  • It's about time for these girls to start earning their keep. The chicks are now 16 weeks old and I'm hoping they'll start laying eggs soon.

I'm surprised how much I enjoy these videos. I'm a big fan of the main channel and came over just to see what was going on. Johnny, you could make paint drying interesting 😁

Looks good Johnny, as for the roosters, I wouldn't get more than 4. They are a royal pain in the backside. The bardrocks might be blaming the others for their missing sister.

I don’t know if someone’s mentioned it, but, if you walk up to them and bend down as if you pet them, and they squat instead of running away, that’s a sign they’re getting ready to lay. Also, definitely put a roof on the run so they can go out in winter- they won’t walk on snow. You’ll regret NOT roofing it when the snow comes.

It took 8 months for our wayndottes to lay. Bought them in February and they just started laying two weeks ago.

My chickens started laying when they squat when you approach them. 18 -20 weeks

Them squabbling like that may just be trying to establish a hierarchy. I have more hens acting like that than roosters.
Mine are sneaky too. They lay anywhere they want unfortunately. I've found stockpiles of a dozen or two some times in places they've snuck off to.

Do you plan to compost or throw out table scraps for them? That run would be a suite area to dump it. Yard waste/leaves will attract worms in a compost pile they can peck through.
I have wanted chickens and a compost pile ever since I saw this video about it : watch?v=IWChH9MHkHg

If one of the chickens that was killed by the dog was the Alpha, then they might be establishing a NEW Pecking Order. And they may not lay eggs for another week or so do to the stress of the attack. But I hope they are all doing well

I noticed a kubota box blade on the trailer. Did you pick up a tractor?

I don't know where in KY you are located, but I am in Union county east Tennessee. You are welcome to borrow my post hole auger you can stick on the back of your tractor or I have a gas power one as well that you can have with different size augers. That will get those holes in their place in minutes. If you start farting around with that post hole spade thing you have, that would cut seriously into your reloading video time, so I rather give you that gas powered auger as a gift if you want to pick it up.

Wow, that is an extremely generous offer. I sincerely appreciate it! I am way up on the Ohio River, so it would be a 10 or 11 hour round trip. Probably not practical when you add up the gas cost. I've got a pretty big rental place near me and I'm sure a post hole digger rental isn't too pricey. That's been my plan for when I get into doing some serious fence work.
Thank you for the generous offer!
