Probably need to run this next change for 5 to 10 hours and drop it again and replace with fresh oil.
Good point...and let it sit for several days before I change it...95 % of the milk is out...and to be honest if you're not running the machine too hard it will be fine....but you are right for sure....get it out!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer yep, and that new fluid will be able to absorb what milky fluid was left. Many guys will use that $20 a bucket fluid from TSC for flush fluid.
could you run an oil cleaner / flush fluid thru it, like an engine oil flush ?
@@Shane_O.5158 no need too. Anything bin that old oil won't do anything more.
What your tying to clean out is just the residual fluid that sticks to the gears, sides of the sump and what doesn't come out of the pump and lines to the front of the tractor. Like we were saying the left over amount in this tractor is negligible in the 8 gallons it holds. Hydraulic fluid can soak it up and dilute it fine. This one was really not that bad. They can be way worse. But I'm picky about my stuff I would flush it probably if it was me with clean fluid then replace

My hydraulic fluid is alway like that! thought it was weird but normal! I’m so glad I came across this old vid. Just ordered new boots and plan to replace the fluid!
also...hang a bucket over your shifters...that helps too!
FYI:: Keyway is the groove, the key is the piece you can remove. The rounded style key is a woodruff key.

Probably should support that exhaust pipe below the cherry bomb before it breaks again.

Just FYI, those half-moon keys are known as Woodruff Keys.

On some tractors the fill plug has a gasket o ring. These can also leak water in. Replace those too👍

Years ago on the farm I had old M.F.65 diesel.
When you change your hydraulic oil you should also change the filter. And I know your tractor is gas but regardless the units are the same; only the engines are different. You pull the PTO shifter cover assembly and down in the belly there is a filter that is accessible thru the PTO shifter hole.

I have replaced the ones on my 1957 TO35 Ferguson,
I have also replaced the steering wheel on my tractor, I had a much harder time getting the old steering wheel off,
I insured the steering wheel spindle was coated with anti-seize when I installed the new steering wheel in case I ever had to remove it again,

Yeah anytime that fluid or oil is milky it’s got moisture or water in it. In fact now that you’ve changed it and replaced those boots. I would run it a few hours and change it again. That will be a nice tractor when you get done. I’ve run several of those. Good video Josh. 👍👍👍❤️

Oil looks like milk, when it gets contaminated with moisture/water
I had to use a cut off wheel to get the steering wheel off my 1958 massy 65 it was so rusted on
Another boot to change out is the one on the safety switch behind the steering column
Also the rubber boot on the draft sencing spring on lift top cover.
Greetings! Late to party. I got rid of some that looked just like that. I need a new steering wheel too, but will probably just limp along wearing gloves to steer. 😀

Josh, the keyway is where the key slides in. Think of a lock where the key goes in the cylinder. The cylinder is the keyway for the door key. The type of key that your tractor uses is called a woodruff key.
One thing I learned about 18 years ago is a product called Seafoam. They make a product for the GAS/Diesel, Transmission and Hydraulics. For the Transmission/Hydraulics you pour it in and run it for 15 minutes. I like to run it for 30-60 minutes. What it does is it makes a barrier between the metal and your fluids. Then you can drain all the oil out and put in fresh. Works great.
Good advice to keep your tractors inside out of the weather elements. ..Something that hardly anyone talks about is the bees making a nest inside your tractor normally the inside of hood area and most of the time in the steering box area....If you spend the time checking your oil battery connection filling with gas, check tires and kick them , grease your fittings in this time spent around your tractor you just might see the bees flying in and out of your tractor hood area warning you you have a problem... I drove around all summer long and never knew why I got stung by a bee from time to time I would see bees flying around me but never thought They were from the tractor LOL One day but at the end of the year I was changing some equipment and sitting there with the tractor running and me in the seat the fumes upset the bees under the steering column and between my legs turned black with bees....I had to stand up putting my whole body in the swarm of bees. To my shock I jumped to the ground and never got a single sting ..I found a big massive nest around the steering box

My old tractor is a 414. IH. And the water gets in around the bolts on the top casing on the transmission
Oof, we bought a used MF 5150, had milky-colored oil in its engine, cracked engineblock, cooler-fluid had mixed with the engine oil. Tractor was scrapped... Thankfully we lost no money.

skid loader has milky hydraulic look up mechanic in a bottle made by B3c. Dont throw the milk out yet, the stuff takes a bit to start working . But yes replace the boot.

It is likely there is a vent somewhere on the tractor that will allow air in and out. That will also contribute to oil contamination. Your video speaks volumes about regular maintenance.

You will also will get water through the rear top link boot. It probably needs changed too.

I believe you are supposed to pack the shifter lever with grease and then put the rubber cover on, just putting all the grease on the inside of the rubber cover doesn’t do much. Same with CV gaiters on vehicles

I’ve not seen a woodruff key before, interesting. I guess it’s used where it’s possible to pull the pulley/wheel off, where a normal key would just slide out
I'd put a zip tie or a hose clamp on top of that gearshift boot as an extra measure.

So many old tractors died because of lack of maintenance. Many people thought that hyd oil is a permanent fluid. They make a flushing oil to run through air. Probably should have run some diesel fuel in the engine to flush the sludge out. Was there a filter to change in the hydraulic system
It’s got water in it. Flush with diesel then refill with new oil.

White colored oil is water in oil. Simple. Without question.

Great video on chan ging that steering wheel. That can be a very frustrating job and many people will destroy the wheel getting it off even when they plan on reusing the steering wheel. Just one negative comment, and it's on your nomenclature. The thing you're calling a "keyway" is actually a Woodruff key. The keyway is actually the groove the key is placed in. The keyway holds the key, be it a square key, tapered key or Woodruff key.
Having an old 1962 Massey I very much appreciate you keeping Earl in shape and taking good care of him.

Yeh, grease goes on the lever, not the gaiter. That’s only there to keep the grease dry and dust free. But he’s doing this for TH-cam, it’s impossible to be perfect on everything 😬
I have an old massey ferguson tractor.... doesn't it use hydrolic fluid? I was told to put regular motor or in it instead of hydrolic oil
check your owners manual.....you can find a manual online nowadays that will tell ya...or hit up NAPA...they know!
Do you keep it stored under cover? If so, wonder how water got in there.
Good thing you were able to catch it before damage occurred, maintenance and daily checks are pretty easy to get looked past on older equipment especially if it dosent get used often. Can never have too many tractors around!
Did the pump come with the battery or do you have to purchase it separately?
That tractor ever been in a flood? That much water usually comes from being submerged in water, like flood damage at one time.

Water condensation will cause oil to become milky. Doesn't take much. Eight gallons? Not 8 quarts?
8 gallons is about right.
My old Ford takes 5.5 gallons.

What type of gear oil did you put in there? I hear those old MF need a pretty heavy weight mineral oil that won't attack the bronze parts inside the pump assembly.
Pretty much every Lube Guide I looked up for this tractor suggested 80W-90.
Does anyone have links to where a trustworthy source for buying more fluid, and the type? I've heard mineral oil, I've heard GL1 - 90W, I've heard a lot of things. Help?
