I currently have two black helmets, both with, 'Old Not Dead' stickers and less than three years old. One for summer and one for bad weather or winter, when riding my Street Glide. The LS2 OF599 Spitfire, classic bobber style, 3/4 open face with a darkened visor and a Harley Davidson Velo H34 full face. They both fit perfectly, and I also wear bluetooth enabled behind the ear hearing aids (volume turned down), to help keep things quiet. I rarely wear the Velo, though it is handy to have when required. When using the open face, I wear Ugly Fish glasses, with any of three different lens types and I've found the glasses do cover some on my peripheral vision. Hence why, whichever helmet I am wearing, I always conduct a proper head check before changing lanes. I am an old navy sailor and live by the adage. 'Look Astern Before You Turn'. Cheers on another good video.

I'm an old fart who has done more k's than a sane bloke should do. I have worn both half and full face for many years, both have their pro's and cons, half face suck when you get caught in a hail storm or get caught behind a truck carting gravel or sand. full face suck in the middle of summer when its 40c+. However I have chewed bitumen too many times to not wear a full face, and I have a face now because I was lucky enough to chose a full face on those days.

Similar. I only wear full face since they came available in the 70’s. It made sense.
Full and modular have more ventilation today it makes so much difference, crack the visor open the top and rear vents and you feel the wind blowing through drawing the heat.

I have a full face shoei gt air 2. I have always had full face helmets. They are pretty versatile and have the best protection. I am very interested in a modular helmet for long distance road trips. It allows you to drink whatever you want while riding. Right now with the full face I have to stop, take it off, have a drink, then I can carry on. The full face is just fine for my ride to work and home or going light shopping. the 3/4 helmets are nice for slow speed riding in a city around town in the summer. Take the windshield off the bike throw on some shades and cruise around. I ride mostly on highways so I don't wear a 3/4 that much.

I'm in eastern Washington USA, and I wear a full face probably 95% of the time. The other is an open face like yours. My reasons are mostly that I love my in helmet audio and I have been down once before that would have been very, very bad if I weren't in a full face Shoei. I currently run a Ruroc Atlas 4.0 with the Harmon Kardon audio and really like it. In a few years I will most likely go to the EOX with the new Cardo setup, but who knows. I like this one enough to give it at least a few more seasons.

i run a couple of different helmets depending on the weather and where I'm going. A Shoei J-cruise 3/4 helmet with face shield is my go to most of the time. Quiet and comfortable with a flip down tinted lens. For a full face I have an Arai Profile-V which is quiet and comfortable. I also have a HD Maywood. The Maywood is quite noisy but has the advantage of a sun visor peak and a flip down tinted lens.

I run an open face probably 80% of the time. I live in Maine and even in early summer it's often pretty cold in the early morning when I'm headed to work and the full face is just more comfortable. I have good visibility in my full face and there's a flip down sun visor so I don't have to worry about switching out the shield. My full face is an Indian branded Aegis and my open face is a Scorpion Evo Covert.

I have an HJC i90 modular helmet. One of my favorite features is the drop-down sunshield (separate from the visor, which is clear) built into it.
Last season I rode in jeans, t-shirts, inadequate boots, and a half-helmet. This year I've decided to put emphasis on personal safety so I'm wearing the HJC modular, an armored mesh jacket, legit CE-rated boots and gloves, and Bohn Body Armor pants under my jeans - armored from head to toe. I'm basically a knight now. :)

I have both, 'Open face'(Jet Helmet with rubber chin peace) and a modular helmet so you can ride with an open face if you want.
Open face is perfect for cruise rides, not really riding too hard and 'preferably' avoiding the freeway.
When hitting the freeway often and longer at higher speeds and not to forget expecting rainy weather or low temperatures, I wear the Modular one... I wear glasses so it helps in bad weather combined with the pin-lock system.

Alberta canada. I wear full face only, always. In my younger years wore open face. Got tired of rain, hail , bugs, cold, safety. I wear a shoei Neotec 3 flip front with drop down visor. Love It.
In my older years, i now wear glasses when riding. Dont need prescription sunglasses and dont need to change visors. Vision is perfect. Venting is ok and i dont need to lather up with sunscreen. I ride a lot in southern U.S. in winter. Temps can get very hot and i still find the helmet comfortable enough. Not perfection, but it works for me. I will never go back to open face.

I had a Harley Pilot for several years which gave me the option of full face and open but when the chin guard was off the sides of the helmet would catch the air and force my head back. So after 5 or 6 hours of riding I couldn't move my neck. Now I have a Bell Broozer same design but a better fit and doesn't catch the air.

I wear an open face helmet with a windshield. Full face helmets have always made me a little claustrophobic, my chin often touches the inside of the helmet. Attended a meeting of our IAM group. Guest speaker was an audiologist. Riding in a full face helmet at 70mph for more than 10 minutes without hearing protection exposes your hearing to noise levels that cause irreversible hearing damage.
Something to think about? A lot of my group bought custom plugs, I prefer disposables as l am prone to losing stuff.
A quiet helmet to start with is always a good idea. Fixed open vents can be really noisy.
Riding in hot 🔥 climates with a black/dark fullface helmet, not for me! Cooking your skull can lead to poor decisions.

Depends on the weather. When it's hot I wear a police half helmet, when it cools off i go back to the full face. My last bad crack up I was wearing a full face . As I left home that morning I had a choice, "Full , or half ?" I picked the full face which was a good thing because during the crack up I slid 50 yards through somewhat tall grass and water in a highway median strip. As I was sliding through the grass, I hit a heavy rusty steel bracket while wearing my full face helmet. I would have been severely injured or worse. The BMW I was riding was totaled. I got up covered with mud and grass, but I didn't have a scratch on me. The helmet was destroyed and it it probably saved my life. As a matter of fact it happened this month 20 years ago. 🙂

Been riding for decades always full face helmet. Felt like a change recently and almost ordered an open face except they didn't have my size. Bought a new Arai with the latest safety cert instead. 2 weeks later had a pheasant fly into my face at 70mph. Suffered concussion, loose teeth and bloody nose. The impact cracked the chin bar but I don't think I would still be around if they'd had my size in the open face option. Lesson learned.

I ride year-round, weather permitting - cold temps are not the issue (thank you Gerbing) but I avoid snow and ice covered roadways. From late autumn (November here in the US - New York's Hudson River Valley) until spring (mid-April), I currently rock the Schuberth C5 modular. I also wear it in warmer weather when putting down long-milage days on the super-slab (Interstate Highways). Otherwise, I prefer an open-face helmet like my HJC IS-Cruiser.

Nice! I have the older version of the Glamster and really like it. I’m short in stature so most full face helmets make me look like a bobble-head. The low profile on the Glamster keeps me from looking totally ridiculous. And it’s super light which is a bonus. I have not had any issue with it fogging up. Haven’t even installed the pin-lock as of yet. Probably something to do with the Texas climate.

Year after year I seem to put about 5 to 6000 miles on my Street glide special during riding season up here in the Pacific North West , about 5 years ago I spent about $1100 on a SHOEI NEOTEC modular and then had to add the blue tooth music THEN had to upgrade the speakers , I wore it maybe 3 or 4 times when I got it then after the forth time I put it on the shelf with my old helmets that I don't wear anymore and it's been sitting on that shelf ever since . I bought a MICRO DOT helmet that same day for a about 120 bucks one of the smallest and lightest helmets I could find .PERFECT .Now I can hear the stereo again , the birds singing , the train off in the distance , and it creates a zone called TOTAL AWARENESS of your surroundings , a lot like when I got certified for scuba diving Riding is to be enjoyed not to be feared , and that's all I think when when I hear you guys talk about all the CRAP you wear. I know shit happens but if your that paranoid , DRIVE A FUCKING CAR !!! but wear that seat belt !!!

60 years ago, almost to the month I began my riding experience and I’m learning something new to this day. I was taught to ride by a professional association and have taken refreshers periodically and for a brief spell qualified and practiced as an instructor.
I agree totally with the comment….”Riding is to be enjoyed not feared.”
I have worn all manner of helmets, ridden competitively off, professionally on tarmac and trained to advance standards, in all weathers and throughout the seasons, leaving the bike in the garage when snow or ice makes it impossible, read stupid.
I heard tales from others of 15 miles or so when they complained bitterly of incidents where on numerous times throughout their journey were put at risk by other road users. For their journey of 15 miles (or so) mine on the same day would be 105 exactly, long before all the current speed restrictions and “progressed” throughout without incident. That journey to the “local” dealer was done probably, on average twice every month for a number of years until they moved even further away.
Apart from riding off road, I’ve had three disagreements with tarmac in 60 years, not one of those involved another vehicle but diesel, mud and bovine slurry was the major contributor….my own fault to some extent also for being on the bike on that day. Had I stayed at home?????
For many years 25k miles per annum was about average, long distances across continents, fully laden.
Not once has the chin guard on a full face helmet been damaged. Had loads of divorces from the bike off road, again, the chin guard has never been damaged.
On my very first riding course, the instructors introduction spelled out his intentions to teach those in attendance the ability to arrive at our destination safely and quickly, a combination of speed and awareness.
I no longer ride off road, my bones break too easily but still enjoy riding on tarmac and continue to ride “progressively” where and when it is legal to do so.
I recently had a discussion with a guy about 15 years my junior who was considering changing his current air bag vest to another with micro chip control at an eye watering cost. My question to this is “Where do you stop?”
Everyone rides nowadays with bikes fully illuminated with a cluster of lights, so inconsiderate to others in my opinion and unnecessary, high visibility clothing mirroring workers repairing the highway in the hope this gear will prevent an accident.
Statistically it may but again, proper training will far outweigh the need to rely on being seen. See for yourself the hazards around you and take the action necessary to prevent a mishap.
We ride two wheeled computers with traction control, abs, rain mode, lean angle notification and all manner of electronic gadgetry, all in the hope it will save our lives when all it is doing is increasing the cost of purchase and providing false confidence plus the opportunity to boast.
Back to helmets. Open or full face? Keep yourself fit, healthy, supple, nimble and learn how to fall. Ride what you prefer and enjoy yourself.
As a certain American politician once said “Shit happens!” Yes, indeed, he was right but with preparation and the careful use of laxatives, you can ensure you only “shit” in the lavatory at the right time. Yes, you can be taken by surprise but if neurosis plays a major part in your everyday life, stay at home, eat pizza, drink beer, smoke coccaine and die young.
Having a cavalier approach to safety is downright foolish but being intent on doing everything to a high standard, riding skills included, will help you enjoy every day until you cannot…..for whatever reason.
Just keep those big black rubbery rings beneath you and you’ll be fine, be aware there are a large number of inexperienced riders/drivers out there, don’t be one of them.
YES. “Riding is to be enjoyed, not feared.” Well said.

If you are doing highway and are not anticipating much inner city traffic, a quality fitting and made helmet with aerodynamic properties allows you to ride many additional hours per day not like you are in a blast furnace wind tunnel! But often full face give you less peripheral vision, all designs are different and the face port hole is important and additionally how far the front of the helmet sticks out which can also limit your vision. Flip ups( modular) have advantages and disadvantages.. but it's best to have someone move objects from behind you, you facing straight forward and looking straight ahead and see exactly when objects appear to the side of you. Some helmets allow you to look nearly 90 degrees to your left and right using your eyes and not turning your head away from the road. I have an expensive Japanese brand helmet and German helmet that have terrible noise cancelling because of quirky padding and face shield.. and if you look for a helmet and it doesn't have a clear face shield option don't buy it . and if shield is not easily removed don't buy it. Harbor Freight and other hardware stores sell cloth polishing wheel kits for @$7-8 dollars US, you can use the included paste to buff out small scratches in your shield or use toothpaste..it will make it like new. Turtle Wax..Wax and Dry is a spray on car wash liquid that you apply when car is wet. An accidental discovery is that it works as good or better than RainX for making water bead up and fall away and keeps helmet shield from fogging up and keeps it cleaner..@$6 bucks..

I wear a Shark EVO II. It is the ONLY helmet so far that I’ve had that fits my head shape. It is a modular helmet so it offers 3 modes. Full Face, Chin Guard Up/Visor Down, Chin Guard Up/Visor Up. Even in full face mode it is a noisy helmet. It is heavier. It is well ventilated. It does offer a pin lock. I rarely wear a helmet unless going on a long trip. It does not integrate well with my communication system. The lining has a big issue staying in with a wire being run underneath it. I’d give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Former HWP officer. Full face only. Seen rider crashes with stuffed chins. Not pretty. Full face is quieter too and way more protection from road debris. 😎👍

I went back to full face from half face in the early 90s after a bee sting on my cheek left me blind for a few days with massive face swelling. At the time I was working helping Acquired Brain Injury sufferers (wheelchair bound, can't speak) which haunted me somewhat, promoting me to go back to full face as well. Earlier in 85, I had a head on collision with a sandstone wall and if I hadn't worn a full face back then, I'm guessing i might have needed major facial and dental reconstruction. Strangely, after that I got into cruisers and went conformist running the half face. A question one could ask oneself is, who wants their face to be a meat crayon on the road, ending up with a face looking like a smashed crab, just to look "cool"?
    Not me.
    Greetings from Tassie 🇦🇺

Since I'm getting back into riding after a 9 year break I'm going full right now with an HJC I-10. Problem is that I also wear glasses so I'm getting double fogged up. Going to switch to a modular soon after scrounging some cash

I've got both types, my full face is a flip up version and my open face I use with a visor which clips up in stages depending on how open i want it to be.

I have both. I prefer my full face on long highway rides. It’s a more modern style than you reviewed, but I have good ventilation. I feel more confident with a full face on, and although I know it’s not what most Harley riders prefer, I recommend it. I don’t really rock a helmet at all when it’s a more local ride, so there you go, hypocrisy in action.

After seeing the impact zones outlined on a helmet in all beginner classes I have taken I would never wear anything less than a modular helmet. I have also been hit around the face shield with enough bugs to never try any type of open face helmet.

Love open face but as you say in winter it can be a little bit too open even with a mask. Masks can get soaked to the core in heavy rain and you struggle to breathe and being so wet they end up dripping down your neck. No mask and you hit hail and it’s like bee stings.. A good ratchet visor full face is definitely worth it for winter… One day they’ll invent an open face with a full transition lens visor so it tints during the day and then is clear at night. No changing visors half way through a day to night ride.. maybe I’m onto something here 😂 another great vid I think I’ll have to now invest in some OND merch..👌

I have 2 Biltwell Lane Splitter helmets, one black & the other the "Rusty Butcher" edition & both are awesome..... But mostly safer. Has a great look especially for the Dyna Bro's.
I would never caught dead in a Shoei as over priced & very standard design & you pointed out the crap design for the visor.
Just go full face 24-7 as it isn't worth loosing your jaw in a motorcycle accident

    I am 57 years old,
    my last motorcycles were a Goldwing 2021, RT1250 2022, and currently, I have a Ducati Multi V2S 2023 and a little Monkey!
Just in the past 10 years, I have bought about 12 helmets! (this is insane, never happy until now)Half, 3/4, full, modular standard, and flip-back LS2 Valiant(way too big!! BEACH BALL). I mostly ride with a windshield, and of course in the summer. Full-face helmets are uncomfortable for me, I SUFFOCATE!!! I lack air in them! Modular helmets help, but they are too heavy and put too much pressure on my cheeks. In certain helmets, if I open my mouth, I can hardly close it without biting the inside of my cheeks! With a standard modular helmet, I often end up riding with the ‘flip’ up, which looks weird and ridiculous.
In an ideal world, and for the best possible protection, of course, a full-face helmet is necessary.
But if it’s not for racing, in realistic use, the open-face 3/4 helmet with two visors is the best compromise between protection and comfort.
For me, it’s the Shoei J Cruise II!

I dig the look and feel of the open face but I have this deeply ingrained phobia of eating asphalt . Did have the Biltwell Gringo but it had that oversized profile (bobble head look) you were talking about ATM I've got RXT very similar retro look to the gringo with a slightly smaller profile. Still searching for the perfect retro look with lower profile.

I find I’m unable to wear anything but half helmets. Both of those type helmets pull my hearing aids out when I put them on; even if I try a helmet much larger than I would usually wear. Not only am I now without the hearing aids, but they go on the ground and risk getting stepped on. If by chance they stay in, then taking the helmet off yanks them out. Since they go in my ears like molded ear plugs, I’m sure the helmets would pull earplugs out too.
I would love to use those type helmets - do you have any ideas or suggestions?

One omission in this video. That's 3/4 face helmets. 3/4 face helmets offer the best of both worlds, offering the perfect compromise between an open face and full face helmets. My current helmet is a Shoie J-Cruise. The clear shield blocks 99% of UV rays and also has an internal flip down sun visor, which is great when riding into the sun. I flip the visor up for that open face riding experience or down to minimize wind and noise. Either way, I don't have that closed in feeling of a full face helmet. The helmet is the most comfortable I've owned. I can wear it all day, no problem.

@@OldNotDead-Club they are heavy....its convienent to flip up and down in stop n go traffic.
Slow speeds you can utilize as 3/4 face. Out on the Highway full face. As i said i have a naked bike (no fairing/wind shield). 1/2 halmets tunnel wind noise into my ears. So for me it was either full face or no helmet. 3/4 just arent austetically pleasing.

I wear both on the iron 883 but 80% full face mostly because I wear glasses and I have a shark 🦈 helmet that has grooved space for the glasses arms to fit in and my glasses don’t fog up as well. My open face jet fighter pilots helmet has a prescription seat of glasses built in to the transition shades but it stupid expensive I only wear in the super hot weather.

34% of impacts are on the chin. It's literally the most important part of a helmet, although I use both, I always keep that in mind.
