of keeping air out of the joint but none of the de-oxidation that rosin flux does. You can technically solder with petroleum jelly but it would be the same as just soldering without flux or petroleum jelly, lol. It gives zero benefit."

    • @venertalis
      @venertalis  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh yeah I remember reading that reddit page a while back. Well, depends on how you look at it. I mentioned at the end of the video that there are no de-oxidizing properties in vaseline, as you mentioned. From my own experience I would argue that using vaseline is a definite step above soldering dry, but certainly not at all a long-term replacement for rosin.

  • @maidsandmuses
    @maidsandmuses ปีที่แล้ว +17

    It won't work and you have shown it doesn't work. Whilst it may _feel_ OK, it is clear from the lack of the convex shape of the solder bridge that the solder hasn't wetted to the pins. That's no surprise as the main function of solder rosin is to provide a heat-activated acid that removes any oxide layer so the solder can wet to the substrate. That is a poor solder joint that can be visually easily identified as a fail even if it _feels_ secure. For electronics soldering the simple solution is to use a rosin-cored solder; no extra rosin needed. Good ones are non-corrosive in their cold state but best practice is to remove the excess rosin anyway afterwards.

    0:00 - 0:12 Flux’s thermal conductivity properties are secondary at best. That’s not what flux’s purpose is.
    0:15 “rosin also has deoxidizing properties”… Yeah, that’s its entire purpose: to remove oxides and prevent the formation of new ones.
    0:35 Vaseline is _not_ superficially similar to rosin: rosin is a hard, brittle, plastic-like resin. Rosin-based _flux_ comes in multiple forms, including liquid (doesn’t resemble room-temperature Vaseline at all) and paste (which does have a similar texture, because it often uses Vaseline as the filler: the Vaseline is not the active ingredient!). Choosing a substitute based not on the active ingredient, but on tangential properties of the finished product is idiotic. It’s like saying “I’m out of heart medication, but these other pills look similar, so let’s try them and see how it goes!” or “I’m out of flour, but I found this plaster of paris in my garage that looks like a white powder, too, so I’ll use that in my cookies instead.”
