I'm not a Tory voter but iv always respected Roy Stewart. I may disagree with allot of his policies but he has integrity. When Boris became the favourite for the leadership he was one of the first tories who warned us about him said that he will not serve in his cabinet, and he kept his word.

Rory Stewart was the only sensible Conservative MP that I have seen in years, given his amazing background and achievements I am astounded that the Conservative Party never saw him as an icon to be built upon; it just shows the Conservative Party is broken as is British politics.
Tories purged all the level headed conservatives in the last election. Ken Clarke who I personally like even if I don't entirely agree with him, Philip Hammond, Dominic Grieve, Rory Stewart, Sir Nicholas Soames (Churchill's grandson for Christ's sake). I may not have agreed with them but they were not ideologues. They were decent people with convictions and beliefs which differed from my own but who I respected. They were the people with whom you could have a sensible conversation. They were the ones who had a backbone and didn't want to be associated with Boris. All of those who now parade like they found morals and oppose Boris (now that they realized that he would cause them to lose their seats) are pathetic.
It isn´t his party. We´ve had invasive liberals like him in it for far too long and now liberal Boris is now gone we can finally get back to conservative politics.

I'm not a tory, but I would love to see Rory Stewart become an MP again, and in my dreams, become the leader of that party. I do feel he has integrity and intelligence, something that has been completely lacking from the tory cabinet for some time.

I can’t say I agree with Rory Stewart on everything, but at least he can have a decent conversation that doesn’t devolve into trashing the opposition, and he generally doesn’t seem like a bad person overall. I worked at HMP Ranby when I first heard of Rory Jones when he was prisons minister. I enjoyed his series on Afghanistan and is a decent and honest man. Why he's a Tory I don't know. They treated his very badly.
This is about Johnson's ego. By hanging on, he avoids the label of 'shortest serving PM ever'. At the moment, Theresa May holds that, er, honour. Incredible. It's not about the country but his 'overweaning ambition.
My concern is that he knows how Thatcher's 2nd term was saved. With a war going on in a part of Europe, I would not be in the slightest surprised to see him ramp up UK involvement. He really needs to either be thrown out now or, kept on such a short leash that he might have well been thrown out. All his emails, texts and phone calls should be closely scrutinised, daily. If he is to remain, it should be Prime Minister in name only, the selection of the new cabinet should be taken out of his hands.

It was apparent from the first wave of Covid that Boris Johnson was a horrific human being. His joke about Operation Last Gasp as 1000's of people were choking to death in agony, fear and isolation from their loved ones. And even after seeing the destruction caused first time around, he said "let the bodies pile high" as the second wave raged. He doesn't have an ounce of decency in his body nor a shred of empathy. The warning signs were there - having an affair and leaving his wife while she was battling cancer - but I honestly never imagined he would be capable of such callousness and evil on a mass scale.
He's a profoundly selfish and lazy person. he doesn't care about anyone other than himself. Frankly, I am not at all surprised by his behaviour; those that are haven't be paying attention.
I remember an old boss who was sacking an employee, and he made sure the sacked person left the premises within 5 minutes, even though he was paid until the end of the following month. The boss's reason was that sacked employees could not do any more damage to the company, could not speak on behalf of the company in any way, but were still OK financially as if they had worked their notice. When I ran my own business, I stuck to that method and it saved me a lot of heartache. To that end, Boris Johnson must leave the premises today and wait at home for his termination payout.

i am disabled from a brain heammorrage i suffered when i was 25 and only had my wife and 1 year old son at that time , the conservative gov would not let my wife threw i had to go to court to justify that this was a legit marriage at 21 it took me 3 years fighting against them and finally got a result in court , then a year later collapsed with a brain heammorrage , i woke up 5 weeks later out of a coma , had my pulse cut out , neck glued back in place , radiotherapy to the brain after having a special clamp made for me that clamps your jaw in place , so many ops its unbelievable , then when i was 29 i collapsed again and woke up in hospital and was told i was diabetic type 1 so have to take 4 injections a day with blood each time to test , where is the peace in this world now 50 with no right side of my complete body , lye here on the bed staring out of the window , the tories should be ashamed of themselves , look at me no money no sorrow , live life by the sec and not minute , look forward and never look backwards , always be happy with no regrets . peace .....🙂

They could just make up a new rule about the conditions required for them to conduct a vote of no confidence in a caretaker leader, and who would take over if that vote succeeds.
Too much of the political system is based on tradition and convention rather than actual statute or hard rules. It just wasn't expected when these things were created that someone so blatantly corrupt and morally repugnant would hold the highest office in the land. The same is true for the US and how Trump just ignored such things to get away with things over and over again. These things need to be written in to law.

Sadiq Khan had big support (including myself) and Stewart could get no traction. He realised that the Mayorship was not to be, for him, and just quietly accepted that, with dignity. @@stanleybeckett7705 Well Wilson’s first spell should count. He became leader of the Labour Party in opposition, so became PM at the election in 1964 when he defeated Douglas-Home. He won again at his snap election in 1966 against Ted Heath, but then lost to Heath in 1970. So he came both in and out of office at general elections. (His second term he came in by defeating Heath again in 1974 - why Heath qualifies in this game - but of course he then left office by resigning, so his second term doesn’t meet the criteria.) Before Wilson 1, I agree, you have to go back to Attlee. It does sound strange to think about, but it’s a feature of Westminster-style Parliamentary systems, and is caused by the fact that the system encourages MPs from the ruling party to put their new leader in place before an election so he can fight it as an incumbent, once they feel the public won’t support the incumbent again. Pretty common in Canada for example: Stephen Harper came in and out by a general election (2006-2015), but you have to go back a long way before him - Joe Clark who headed up a minority government / hung Parliament which lasted less than 10 months in 79-80, and then before him you go back to Diefenbaker 57-63.

Rory Stewart was the only sensible Conservative MP that I have seen in years, given his amazing background and achievements I am astounded that the Conservative Party never saw him as an icon to be built upon; it just shows the Conservative Party is broken as is British politics.
Tories purged all the level headed conservatives in the last election. Ken Clarke who I personally like even if I don't entirely agree with him, Philip Hammond, Dominic Grieve, Rory Stewart, Sir Nicholas Soames (Churchill's grandson for Christ's sake). I may not have agreed with them but they were not ideologues. They were decent people with convictions and beliefs which differed from my own but who I respected. They were the people with whom you could have a sensible conversation. They were the ones who had a backbone and didn't want to be associated with Boris. All of those who now parade like they found morals and oppose Boris (now that they realized that he would cause them to lose their seats) are pathetic.

Yes and for me integrity is an important quality. The issue we have now is that Boris will be replaced by another morally reprehensible individual who has stood up and defended his lies for the last 3 years. Rory Stewart is very straight forward, honest, and with huge integrity. His insight and opinions are always spot on and with intelligence.
He's also eloquent and doesn't speak in soundbites. I'm not a Tory voter but if he could have been leader before Brexit the UK have been a far better place.

My concern is that he knows how Thatcher's 2nd term was saved. With a war going on in a part of Europe, I would not be in the slightest surprised to see him ramp up UK involvement. He really needs to either be thrown out now or, kept on such a short leash that he might have well been thrown out. All his emails, texts and phone calls should be closely scrutinised, daily. If he is to remain, it should be Prime Minister in name only, the selection of the new cabinet should be taken out of his hands.

It was apparent from the first wave of Covid that Boris Johnson was a horrific human being. His joke about Operation Last Gasp as 1000's of people were choking to death in agony, fear and isolation from their loved ones. And even after seeing the destruction caused first time around, he said "let the bodies pile high" as the second wave raged. He doesn't have an ounce of decency in his body nor a shred of empathy. The warning signs were there - having an affair and leaving his wife while she was battling cancer - but I honestly never imagined he would be capable of such callousness and evil on a mass scale.

I remember an old boss who was sacking an employee, and he made sure the sacked person left the premises within 5 minutes, even though he was paid until the end of the following month.
The boss's reason was that sacked employees could not do any more damage to the company, could not speak on behalf of the company in any way, but were still OK financially as if they had worked their notice. When I ran my own business, I stuck to that method and it saved me a lot of heartache.
To that end, Boris Johnson must leave the premises today and wait at home for his termination payout.

i am disabled from a brain heammorrage i suffered when i was 25 and only had my wife and 1 year old son at that time , the conservative gov would not let my wife threw i had to go to court to justify that this was a legit marriage at 21 it took me 3 years fighting against them and finally got a result in court , then a year later collapsed with a brain heammorrage , i woke up 5 weeks later out of a coma , had my pulse cut out , neck glued back in place , radiotherapy to the brain after having a special clamp made for me that clamps your jaw in place , so many ops its unbelievable , then when i was 29 i collapsed again and woke up in hospital and was told i was diabetic type 1 so have to take 4 injections a day with blood each time to test , where is the peace in this world now 50 with no right side of my complete body , lye here on the bed staring out of the window , the tories should be ashamed of themselves , look at me no money no sorrow , live life by the sec and not minute , look forward and never look backwards , always be happy with no regrets . peace .....🙂

Surely the 1922 committee doesn't become powerless just because Johnson has agreed to eventually resign as prime minister once the party has selected the new, permanent leader. They could just make up a new rule about the conditions required for them to conduct a vote of no confidence in a caretaker leader, and who would take over if that vote succeeds.
That is what is wrong with British politics. Imagine having a 1922 committee in the 21st century. It is like having a King and Queen, oops!
Too much of the political system is based on tradition and convention rather than actual statute or hard rules. It just wasn't expected when these things were created that someone so blatantly corrupt and morally repugnant would hold the highest office in the land. The same is true for the US and how Trump just ignored such things to get away with things over and over again. These things need to be written in to law.

Right now, Boris should NOT hold the office of Prime Minister, there should have been a plan of succession already in place by tradition and law similar to how it works in the US.

Rory Stewart seems a calm, sensible, decent sort of chap. Amazing for a Tory! I was sorry when he withdrew from his Mayor of London campaign. Sadiq Khan had big support (including myself) and Stewart could get no traction. He realised that the Mayorship was not to be, for him, and just quietly accepted that, with dignity. Can you imagine how Johnson would have behaved in that situation?

Edward Heath 1970 - 1974 was the last PM to be voted in and out of office. Everyone since either became PM through resignation or resigned (Boris Johnson did both).

@@stanleybeckett7705 Well Wilson’s first spell should count. He became leader of the Labour Party in opposition, so became PM at the election in 1964 when he defeated Douglas-Home. He won again at his snap election in 1966 against Ted Heath, but then lost to Heath in 1970. So he came both in and out of office at general elections. (His second term he came in by defeating Heath again in 1974 - why Heath qualifies in this game - but of course he then left office by resigning, so his second term doesn’t meet the criteria.) Before Wilson 1, I agree, you have to go back to Attlee.
It does sound strange to think about, but it’s a feature of Westminster-style Parliamentary systems, and is caused by the fact that the system encourages MPs from the ruling party to put their new leader in place before an election so he can fight it as an incumbent, once they feel the public won’t support the incumbent again. Pretty common in Canada for example: Stephen Harper came in and out by a general election (2006-2015), but you have to go back a long way before him - Joe Clark who headed up a minority government / hung Parliament which lasted less than 10 months in 79-80, and then before him you go back to Diefenbaker 57-63.
As soon as Johnson became PM the clock was ticking till we reached this point.
