I’m curious about your thoughts of having a professor from a different department write a letter of recommendation for graduate school. For instance, I’m applying to PhD programs for Pol Sci, I have two strong relationships within my undergraduate department, but I also have a good relationship with an English department professor that I took a research class with. Would this be a recommendation letter that isn’t as strong as a third one from my own department of study?
This is totally fine!! I actually did it too. If you've got three to work with, two should definitely be within your department/discipline, but that third can act more as a character eval. I had my FAV professor in the philosophy department recommend me for everything I did for nearly 5 years. He was a breeze to work with, so punctual, and wrote great letters that he was totally open with having me tweak! I say go for it! Get the best letters you can get and if one comes outside the department, no worries! Hope this helps :)
