I run geekbench on my I7-9700F with 16gb ram it's multicore score was only 6498 and single core was 1615. So in my use case of daily driver would it be a bad purchase to get a trash can model?
I have one of these that I just use for 'office' work and its fine. I wouldn't bother with upgrades, just get a new mac mini which will be a superior machine.
typing on my 2013 mac pro that i got for $160 on ebay, upgrading from 16gb to 64gb and ill be all in, about $200. still super usable but I will be upgrading to the m4 mac mini soon
I have the 12 core 2015 Trash Can with 2tb ssd and 64gig ram - quite speedy with 4K video footage dual D700 Graphics and as been running for the last 2 yrs with No problems
Precision set probably not the right set to be using for those processor adjacent screws. Put a torx bit onto something a bit beefier. It’ll be easy to undo, less likely to cause damage to both the board and yourself. Doing it like this will give you blisters and hand ache.
Instead of using paper towels to clean the die surroundings, soak it in 95% IPA then use a soft toothbrush. Less risk of taking components out and also less risk of leaving small bits of paper in there which could mess with things.
A good shout too and something I also do situation depending, however I was out of IPA at this point and my electronics reserved tooth brush was last used to clean the intake manifold of a 1.9 TDI :p
@@WillThePlank The go-to for cleaning old paste from heatsinks and CPUs is 99% IPA with lint-free paper; typically from coffee filters. They are sturdier and have enough gentle abrasion to clean the die effectively without scratching. Any residue bits from normal tissue will prevent a good thermal contact between CPU and heatsink.
Probably well enough. But expect at least some quirks. I ran Ubuntu on a iMac 2017 and had no issues beside sound needing to be patched every update. Then again, such issues can occur even with older unsupported units for Mac OS. Same 2017 system with Sequoia get graphic glitches when coming back from rest state.
By pressing ctrl and scrolling up and down with the middle mouse button, may need to enable it under accessibility options first for it to work however.
2697 14 core or 16 core 2698 v3’s run 3.6ghz max single core and have 35-40MB L3 cache which makes up for low base clocks. All have similar power consumption whether 6 core or 22 core variants and none run hot with the smallest of heat sinks.
I have transfered the ssd heatsink on mine and it's perfectly fine... there's just a huge strip of thermal pad under there... I would assume it helps somewhat as the SSD gets pretty hot.
Does it only take Xeon chips? No i5/i7?, its deffinately an interesting design, does look like a trash can except its not hollow in the middle to throw trash away. theres probably a specific torque setting for the cpu mount. Thermal paste the rule ive learnt is theres no such thing as too much paste but not enough is bad, that said with lots you run the risk of mess and paste going everywhere, With pre set retention mechanisms it should not be possible to crack cpu or gpu dies, its more with aftermarket or direct mount no screw bottoming out mounting that can happen, cheap aio's, cheap heatsinks, Phase Change cooling or LN2 Pot Cooling.
Just watching you struggle removing the CPU retention bracket screws which are under alot of tension, using a bigger / longer driver rather than the short iFixit one would help immensely in applying more torque with less effort :-) I used to use a snap-on screwdriver (which is similar to LTT's screwdriver) when I used to work on certain Mac products like the Mac Pro. A soft tooth brush and IPA is the best way of cleaning thermal compound off the components around the CPU/GPU dies. I'm wondering if your spray cleaner your using is water based? If that is the case, just be careful with that it ensure it drys-off thoroughly :-)
Unfortunately open ore patcher will only work until Apple stops support for Intel CPUs. Once that's done, most Intel Mac's will have to run Linux or Windows.
The Intel Mac Pro was sold until last year and Apple tends to give at least five years before dropping support for something, so as long as macOS doesn't deviate too far from what the other Intel Macs support in terms of latest drivers and processors, we should be good for a couple of years at least. But, yes. Older hardware like the Trashcan might struggle after Sequoia regardless.
@@Technocrat. Win 11 doesn't work fine on any computer, to be honest. People are already hankering back to Windows 10, the last good Windows. Either way, if you have a lot of bought Mac software, it is not going to run under any form of Windows so...
nicely done mate wish i hjad the cash cause would love one of these be great for lightroom machine lol nice form factor on these for the oomf and beutifully made inside impressive stuff dont see why u dont keep it audio stuff on mac is excellent seeing as ur a music guy
The Mac Pro 6,1 was a failure only in the fact that it was limited with it's expansion options. Apple made a bet on the industry embracing multiple graphic card technology and that didn't happen. Hardware wise they were bullet proof and reliable with the exception of a bad batch of D700 graphics cards. Third party fan control software cures any heating problems with high intensity use if the heat sync compound is in good shape. It may not compete with the latest Macs but it is still very usable for the average user today. Compare that to other 2013 era computers. The computer may have been a flop with high end users but it is still a powerful well designed computer for every day tasks.
I would say it was "built to a cost", which is not what you expect from a pro machine. The clearly wanted a small machine to cut down on shipping costs and increase profits.
biggest problem is its gpu, useless junk by amd and no way to upgrade it, even d700 as its crossfire 2x gpus, no stable drivers under windows ,very slow in single mode as most games will never support it
Always Wanted one of these, They Look Sweet; I Just cant jsutify the $$$ because it Looks Cool Add that tot he List of Stuff I'll Never Get... Like the G4 CUBE LOL Im Not even an Apple Fanboy
Wonder if it would be possible to transplant the M4 Pro Mac Mini into the Mac Pro TrashCan case?

I own a Mac Pro 2013. It's great and still useable for daily use. But I agree. The new Mac Mini M4 is the way to go.
Great, many thanks. Tcase for the E5-2667 v2 is 74c, so the fan curve could definitely use some improvement :)

Totally agree with you there, I think a larger ratcheting screwdriver would be an ideal tool for that and would be what I would use in the future.
Loved watching this dude, I'm new to your channel too.. Hope to see more soon, awesome project you know!
So tempted , but no , no , no ,no !
Maybe .

Use a good kitchen towel, never had an issue, plus there's less plastic waste.

I really like the look of these systems, as you said "A interesting Art Piece"
Nice upgrades and hope you get your money back for it :)
If I recall right with an adapter you can use m.2 pcie nvme ssds.
Mate, if the temperatures are OK, then the amount of thermal paste is OK. Simple as that.
I had an issue with the standoff on the CPU board - I did the same as you, leaving it on but what a PITA I thought it would be to take it off.
How well does Linux run on it? Xubuntu with XFCE?

the 10 core is the best all arounder . good single core and multi core and good temp
yes that's what I put in mine, use it all day everyday running Protools doing TV post production
How did you zoom in all the time? I like that.

Sometimes what you need is a mountain biking toolkit, not a computer toolkit.
It's an ash tray not a trash can.

It would be great if Moore thunderbolt two devices were in the wild. More cheap thunderbolt two devices I should say.
i just got rid of my older macs. was running linux, gave up and bought a mac mini last year....now that m4 mini is calling me
it's insane how much one of these still costs.
The Apple Tax. 🙂 It's why I don't like apple kit, it's overpriced for what it is.
I bought a 6 core with 8gb memory
I upgraded to a 12 core 64 memory 1TB
Runs at 48’ while music production 56’

Best to use cordless screwdriver
Trash Can Mac, aka THE most overpriced Ivy Bridge system on the used PC market
