My favorite part of Mouthwashing is how there is no otherworldly, paranormal threat. Every dangerous point presented on the ship is directly from another human being.
charlie’s media literacy really shows in this playthrough, saw a bunch of playthroughs that were just “well i don’t really know what happened but good game!” so this in contrast was a very satisfying watch
Yeah, that's why I like to watch his playthroughs first before I watch other people. It feels like he respects the games he plays more than the average TH-camr, but maybe that's just me.
Polle being the image that Jimmy actually faces instead of Anya herself is probably even more messed up considering the little heehee haha he tried to pull during his psch eval
God that's so right, that whole last segment was making him face the things he did to Daisuke and Swansea but hes so fucking far removed himself from Anya that she doesn't even appear
@@PragmaticProsecutorhe also says literally nothing when he sees her corpse. Like you don’t even have an OPTION to interact with it that’s how little Jimmy cares
@@GobaGNon yeah, especially considering he can interact with the vent in that exact scene and says "I can't stand to look at his blood anymore.". Anya was dead right next to him and he didn't even take a glance
A few things I noticed that made me love this game even more: - Daisuke stands next to curly while he makes the cake so he knows the sweetener code which is how he was able to get the packets - There are hints that Jimmy was a criminal back on earth The infant crying Charlie hears in the beginning could be a reference to Anya’s unborn child - During the blood lake hallucinations with all the ladders and emergency signs, this was most likely curly remembering the crash in his injured state, that’s what the bright light was - Anya doesn’t show up in Jimmy’s hallucinations but polle does and Anya has the same text color as her - even though we mostly only see Swansea be mean to daisuke you can assume he’s pretty good to the kid outside of what we’re shown based on how Daisuke looks up to him - curly is a pretty passive character, he actually had the power to stop Jimmy before he became a problem, he could’ve protected Anya after she told him about what Jimmy was. Being passive doesn’t mean you’re not culpable. - Jimmy believes that his one good act, saving curly, is enough to make up for his past transgressions. He’s still trying to be the hero and he gets to die in the most undeservedly merciful way out of all of them. Worst of all, he honestly believes he was in the right.
Also with that Polle/Anya situation thing, Anya mentions how Jimmy was getting sexual dreams about horses like Polle which also translates to his SA and lust toward Anya. Both Jimmy and Curly only act as the hero for Anya when it is simple, Curly interviews Jimmy when Anya is uncomfortable but as you said is passive. Jimmy will only give Curly meds after Anya is physically weak by it and acts like it’s the biggest sacrifice in the world.
adding to the blood lake hallucination thing, i heard someone say that the warning signs showing up were metaphorical for curly’s guilt over not seeing/ignoring jimmy’s warning signs. alongside that, that hallucination happens right before they have the whole curly being at the top of the ladder talk, and here he sees broken ladders, which likely is in reference to how he’s at the top but is a part of a very broken company that doesn’t care about its employees and also how he’s at the top because he allows people like jimmy to work under him, which means that he himself brings in some level of that brokenness
1:56:56 The most infuriating part about Jimmys whole “apology” is that never once does her apologize to Anya, the one person he should be concerned about. But he never acknowledges her death (fully blocking it out at first), never gets flashbacks of guilt like he does the everyone else, and has Polle as a stand in for he because losing his job/reputation affected him more than what he did to Anya
I wonder how much of that was because they didn't want to show flashbacks of what happened? A big part of the story is that subtle reveal, and showing explicit flashbacks would've been pretty counter to the whole slow-burn vibe they've built up.
@@DerekS-kq3zh I don't know if that factors in much? We don't see Daisuke's actual injury, we don't see the impact of Swansea's death, and even the shit Jimmy does to Curly is all metaphorical body horror. I'm sure there would've been a subtle way to show Jimmy giving any thought to what he did to Anya, but it's pretty easy to tell that he never did.
@@DerekS-kq3zh he really just doesn’t care about Anya, the point is the only person he cares about is Curly. Anya locks herself in and his first thought is worry for Curly, not for her, in contrast to Daisuke who says “what if *she* runs out of something”. Jimmy manipulates Daisuke into going into the vent, he knows Swansea will be pissed and he knows the danger, but convinces Daisuke it’ll be fine and Swansea will be proud. All because he puts Curly’s safety above Daisuke’s. I’d say Jimmy not caring about Anya, or anyone for that matter other than Curly, is barely even subtext. If he was meant to care about her they would have shown it, but the dialogue and actions we see suggest the opposite.
@AnEmu404 I agree with that in part, but I don't even think he particularly cares about Curly. He tells himself that he does to maintain his image of himself as a hero, but people who care about someone don't treat them like that when they're hurt and vulnerable. Jimmy's actions in the cockpit show exactly how little he cares about everyone else on the Tulpar. He chose to doom them all rather than face even the possibility of having consequences for his actions.
I think Swansea’s speech to Jimmy might be my favorite piece of dialogue in any game I’ve ever seen. The sheer emotion, Swansea doing what Jimmy is physically incapable of doing by coming to terms with himself at the very end and accepting who he is and the mistakes he’s made, the sheer, utter contempt in that final “Fuck you”, made clear even without voice acting… god, it’s a fucking masterpiece
@@V1DE0-STARZ he's usually always been pretty eloquent and clever with words! he's genuinely a smart guy and has his own set of wisdom in a way, bleak as it may be. (9:58) "Then there's that teeny bopper thinkin' only with his downstairs longnose." (38:11) "You hear that? That's the sound of 15 years of sobriety poppin' like a cyst! A glorious, magnificent, red hot cyst!" (1:18:44) "You think it's all goin' somewhere, but every failure leaves you a little more mangled than before. Older, uglier, meaner. Smarter in a worse way." (1:26:13) "Useless ray of goddamned sunshine. Not an ace student, career workhorse, or force of ambition. Just a damn good kid trying his best. You could've taught an old fool like me a lot." in one of the Q&As, the devs apparently had a lot of fun developing his dialogue. he's such a wonderful and way too often overlooked character. im so glad his monologue scene exists and sticks with people but to look back on swansea and who he is as and was as a person, his lessons really dig deep in some ways. the dissatisfaction with pulling yourself together and being responsible, knowing you hurt yourself and others around you, being unable to save a kid that was like family, being away from his own family for all this time and knowing he was never gonna go home and thats why he broke a decade and a half of sobriety in an instant. he partied his days away when he could. he speaks with decades of experience and a lifetime of misery and deep seated unhappiness, up til the very end.
The realization of Anya being pregnant and asking why the sleeping quarters don't lock but medical does- and the fact she feels she needs to hide the gun to feel safe when people realize what happened- its so interesting seeing people go from "okay he's an asshole-" to "O. O oh god what- oh Jesus- " its so interesting seeing how different people react to the realization-
I felt really dumb cause when that happened my mind was on that weird scene of interrupting a convo with Anya and Swansea with the axe, I thought it was him not Jimbo 😭
It's one of my favorite, legitimate uses of shock value. You get so cozy in Jimmy's perspective, only for them to rip you out of it with the worst possible thing he could have done, given clearly, but not graphically. It manages to be shocking and disturbing, while putting your attention where it needs to go: on what Jimmy did, the warning signs, and how many people failed to stop it. It's a gripping tragedy.
One of my favorite things about Charlie playing this is that he actually understood a lot of the implications way before many other TH-camrs/streamers did. And that made this so much more enjoyable to watch.
@@neonii9325 Basically what the flashback scenes tell us is that: - Jimmy raped Anya - She got pregnant because of it but hid the pregnancy from everyone - When Curly told the crew that pony express was firing them she realized how bad her situation was - Anya told Curly what happened to her and hid the gun just in case Jimmy reacted badly to her pregnancy - She told Jimmy about the baby and he realized he wasn't gonna get away with what he'd done - He didn't want to Take Responsibility (wink wink) so he intentionally put the ship on course with a meteor to avoid dealing with any repercussions - Jimmy panicked after he realized what he'd done so when Curly was severely injured from the crash, he blamed him because Curly couldn't speak and expose him All the scenes after the crash are showing Jimmy's decent into madness and his extreme efforts to try and repress the fact that pretty much everything is his own fault
I love so fucking much how he got the implications of things and how he remembered minute details like Anya saying there aren't locks on the sleeping quarters
2 days after this was recorded, Charlie was found dead in his home. The autopsy revealed that the cause of death was flouride poisoning, a singular bottle of mouthwash was found at the death scene.
Fun fact: Yimpee is a close up drawing of Jimmy, one of the devs drew it but forgot drawing it so they didnt know who did it and left it ingame. In canon, Daisuke drew it and Anya found it funny so she left it up in the medical room. Though considering later events I doubt she'd like looking at a close up image of Jimmy by the time the game takes place.
1:36:34 You can see what it looks like outside of Jimmy's delusion. How he dragged everybody's dead corpses and sat them down one by one. This game is terrifying.
In case you don’t know: Chronophobia, also known as prison neurosis, is considered an anxiety disorder describing the fear of time and time moving forward, which is commonly seen in prison inmates.
I think the greatest part of Mouthwashing is that it’s a cautionary tale. There were so many clear moments where it didn’t have to go this wrong, where something should have been done, but every mechanism that should’ve been in place to stop this wasn’t. If there was a lock on the sleeping quarters, if Curly hadn’t taken his side and had stopped him, if Jimmy never was invited onboard- the story didn’t have to end this way Anyways Charlie should play Ace Attorney I think
I absolutely love how in character Charlie gets. He’s a goof and he makes silly jokes, but damn I FELT the delivery on some of these lines. Also, I love how he reads into everything. Not so much that there’s more theories than gameplay, but enough that you can see him figuring out the storyline and actually understanding the plot instead of just reading through the dialogue and being confused. Slimecicle is fucking awesome.
well he was in the dsmp and the qsmp and has done a lot of lore gameplay videos etc etc so it makes sense that "charlile sloomekick" is improving his humanness🤓
Mouthwashing works as a horror game because the horror isn't some cosmic all powerful monster, the horror is just a singular man wanting to avoid the consequences of his actions
Slime, you are legitimately the first person I've seen that dodged the horseworm baby's charge, once it sees you. (That scary move it does where you turn around and it pauses, then strikes.) You ducked into a different vent area and it kept going forward. I didn't even know that was possible.
i was initially gonna comment something funny like "anyone wanna calculate how much mouthwash charlie drank during this?" but i've just finished the video and i don't think i've been this genuinely upset over a game in my life before. as someone who's been through some... rough spots, shall we say, this HURT. it's so fantastically well-made that it feels like a punch in the gut at every turn. absolutely phenomenal game, phenomenal gameplay, i would watch a ten hour playthrough of anything that charlie's willing to post but this somehow tore me in half, stitched me back together, then kicked me to the curb. fantastic, fantastic job
1:18:00 - actually just realised they probably didnt need to go into the vent at all. Im sure if Jimmy had actually explained that Anya locked herself in that Swansea couldve figured out how to get it open himself
Well, considering Swansea very likely knew about what Jimmy did to Anya and was clearly also against keeping Curly alive, he probably would have still refused and sided with Anya.
@@tobiasbayer4866I kinda figured Swansea was sort of “in on it”. Not because he disliked Anya or anything, but because she told him what Jimmy had done and maybe she convinced him to let her do that. Idk, it felt very weird how unwilling to help he was, so it seemed like he had just resigned himself to not letting Diasuke and Jimmy stop her. He was by no means a great guy, but he saw how much pain and fear Anya was going through, and by then there just wasn’t any hope. There was only one cryo pod, and I’m sure he would’ve decided it would be for Diasuke instead of anyone else 💔
When I first played this, I thought Swansae was going to be a horrible person and hated him at first. But watching Charlie play it, knowing how it ends, I keep giggling at his lines. He's such a dad
@@OGCalicant he's a complicated character. he's a pessimistic alcoholic, who's self aware of the bad things he's done in life. he sees daisuke as someone better than him, a ray of sunshine beaming onto his darkness. he only kills him to put him out of his misery. that's what they meant by 'dad', he sees daisuke as a son :)
@@dulid5666it even sounds like Swansea was safeguarding the cryo pod not to save himself but to save Daisuke, giving him that “one small chance to get off this goddamned rock”
First time playing Mouthwashing, you think, "I hope Swansea doesn't hurt anyone with that axe." Second time, you think, "I wish Swansea had hurt someone with that axe."
when anya locks herself in medical i think jimmy automatically assumes that she's gonna try to hurt curly, from his dialogue it's clear he knows anya will do something drastic but he doesn't even comprehend the fact that she might hurt HERSELF instead of curly. i think if they had tried to explain to swansea more then he definitely would've said she was gonna hurt curly instead of worrying about anya, but as u continue anya's wellbeing isn't even something he considers. it's all about curly and jimmy thinks he can be forgiven for his crimes by saving curly, he apologizes to curly, he wants to make things right with curly, even his hallucinations or delusions are centered around curly, barely anything is about anya besides the scene with the baby ultrasound and i think the fact that it's so disturbing can showcase that he only see's the baby and NOT anya, she really doesn't even make the top 10 of his worries, maybe he feels some guilt about getting her pregnant (the hallucinations of the fetus) but it's not shown that he has any guilt for sa-ing anya. he doesn't take responsibility for how he hurt her, or for how he treated any of the others in fact, he genuinely thinks he's been in the right and that's shown in the scene with swansea and him. he doesn't think him hurting anya is a big deal besides how she got pregnant bcs that would affect HIM if they got back, i think some of the polle posters prohibit employee relationships? i couldve misremembered that so if not then u can probably assume that (like a lot of companies) pony express might not allow those relationships either outside of what's shown. also polle even says "why are u still so concerned with HIM" to jimmy and i think that could be his subconscious trying to tell him to take responsibility for his actions towards anya and the rest of the crew long rant and maybe im completely off but thats what i interpreted from my playthru and charlies 😣
Fun fact: you should not use mouthwash. It kills off the beneficial microbiome in your mouth that inhibits the growth of cavity-causing bacteria. If you must use mouthwash for whatever reason, opt for flouride mouthwashes over alcoholic ones. Flouride has a protective effect on your enamel, which can help counteract the damage from this disruption to your mouth flora.
“I don’t think I want to play this character anymore.” Yeaaaaaaaaah….. they make it pretty clear what he did. We all hate Jimbo. Also the way Jimmy talks to Anya the whole time as if he didn’t assault her. As if he didn’t hurt her. As if nothing happened.
funny how from 29:53 to 30:08 you can SEE his room go from extremely dark to literally fully lit up like someone just turned on a light in the room, like he actually just got nuked.
12:03 fun fact: because of how much it sucks to poop in a bag in microgravity, the toilet on the Space Shuttle was considered a critical piece of life support to the point that it malfunctioning would warrant an early end to the mission.
@@bean4276not to mention the possibility of the bag not being sealed properly, as was the case for Apollo 10’s floating turd (I swear I’m not making this up)
I can't help but noticd everytime the person playing the game realizes what Jimmy did and everytime they always say "I don't wanna play this character" or something along the lines of that
The burning curly scene is the most emotional moment I’ve ever experienced in a video game. Just knowing that no matter what Jimmy says, it’s all his imagination, he’s not making this huge realization or finally fessing up for the ungodly awful things he did, no. He didn’t take responsibility. He didn’t fix anything. Everyone is still dead. And that will never change. The first time I encountered this scene, the emotional weight of the music combined with the cinematography made me experience emotions I will likely never feel from a video game ever again, especially right after the earthshattering Swansea speech (I honest to god think about what Swansea said daily) This game is a borderline masterpiece, there is no way around it, it’s the textbook definition.
Bro my favorite part of mouthwashing is the dead pixel conversation that Anya has with Curly. It took me a while to realize it but it's really just her hinting at getting SA'd by Jimmy and trying to reach out and let Curly know that she's pregnant. "Why do you think they have locks on the medical room but not in the sleeping quarters?" "Eight months." "It's always there in the back of my mind." And how Curly just dissmisses her and doesn't go into everything she talks about represents how he deals with it when he does realize. "Safety." "Yeah, just under eight months" "I don't see it." When Anya mentions the dead pixel, he barely spends two seconds looking for it before moving on, then he claims he'll "go bonkers looking for it" but then never really does anything. This directly parallels with how he deals with Anya's SA and Jimmy because all he does is have a gentle talk with Jimmy when he claims he'll "fix everything" but never actually does anything to repremand Jimmy or to help Anya. The writing in this game is SO GOOD oml!!! And I think it was theorized that Anya started sleeping mext to one of the motion activated Polle dolls to wake up in case Jimmy tries to come by again, and thats why with all of the baby crying and stuff we see Polle. In Jimmy's head, Polle represents Anya in a way, in how he objectified her and how she never shows up in any of his hallucinations. Even with the ID card scene, her face is always covered up. And at the end when the Polle is there on top of all the mouthwash bottles and says something along the lines of "why are you still so concerned about *him*". And Curly is a metaphor for how Anya felt when she was SA'd, unable to move or speak ir anything. The whole thing is tied in with Anya and I think it displays sa in a realistic way in how Anya is always being discredited and pushed to the background.
An interesting thing about the "Why are you still so concerned about HIM?" line is that even though it's from Polle, Polle has the same dialogue color as Anya. I think it's symbolically Anya from Jimmy's subconsciousness, confronting him about his actions and his misdirected attempts to fix the situation. Yet he just CANNOT bring himself to face her. Even as he is spiraling into insanity, Jimmy's mind practically erases Anya completely in order to avoid it. To the point where the only traces of her that are left are these hollow depictions of a cartoon horse. God this game is horrifically fascinating, I feel like I could write a whole essay about each character You're also the first person I've seen draw the connection between Curly's fate and what Anya went through/how she felt being trapped on a ship with her abuser
@@OGCalicant this is right after we learn that anya is pregnant from sa, actually :) a rlly good video i js watched that talks more in depth about the game's confusing aspects is "you are missing the point of mouthwashing" by alleydreamer !!! i recommend checking it out :D
@@OGCalicant ”I know you’d never give me the gun to protect myself. So the least I could do… is make sure he never gets it either.” She just revealed Jimmy got her pregnant and HEAVILY implied she doesn’t feel safe around him (especially if he has a gun), and outright confirms that Curly will always prioritize Jimmy over her. This IS the SA part.
i'm not even 20 minutes in and already know this one is gonna be my favourite playthrough. charlie's empathy is so refreshing! i did cackle unreasonably hard at "poner" to my great shame. fantastic work from the slime as usual
I agree! Even in games like Zoochosis and Still Wakes the Deep, he showed more empathy than any other letsplayer I've seen. It's lovely to watch him play games, very immersive
He also sees Daisuke’s ghost at 1:37:42 and thinks it is Curly, too. Btw how do people not get the hibiscus, weights, and GameBoy symbolism? That’s how stressful the game is for players, that it obscures the retention that casual viewers like us have lol.
@@zinxxo7202 the hibiscus is because its the same flowers on daisukes shirt, also the weights and gameboy are just things found by his mattress; there's no real symbolism behind them, theyre just a collection of objects meant to symbolise daisuke (through his interests)
my favorite slow realization of the game after the big one for me was my slow, angry realization that never ONCE does Jimmy feel bad for Anya. never says sorry. never feels remorse for actions against HER. just his friend. Just Curly. just feels regret that his actions have consequences. never that hes committed such a heinous act
Also I shared this symbolism on piterest and i wanna share it here so, SPOILER, the packets you make the cake with are also representative of the people on the Tulpar. There's water which is blue, for Anya, yellow gelatin for Swansea, Pink sweetener for our favorite sugar stealin boy Daisuke, and they all come together to make the cake, which represents Curly for um... reasons. But there's also a green Tonic packet, Jimmy, that is never used. Also also, When Swansea swings the axe into the screen, 58:08 it glitches out and turns pink. A very specific shade of pink...
Is nobody gonna mention he predicted the part that they were not only carrying mouthwash but also that they were going to drink said mouthwash in literally the first 5 minutes?
@@snowyimp333well it’s not like the game Iron Lung had anything to do with polio or 20th century medicine, so it can’t be that outlandish to think a game in a deep space freighter wouldn’t be named for literal mouthwash.
@@alexsiemers7898well yeah but iron lung is a phrase that could easily just be referencing the iron submarine youre in. i dont know how mouthwashing would relate to a spaceship just by reading it
ive watched like 5 different play throughs of this game but i think the way charlie reacted and voice acted all of this was the best. he was serious at all the right times and actually understood the story very well. also the empathy he showed for all the characters was unlike a lot of the other creators ive seen play this gam. he just did it all so perfectly so props to you charlie youre a great content creator
Charlie immediately clocking that they're shipping mouthwash ("Oh, don't tell me we're carrying mouthwash..." 0:51) is an incredible start to the game.
Ain’t no way the game called Mouthwashing has mouthwash in some more, maybe as cargo in the freighter that the game takes place in Like, out of all the details to point out, this is one of the few that isn’t really noteworthy.
Mouthwashing is such a genuinely good game. I'm not gonna spoil anything but it really forces you to think about all the characters actions and how each person perceives them, and the symbolism and forshadowing is amazing and offers great material for discussion. Also whenever there is voice acting (albeit almost never) its done beautifully. Just my thoughts.
I LOVE how Charlie became more invested in the story as it progressed and understood the underlines context quickly. I can 99.9% say this was one of my favourite playthroughs ^^
Something crazy I realized watching this that I didn't think about before is that when Jimmy went to crash the ship there was a meteor nearby. Think about it, in the infinite vastness of space there just so happened to be a space rock that was close enough to be unavoidable during the few minutes Curly let Jimmy be alone in the cockpit. It really makes the whole scenario more tragic than it already was. Like if the meteor was an hour away or even just a few minutes further, Curly might've finally gotten his shit together and taken action or at least managed to maneuver the freighter out of the way
To be fair you get like a message in the fax a while earlier that the ship will be approaching a space with lots of projectiles that could be dangerous. Jimmy could’ve seen it and already be planning stuff.
god every time i watch this game being played i get chills. seeing charlie desperately try to joke to lighten the mood between crying and being terrified makes me almost sadder because of course he’s cracking jokes thats his job, but god its just such a dark game that they don’t even lighten the mood for me
50:29 i had to stop here for a minute. Charlie's commentary and voice had made this game fun to listen to without feeling too heavy, until I heard Curly cry. Like a child trying to hold back their crying so they won't be punished for making noise. I was genuinely tearing up. I was able to get back to it quickly, though, thanks to Charlie being my comfort creator.
This game is true psychological horror, not relying on cheap jumpscares, spooky visuals, and eldritch sci-fi shenanigans, but instead on the very real sense of dread, hopelessness, and descent into madness that comes with this sort of situation. It's so effective because of just how grounded in reality it is. You don't get the comfort of thinking "this could never really happen," even with the sci-fi setting. Truly phenomenal.
I love the bit where the editors fought each other to death 😂😂 Plus slime repeating "please don't be born, please don't get born" over and over is so in character for jimmy....
46:27 Hey Slime, not to get all parasocial, but please don’t feel like you have to produce incredible, ground breaking content for the main channel. Whatever you produce will always be more than enough for us.
Heck yeah. We love the guy and even if it was watching paint dry I would be like YOO ITS THE SLIMY BOY and put it on in the background This is a great example of the "hOly shit, two cakes!!"
This. It's easy to get into a mentality that everything you create has to be better than your last, to the point where people often don't realise they're already achieving that.
At the person who said “he don’t know you man” learn to read, they addressed that in the first 4 words. You need to reflect on yourself if you find issue with audience members caring about the wellbeing of the content creators they watch
very sincerely, this is a phenomenal playthrough. there's such a deep appreciation for the story being told and it's very satisfying to see, as someone who's been enraptured with this game since its release. i haven't thought about it at all in a good few weeks, and getting to re-experience just how sickening and well done the story is through another person's eyes has revived it in my head. incredible job, charlie slimecicle. the way you handle horror makes it thrilling to engage with for people like me who struggle with the content on their own. also the joke at the very end about actually looking for a mouthwashing tutorial and it being "way past my bedtime" made me laugh way harder than i'm willing to admit. it caught me off guard lol
YES YES YES this playthrough gives me the same thrill as when you show a friend a game you like and his reactions are PHENOMENAL i love this video so much. commentary that truly enhances the experience. stimming hard as fuck rn where the stimmers in chat
God yeah, especially his reaction to daisukes death/the events leading up to it, his devastation, and the "You Should be sorry, jimmy" were like oh he's so invested in this amazing so am I!
at 1:00:10, charlie scares the viewers half to death with a terrifying jimmy impression, then continues to break the ice with a ""haha, thats called😎 *roleplaying*"
Curly is also not a good person in this game too. He isn't as bad as Jimmy, but he let Jimmy do what he did. He didn't let Anya protect herself, he didn't do anything beside just talk when he learned of the SA, even from the start he let Jimmy on board when he said he knew he was "struggling on earth". All he did was watch this stuff happen. And this is shown from his state after the crash. He doesn't move, doesn't talk, doesn't do anything. He just watched.
The problem is that Curly is only a "nice" person. The difference between someone who's nice and good and someone who's only nice is that the latter isn't able to confront evil, which is exactly what Curly didn't do by letting Jimmy go free.
I don't think j*mmy was a hardcore criminal back on earth. Since they said the Tulpar is a manned transport vehicle, that means they'll have heavy regulations considering the responsibilities they'll have. At most, I think he may have been a petty criminal who had been doing things like theft. It might be why Curly never saw him as a threat, since he believed he knew him better. He brushes off Anya's concerns because he thinks Jimmy is just a weirdo at first, but learns that he severely underestimated him when Anya tells him about the pregnancy. His one and only mistake was believing Jimmy when he said he'll "Take care of it.", after he confronted him.
he did say anya never got a psych eval, so he probably didnt have any more reason to trust her with the gun than anyone else. besides, all curly could really do was try to keep the peace in some way, since theres really nothing he could do to "stop" curly. there is no justice system when its five people space-truckin, and as far as we know theres no prison or brig cells on the ship. literally all that he could do was try to "talk it out", knowing full well how little it actually would resolve anything
@@topnotchindeed1536 This! I hate how the fault is placed entirely in Curly when really its the fault of how the company sets things up. Like, what are you supposed to do in that Situation? The "best" bet was to act like you didnt know until you arrive and then hand him over. If Charlie doesn't upload a video in a while, we know two things that could've happened. He was poisoned from swallowing the mouthwash, or it's just his regular schedule.
mouthwashing tells a truly harrowing story. The story, and the way the games tells it- forcing you to crash the ship, to point the gun at swansea, to do all these awful things as jimmy. The super surreal visuals that show us exactly how the characters unravel, its all horrifying. video games are a medium for art, and this game absolutely exemplifies that.
Just in case you haven’t figured it out yet, all the hibiscus’s (pink flowers) were representing Daisuke because of his shirt! Plus the figure you mistook for Curly WAS Daisuke, along with the funeral photo and grave. And the fact that Jimmy had a guilt sequence for every character except for Anya, him having one for the unborn fetus and seeing her only as a womb with eyes shows us how despicable he really is. Also just wanna say that your run of this game was the only one that made me cry. The overall empathy and vice was immaculate. Thanks for getting me more into this game Slimecicle 👍
I always forget because of how much of a goofy goopy guy he is that Charlie Slimecicle is actually a legitimately talented voice actor with an extensive background in roleplaying
I think from his face and his visceral, shaken reaction, he accidentally forced himself to drink straight mouthwash about 3 minutes into the recording of a horror game about being forced to drink mouthwash. Peak insanity. (It's not good for you, but it probably wouldn't hurt you too much. Still, I hope he saw the complete irony of what he just did, I still can't believe that actually happened.😅)
There's just so many layers to how horrifying this whole thing is, even beyond the immediately obvious. Even if Curly gets rescued, the remainder of his life is going to be HELL. Not only is there the physical and mental trauma from the events, he's going to live with the fact that he's partially responsible for what happened, and could have prevented it. Side note, it's also horrifying that Anya is asking at the beginning how much longer the trip is going to last, and was told 8 months. Why did it have to be exactly that long...
I lost it when he said "he said he had... a poner" I'm bawling my eyes out also: for whatever reason I though it would be a great idea to start this at 10pm and eat a bowl of cereal while watching this section where the captain is cut
I once skipped forward 10 seconds on accident while watching this video and skipped back and it made the scene the funniest shit ever with the subtle foreshadowing of just Charlie screaming
This game is a masterpiece. A horrible, twisted, disgusting fucking masterpiece. The way I personally interpret it is more focused on the flaws of mankind rather than, say, eldritch horrors. You have to love and hate every character (except jimbooblydoo, him I just hate), you have to sympathize, but at the same time? You have to intricately scrutinize them all for their flaws and strengths and doings. It’s insanity at its finest. Kudos to the creators. Not devs, creators. Whether is was coding what button to click to shoot the gun or (voice) acting as if your skin is being ripped from you body, your face being literally opened, your complete and utter tiredness of the whole fucking world you take your own life with pills, driving yourself to such insanity that you want to fuck a cartoon horse, whatever. This is a sick masterpiece. Well fucking done.
You have no idea how happy it makes me to finally watch someone make a video playing this game and actually understand it. I've watched so many playthroughs where the entire point just completely flies over people's heads (cough cough especially men). Charlie just immerses himself so much you can tell he really understands the gravity of it which I love so much.
i just realized the code to open the axe case is daisuke's birthday. what a morbid fucking piece of foreshadowing that is, jesus.

Yeah I think Polle represents Anya in his head, not a human.. Sexually attracted to.. questioning his sanity.. etc, etc.
@@randomgvyoh god yeah i just realized i kept thinking why we're Things with anya represented this way..
Nah this game actually tests your tolerance for psychopaths named jimmy
Who’s that? I only know Jimmeny cricket. Slim Jim isn’t allowed on any pony express ship any more
i thought his name was jambalaya
His name is spelled Judiciousness I believe
You mean Jimbo?
I know a Jimmy that kinda fits the psychopath description
A few things I noticed that made me love this game even more:
- Daisuke stands next to curly while he makes the cake so he knows the sweetener code which is how he was able to get the packets
- There are hints that Jimmy was a criminal back on earth
The infant crying Charlie hears in the beginning could be a reference to Anya’s unborn child
- During the blood lake hallucinations with all the ladders and emergency signs, this was most likely curly remembering the crash in his injured state, that’s what the bright light was
- Anya doesn’t show up in Jimmy’s hallucinations but polle does and Anya has the same text color as her
- even though we mostly only see Swansea be mean to daisuke you can assume he’s pretty good to the kid outside of what we’re shown based on how Daisuke looks up to him
- curly is a pretty passive character, he actually had the power to stop Jimmy before he became a problem, he could’ve protected Anya after she told him about what Jimmy was.
Adding onto the fifth one, jimmy has "sexual attraction to cartoon horses", which makes it sting a little bit more
Damn. Anya being represented by Polle really just goes to show how much he did not see her as a human being. Fuck man
Crazy how even the better person, Curly, still did something fucked up by deciding to let Jimmy live, even after hearing what Anya said.

It's one of my favorite, legitimate uses of shock value. One of my favorite things about Charlie playing this is that he actually understood a lot of the implications way before many other TH-camrs/streamers did. And that made this so much more enjoyable to watch.

Do you mean that you play as the bad guy or is there some implication other than that because I’m not sure
what are the implications exactly?? maybe i already noticed them but idk
@@neonii9325 Basically what the flashback scenes tell us is that:
- Jimmy raped Anya
- She got pregnant because of it but hid the pregnancy from everyone
- When Curly told the crew that pony express was firing them she realized how bad her situation was
- Anya told Curly what happened to her and hid the gun just in case Jimmy reacted badly to her pregnancy
- She told Jimmy about the baby and he realized he wasn't gonna get away with what he'd done
- He didn't want to Take Responsibility (wink wink) so he intentionally put the ship on course with a meteor to avoid dealing with any repercussions
- Jimmy panicked after he realized what he'd done so when Curly was severely injured from the crash, he blamed him because Curly couldn't speak and expose him
All the scenes after the crash are showing Jimmy's decent into madness and his extreme efforts to try and repress the fact that pretty much everything is his own fault
i love how quickly he forgot his prop-mouthwashing chugging bit once the game really started spiralling
I love so fucking much how he got the implications of things and how he remembered minute details like Anya saying there aren't locks on the sleeping quarters

I think the greatest part of Mouthwashing is that it’s a cautionary tale. There were so many clear moments where it didn’t have to go this wrong, where something should have been done, but every mechanism that should’ve been in place to stop this wasn’t. If there was a lock on the sleeping quarters, if Curly hadn’t taken his side and had stopped him, if Jimmy never was invited onboard- the story didn’t have to end this way

Second time, you think, "I wish Swansea had hurt someone with that axe."
when anya locks herself in medical i think jimmy automatically assumes that she's gonna try to hurt curly, from his dialogue it's clear he knows anya will do something drastic but he doesn't even comprehend the fact that she might hurt HERSELF instead of curly. i think if they had tried to explain to swansea more then he definitely would've said she was gonna hurt curly instead of worrying about anya, but as u continue anya's wellbeing isn't even something he considers. it's all about curly and jimmy thinks he can be forgiven for his crimes by saving curly, he apologizes to curly, he wants to make things right with curly, even his hallucinations or delusions are centered around curly, barely anything is about anya besides the scene with the baby ultrasound and i think the fact that it's so disturbing can showcase that he only see's the baby and NOT anya, she really doesn't even make the top 10 of his worries, maybe he feels some guilt about getting her pregnant (the hallucinations of the fetus) but it's not shown that he has any guilt for sa-ing anya. he doesn't take responsibility for how he hurt her, or for how he treated any of the others in fact, he genuinely thinks he's been in the right and that's shown in the scene with swansea and him. he doesn't think him hurting anya is a big deal besides how she got pregnant bcs that would affect HIM if they got back, i think some of the polle posters prohibit employee relationships? i couldve misremembered that so if not then u can probably assume that (like a lot of companies) pony express might not allow those relationships either outside of what's shown.
also polle even says "why are u still so concerned with HIM" to jimmy and i think that could be his subconscious trying to tell him to take responsibility for his actions towards anya and the rest of the crew

The first time I encountered this scene, the emotional weight of the music combined with the cinematography made me experience emotions I will likely never feel from a video game ever again, especially right after the earthshattering Swansea speech (I honest to god think about what Swansea said daily)
This game is a borderline masterpiece, there is no way around it, it’s the textbook definition.
Bro my favorite part of mouthwashing is the dead pixel conversation that Anya has with Curly. It took me a while to realize it but it's really just her hinting at getting SA'd by Jimmy and trying to reach out and let Curly know that she's pregnant.
"Why do you think they have locks on the medical room but not in the sleeping quarters?"
"Eight months."
"It's always there in the back of my mind."
And how Curly just dissmisses her and doesn't go into everything she talks about represents how he deals with it when he does realize.
"Safety."
"Yeah, just under eight months"
"I don't see it."
When Anya mentions the dead pixel, he barely spends two seconds looking for it before moving on, then he claims he'll "go bonkers looking for it" but then never really does anything.
God this game is horrifically fascinating, I feel like I could write a whole essay about each character
You're also the first person I've seen draw the connection between Curly's fate and what Anya went through/how she felt being trapped on a ship with her abuser

i'm not even 20 minutes in and already know this one is gonna be my favourite playthrough. charlie's empathy is so refreshing! i did cackle unreasonably hard at "poner" to my great shame. fantastic work from the slime as usual

He also sees Daisuke’s ghost at 1:37:42 and thinks it is Curly, too. Btw how do people not get the hibiscus, weights, and GameBoy symbolism? That’s how stressful the game is for players, that it obscures the retention that casual viewers like us have lol.
@@swafty5813 I don't understand the hibiscus weights and gameboy symbolism. Is the gameboy because he's young?
@@zinxxo7202 the hibiscus is because its the same flowers on daisukes shirt, also the weights and gameboy are just things found by his mattress; there's no real symbolism behind them, theyre just a collection of objects meant to symbolise daisuke (through his interests)
my favorite slow realization of the game after the big one for me was my slow, angry realization that never ONCE does Jimmy feel bad for Anya. never says sorry. never feels remorse for actions against HER. just his friend. Just Curly. just feels regret that his actions have consequences. never that hes committed such a heinous act
calling somebody "jimmy" insinuates the friendliness which comes with a nickname. and james mouthwashing is no friend of mine

ive watched like 5 different play throughs of this game but i think the way charlie reacted and voice acted all of this was the best. he was serious at all the right times and actually understood the story very well. also the empathy he showed for all the characters was unlike a lot of the other creators ive seen play this gam. he just did it all so perfectly so props to you charlie youre a great content creator
Charlie immediately clocking that they're shipping mouthwash ("Oh, don't tell me we're carrying mouthwash..." 0:51) is an incredible start to the game.
Ain’t no way the game called Mouthwashing has mouthwash in some more, maybe as cargo in the freighter that the game takes place in
Like, out of all the details to point out, this is one of the few that isn’t really noteworthy.

the way he literally predicted Jimmy's child within the first five minutes without knowing it, I love that for him

Jimmy could’ve seen it and already be planning stuff.
god every time i watch this game being played i get chills. seeing charlie desperately try to joke to lighten the mood between crying and being terrified makes me almost sadder because of course he’s cracking jokes thats his job, but god its just such a dark game that they don’t even lighten the mood for me
Thank you Charlie for playing this properly while being sensitive on the topics. I think this is the best playthrough of mouth washing I have seen
1:01:50 Jimmy after doing a few five minute tasks over 2 months time: wow curly I understand how hard it to be captain now my life is so difficult

the fact that before Charlie even knew that they were gonna get drunk on mouthwash he already was is pure comedy.
I love the bit where the editors fought each other to death 😂😂
Plus slime repeating "please don't be born, please don't get born" over and over is so in character for jimmy....
46:27 Hey Slime, not to get all parasocial, but please don’t feel like you have to produce incredible, ground breaking content for the main channel. Whatever you produce will always be more than enough for us.

God yeah, especially his reaction to daisukes death/the events leading up to it, his devastation, and the "You Should be sorry, jimmy" were like oh he's so invested in this amazing so am I!
1:27:03 and this is why i like slime. because hes silly, but more importantly because he has so much empathy. never seen a more relatable youtuber.
at 1:00:10, charlie scares the viewers half to death with a terrifying jimmy impression, then continues to break the ice with a ""haha, thats called😎 *roleplaying*"

I hate how the fault is placed entirely in Curly when really its the fault of how the company sets things up.
Like, what are you supposed to do in that Situation? Its made pretty clear that each crew member except maybe Daisuke is vital. You confront Jimmy, and then what?
You still need to work together with him. Except now there will be insane tensions. The "best" bet was to act like you didnt know until you arrive and then hand him over. It only didnt work because Anya happened to get pregnant so there was now undeniable proof they couldnt ignore and would alert Jimmy to the fact he couldnt get away with it. So he chose to take everyone else down with him.

mouthwashing tells a truly harrowing story.

I lost it when he said "he said he had... a poner" I'm bawling my eyes out
also: for whatever reason I though it would be a great idea to start this at 10pm and eat a bowl of cereal while watching this section where the captain is cut
I once skipped forward 10 seconds on accident while watching this video and skipped back and it made the scene the funniest shit ever with the subtle foreshadowing of just Charlie screaming
0:15 yeah but I laughed so it's all good
