Composting using chickens and using the deep litter composting method you can pasively create a large amount of chicken compost. Rotary soil sieve
    The organic matter mixed with chicken manure creates a nutritious mix to create fertile soil. Unlike in the US it is illegal to feed kitchen scraps to chickens in the UK #Permaculture #compost

      @@mndi89 it's good if you can keep a rooster but if you can't it doesn't cause any issues in terms eggs. I just have hens I used to have a rooster but my neighbours complained to the council.

      G’day mate just found your channel. I recently got 12 chooks I live in suburbia but am starting my urban farm. Just wondering mate, why on earth can you not feed your kitchen scraps to the chooks in the UK.? This seems absurd to me.

      It came about after the 2001 Foot and Mouth outbreak in the UK and Europe. The EU then clamped down on it. Whether that's changed or will change now we're no longer part of the EU I don't know, but it seems that the UK had changed very little of what came about due to draconian EU rules/laws so I won't hold my breath!

    I'm an avid composter with a large garden & I came across this vid a few months back & gave it a go. I'm a total convert to this method, it works a treat. I have several "open cast compostings" going on around my veg plot some I've used already with success. I use a lot of wood chippings from cuttings, cardboard, weeds, grass etc & leave it a day or so to burn off any seeds & turn it when the mood takes. I'd highly recommend your method for any size of garden.

    Great lesson on composting. We are in the US in a rural area with free range chickens. We often put grass clippings into their pen, but they are only in there a short while in early morning as we let them out to roam around during the day. My poor husband has been trying to make compost by putting it in a pile and turning it himself. I'm going to send him the link to this so he can see how to let the chickens do a good bit of the work.

    • @MyFamilyGarden
      @MyFamilyGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We have a lot of foxes so the chickens are only allowed out when we're out. I do have the conventional compost pile but that's to handle the overflow, one of my jobs this year is to redesign the system to make it easier to work

    • @kcpaull
      @kcpaull 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MyFamilyGarden Luckily, the foxes never bother the chickens here as there are plenty of wildlife, however, coyotes can be a problem. We had to put a top on the run to keep them and the raccoons out.

    Just one thing i too have chickens we run 12 layers and just like you i collect their poo and composted waste. BUT.... just bear in mind that chicken poo is VERY HIGH in nitrogen with not a lot potash and phosphates.. so as an all round fertilizer you will need some p.and k.
    Great advice great video.. 👍👍👍

      thanks so much, i use a few composting techniques so i get a good balance of macro and micro nutirents. The good thing about this method is the woody material which is being composted contains most of the nutrients needed especially once brokedn down. I make a lot of my own bone meal which helps add phosphorus and potassium th-cam.com/video/Kf1CLrf2vvU/w-d-xo.html

    Good morning Mothin. I have made the move and am in the process of setting things up right now. It will be a while before I get that type of results. What is the reasoning for not giving kitchen scraps to the chickens? Shredded paper for the coop bedding. I like that. Thanks. Stay safe. Best wishes Bob.

    • @MyFamilyGarden
      @MyFamilyGarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Bob, congratulations. I want to rebuild the coop it's starting to fall apart. The British authorities think that there is a risk of meat contaminating the chicken food so could cause disease...

  • @LizzybellLeather

    Hello, I love this video as it encouraged me to do something similar to you. I too have been using my chickens to make compost in their run for the past few months. I have a compost heap made of pallets with a little gap that they can get in and out of; they end up spreading it all over their run floor so I'm not really sure that there is any point to having that in there. However, I have been adding their poop from the coop into it (rhymes!), but I am wondering if this is a good idea? Because, if they have any parasites in their poop if I were to worm them surely I am reintroducing the parasite? I got our chickens in Spring so I haven't as yet wormed them. Their run is big enough for me to keep the compost heap in without giving them access to it, so maybe I should give them all the garden waste to break up and later add that into the compost heap with their poo, and permanently block off their access to it? I'd really appreciate your thoughts. I love the plans you have for your new run and can't wait to see the results. As you asked for comments I would say access to the eggs from outside of the coop is essential for us, because my youngest son feels happier getting the eggs that way, otherwise your new run sounds similar to our set up. Thanks for creating this channel, it's inspiring, Liz.

    • @MyFamilyGarden
      @MyFamilyGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Liz,
      I have a few composting systems set up to do different things. I don't like the idea of leaving the chicken poo in the run so i remove all the bedding weekly and compost it seperately with my kitchen waste in my worm bin. There is a risk of disease and parasites, the woodchip in my run is over 1ft deep but i wouldnt be comfortale leaveing there mixed with poo for a year or so like some people do. There's a lot to type so i'll try and cover some of this when i do the video when the new set up is complete

      @@MyFamilyGarden Ahh thank you I think I agree with you. Luckily I can adapt my composting system so I think I'll get on that. I'm really looking forward to seeing your latest videos, thank you so much for creating this channel, there aren't that many people I can ask these questions too!

    just found this channel and love these videos! I'm in London and wonder how you deal with foxes with the chickens? They're everywhere here and I have considered (when I get chickens) putting them on the flat roof of my house when it's re-done as a living roof with a wild flower meadow up there. I have so many foxes around that the poor chickens would have to live in something like Fort Knox otherwise.

    • @MyFamilyGarden
      @MyFamilyGarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the last 10 years i've lost 5 chickens to foxes and that was mostly when they were free ranging during the winter time. It's very possible to keep the pen secure. I'm planning on re duilding that run because it's fallen into disrepair. I like your idea of the roof chickens
